Fantasia. Soundtrack. Digital Native Dance. Glass voices. Staccato Heaven. Pizzagogo - the sound of New Age. Prince, Sting, Michael Jackson, Enya.
This week we're covering Roland's first all digital synthesizer, their Linear Arithmetic D-50. Eric Persing, creator of Spectrasonics Omnisphere created many of the presets along with Adrian Scott. This synth is so popular it was re-released by Roland in boutique form as the D-05.
This month we'll be covering 5 epic Roland synths from the eighties, the Roland U-20 RS-PCM keyboard, the Roland D-50 Linear Arithmetic or LA synthesizer, the JX-3P Analog synthesizer, the sister synth of the beloved Juno 106, the JD-800, possibly the greatest digital synth of all time, and finally the JP-8000, the most controversial virtual analog synth infamous for introducing the world to the supersaw sound! Every Wednesday at 9 pm est🎹
Please click that WATCH ALL SYNTH VIDEOS link above ⬆️ if you're looking for the best synthesizer for you. I have videos covering all of my favorite vintage synths like the Korg Wavestation, Oberheim Matrix 6, Kawai K1, Korg Prologue, Kawai K3, Korg DW-8000, and Ensoniq SQ-80. Watching that playlist is the best way to help me with that gosh darn algorithm.

The D-50's price is constant for decades. It's usually around 500 Euro or $ in good condition and won't go up or down. So no point in selling it. Instead: There is no other synth that sounds like this. When a D50 is used on a record you, which happens to this day you'll instantly recognize. Not just for the preset but the sound character. You can't sample it, as the S-Partials are synths and with Ring Modulation these sounds are dynamically changing. I personally also love the design, the keybed and the fact that it's solid but light. You can easily bring it to a gig with just one arm holding it.

Agreed with all of that! The D-50 really does have a special and unique sound unlike any other synth of it's era

I got mine for $120 at a pawn shop. It was not making any sound and the screen was scrambled. It needed a new battery, I knew, but they didn't. Is my favorite synth.

Editing is easy to learn. Use the first 4 patch bank buttons to quickly switch between the four parts. Theh are marked. No menu hell. Use the first 4 patch number buttons to mute/unmute any of four parts instantly. Use the joystick combined with the buttons next to it to edit. Love the video.

I got mine on Reverb in December 2022. It was shipped all the way from Vienna (don't drink and Reverb) and took two weeks to get here but it was worth it. It had a hard case that kept it safe for its shipping tour of Poland, Germany and Austria. I got the Hcard-750 for it too. Patch transfers are a little more fidgety than the DX7 but I figured it out. Great sounds!

For me, the big turn off of D-50 is it cannot filter the PCM wave like M1 can, hence it has to rely on synth wave(PWM) to provide the loop body and timber brightenss/darkness. Underneath almost every patch, even one that's meant to be digital or real instruments, there's the PWM partial, which for me simply defeats the purpose of digital synthesis. Only until M1 that a PCM waveform sounds fine in its own right. And because it does not need extra PWM waveform for body, a patch can be made of just 1 or 2 partials instead of 4.

Totally. I wish there was a version of the D-50 without a couple of limitations and it would be unstoppable.

I bought a D550 at an auction or $40AU about $25US. Nobody knew what it was, so nobody else bid on it. I then bought a Roland D50 at a pawn shop for $500AU, about $325US, sold the D550 for $1000AU, and made $450AU profit, while getting my D50 for free. 😊

Great video! Thanks for you invitation! It was funny too) could you tell me, please, can I control the Roland D-05 with the buttons of the Roland VR-09, and how should I connect them to each other? The buttons on the Roland D-05 are small and not very convenient to switch. So I want to control the buttons of my Roland VR-09

Missed the stream, had a work call. On the Mono synth subject, I had an SH-2. One of the best sounding synths. Also has a sub bass. I took it to a high school class I taught on electronic music and the kids loved it. They always asked for it for bass lines. Sold it for a Moog Source cuz had to have a Moog and kind of wish I didn’t. Especially now that they make MIDI kits for the SH-2. It may be the fattest Mono out there.

Every demo I've heard of the SH-2 is incredible! They're just kind of expensive - so I'm hoping one hits the market that I can snag.

I love digital synths and I guess I go against the grain regarding sounds as I love them. While I love a detuned fat anolog saw tooth I also love the bright bells wind sounds and evolving soundscape only digital and especially what Roland can offer like the D-50 and the amazing JD-800.

I think the D-05 sounds strikingly close, the JD-08 sounds different because of the filter but it still feels like the 800 and I'm happy a new generation of synthesists will enjoy the sounds!

Very nostalgic sound for sure! Maybe from growing up with early video games/ media with digital music, but it really captures that and makes it feel familiar or like an old friend. Crazy how this set the foundation for GM but a lot of the GM tones really screwed up what they were based on. GM soundtrack is usually awful!
@VultureCulture

Yeah! There's something about the quality of it that's really unique and completely different than anything else I've heard. It's shocking to me that there's not some VST that sounds like this, aside from Roland Cloud of course.

just bought one D05 yesterday for the sequencer, arpeggio, huge memory, all the extensions cards included etc. Watching your video is very useful to know possibilities of the D05/50/550 family (let’s call it that way 😄) I have a dillema right know : PG 1000 for 600€ or ipad app for 6€. Does the PG 1000 transform the D50 into a « knobs » synth or is there latency, unconvenient factor not to do live sound edit as with many other synth? thank for the videos btw ! 🙏
@VultureCulture
@VultureCulture 6 ай бұрын
I love my PG-1000 but the D-50 (I don't know about the D-05) does not respond to realtime knob tweaks (ie changing filter cutoff only changes on the next note)

The analog Choruses of Roland all are noisy like hell, it belongs to their sound actually. The recreations like from TC or on the Behringer Poly-D even reproduce that too. You probably have something like a noise gate on your 3p? Because I don't know of any Juno or JX where the Stereo Chorus doesn't do this wofty noise. That's not broken.

How would you rate the D-50 against the newer JVs like the 1080 & 2080? Your D-50 videos have got me gasing big time for a D-50 but already have a 2080.
@VultureCulture
@VultureCulture 7 ай бұрын
I've never had the pleasure of playing a 2080 but if it's like the JD-800 I can guess the warmth will be harder to come by and the more sample-based nature of it will take it away from having that classic PWM sound in the D-50. I'd really like to compare them someday.

classic. abslutley nothing had sounds like that before it. a true milestone in synth technology. and those complex envelope stages are gold. still are. the D50 is the first VA. I love the history of Roland, Yamaha and Korg battling it out.

I remember being blown away when I first played one in my local music shop back in 1987. It was nothing like anything I'd heard before but it would be about 10 years before I owned one. Even without the PCM transients, the D50's 'traditional' synth engine sounds amazing.
