Roland Fantom - Scenes + Zones for beginners, and the "Zone Select" button for advanced. This video defines in simple terms what a Scene is and what a Zone is. It also goes into Roland's somewhat unique "Zone Select" button for intermediate and advanced users.

Taking an instrument out of the mix to focus on it is counter intuitive and that’s why I didn’t understand it. Thanks Chuck, that’s really helpful

Just got a fantom 06. Owned a fantom s for 20 years, so this scene/one things seems like a total reinvention of the workflow. Here's hoping it will be a blast to do multitrack recordings on this beast. THanks for explaining!!!

Hi Chuck that demonstration was fantastic,it meant basic beginners could understand in a downtown earth layman’s way,not everybody is a tech wiz. And now they can get on with playing music .Just great.Looking forward to watching more videos by you..I wished there was an easy guide Book for the fantom. Ilove it. Cheers. Lugero👏👏👏👏👍

Thx for explaining that really unique "Zone Select" function. I just got a Fantom-06 and thought that the "Zone" buttons are just meant to select and deselect the zones. But sometimes zones won't be muted when deselected but instead put to solo. I was very confused about that. Your explanation finally put some sense into it and brings out the advantages of that function. I still think it's really counterintuitive, especially on the Fantom-0 with only one row of buttons for both funktions. But at least now I know what I have to adept to.

Chuck, I just got my Fantom back in Feb. Guitar Center had to order one for me. This keyboard is awesome in itself. But slightly confusing. I have written many songs over the years and I am trying to learn and comprehend how to use the sequencer in the different modes. Some other videos I have watched, the guys seem to go too fast and it appears that they are gearing their videos toward those that are on a higher level of playing and comprehension of the keyboard itself. So that makes it more difficult for us on a lower level of the keyboard to grasp and understand what they are telling us to do. I appreciate you breaking this video down for us in a more simplistic way. Everything has to be done in a scene. That scene has to be saved each time any editing it done to save the progress of the work. The zones on the left side are basically a mixer board built into the keyboard. Basically it is a 16 track mixer referred to as zones. Which in essence is 16 zones/tracks. The way you showed and explained each zone and how to change the sounds in each zone makes a lot of sense. Now I'm gonna apply what you showed us and see if I can get set up and get to the sequencer videos to attempt to start working on one of my songs. Thanks for your teaching methods. Us intermediate players/editors can grasp how you present it a lot better. Thank you sir.

I'm telling you ... that is the most clear and common sense explanation of a "scene" ever ... this is a great keyboard ... but goodness it is confusing ... love you common sense approach ... please do more on the Fantom ... I am trying to figure out how to send both "audio and MIDI" to my Daw (Studio One) via USB ... I know it can do it (a Roland product specialists talks about it and says it can) ... BUT no where does it explain how to do so ... if you know this ... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE share a video on it ... the manual says it can transmit both audio and MIDI over the USB port if set to "Vendor" which I have done ... but can't figure out how to actually get it assigned or transmitted .... does that make sense? ... AGAIN ... thank you for such great videos ... GREAT STUFF!!

Best place to get an answer to your question would be at forums.rolandclan.com If you're using Windows, the AUDIO over USB is buggy, if it even works at all... so nothing that you're doing, its a Windows problem.

I sent the Fantom back. It has so much going for it, but I was looking forward to breaking away from using the keyboard for finger drumming. The 16 pads are not velocity sensitive, so they are unusable for drumming. I then discovered that the keys on the extreme ends make a loud, resonating clanging sound, which was especially annoying when playing the drum patches. I started to think that if I was encountering huge usability issues right up front that I would be forever unsatisfied with it. Besides that, the Virtual Pianos are much better than Zencore, but still only OK compared to the PianoTeq VST. On the positive side, the Super Natural string section patches are wonderful, and the synth sounds are outstanding. The controls and touch screen are excellent. The Fantom has a lot that I like, but the issues I experienced were too much to justify the price tag for me.

Very nice tutorial without going around in circles like some others. Now, I have a question: Is there a way to COPY and PASTE a zone? My scenario is this: When i first bought my Fantom, i went on NOT USING VPianos, but using "regular"pianos. Now i am falling in love with the VPianos, but they only go on ZONE 1. Same goes to VToneWheel on ZONE 2. I'd like to copy my ZONEs 1 and 2 and paste them in, lets say, Zones 7 and 8. I need to copy ALL the settings(parameters?): EQ, Key Range... everything. Can it be done? Thanks.

Should probably mention that the Fantom does NOT save tone changes you make within the scene. if you start tweaking filters and envelopes in your zones you have to save your tones as new patches separately or anything you did will be lost.

Chuck: conceptually, as you usually do, you put it in as simple terms and explanations as possible, which is your strong suit, however, if someone were watching this and they haven't seen a lot of the other videos, then, the close ups of the screen are inadequate and they wouldn't really know what they are looking at. So, you need a better zoom-in of the screen to clarify what you are saying.

Sorry to bother you, what is the easiest way to get the metronome going with a piano tone to practice? Given the nice action, my daughter uses the fantom to practice when she can't be on the grand piano, but we don't know how to get a metronome going with a piano tone so that she can turn on the metronome and change the tempo as she practices her scales, exercises, and songs. Thank you.

Not sure if its just my understanding, but if i have the Pads set to switching groups, these override the muting system. Its like they insist on playing whats been set on the Pad, regardless if its turned on or off.

Fantom 6 has 61synth-style keys, Fantom 8 has 88 keys and a nicer keyboard feel oriented for pianists. Other than that, the two models are identical in every way.

All I want to know- the one single thing I so desperately want to know- is how to take one of the scenes already in the unit, manipulate it how I want to, and then SAVE IT to one of the initial, or a blank, scene. Just using it as a template to create my own scene. I can not locate this piece of information ANYWHERE, and I seem to just not be seeing how to do it on the screen. If I sound frustrated- that is because I am.

Hi Chuck, I am looking to upgrade my keyboard to either the Fantom 8 or MP11SE. How would you compare the two actions? Some say they are really close. Also, is the Fantom your personal keyboard? I'm a little concerned that people are saying the piano sounds are not that great on the Fantom 8.

But where do you start with this Fantom? If you want to actually compose a piece of music, wouldn't you start with the metronome setting? Then build a track (piano or something)? Then layer in a bass (or some other kind of fish?!) lol WHO has a video of how to actually use this machine from Step 1 and Step 2 and etc.? ANYONE?!
