I appreciate your work and effort and like your style. What people fail to factor in is that we are playing a synth with 100s of of ways to change sounds. Comparing presets is meaningless, unless they are REALLY bad. Sounds too thin? Turn a knob add some bass.. add chorus.. add (effect) until it suits you. That is what a synth is about. If you want to compare static presets then do it on cheap keyboards with no editing onboard. The same thing happens in the guitar world where people compare amps; both real and modeled. They never turn any knobs, it's just plug in and listen to the presets. Then claim one thing is better than the other. Ease of use and intuitive controls should be the main selling points. I hope new firmware on the Montage allows 'finger painting' editing like on the Fantom. Keep up the good work.
@SoundsAndGear

Thanks for the comment! Many people just want to know what the presets sound like, what are they starting from. They may not want to tweak or change anything and that's fine. Some like to program so they can get whatever sound they want in most situations. I also think each company/board has a character, they don't sound identical and that's down to the philosophy and design style of each company. The first thing many people will compare when choosing instruments like this, are the preset sounds. Plus for me, it's just fun to see how they compare lol.

@@SoundsAndGear I agree but both synths have many examples for flutes and lots of other duplicated instruments. Which sample do you compare, the 1st or 50th? To make it fair you would have to check them all (good luck with that. I still after 19 months have not heard all the presets in my Montage.) But I just enjoy your cool manner of how you explain stuff, so rock on bro.

@@tiomkinnyborg2289 Yeah I hear ya, I just tend not to overthink something like this. No oscopes, waveform comparisons, etc, it really isn't that serious for me. I just play some similar sounds or sounds from the same category and get an idea of the character of each board. That's how I like to compare sounds for myself so that's how I share it. I approach it as if we were sitting together in a shop going through sounds, lets just pull them up and see what it sounds like hahaha.

This is something I try to explain to people about every instrument. The same thing goes for guitars. You have these guys all go out and spend five or $10,000 on an American made Strat made out of a special cherry oak. When I guarantee I can make my $350 Ibanez sound exactly the same. You may have the ability to brag to people that you have an American Strat, but it isn’t going to sound any different than any other guitar in the world when it comes to plugging it in and recording it.If it doesn’t sound like that American Strat, buy yourself the exact same pick ups the Strat has.Still doesn’t sound the same, adjust the EQ until it does. This goes for everyElectronica instrument ever made. The difference you will notice will be in acoustic instruments, because different bills, different styles, different words can make a difference with the sound. But again, in recording it you can use the Q and a fax and everything you need to make it sound exactly like any other instrument in the world. I always felt this way since I was a kid. You can have all the bragging rights in the world, but the simple fact is your instrument that you paid 20 times more for, probably isn’t going to sound any different than somebody Who bought one for pennies on the dollar. When it comes down to it, it’s all about how you play the instrument and generally not the instrument itself.

Fantom’s tones sounded more windy, lush, fuller and natural with breath noise. You can do more justice to when you go higher octaves on Flute Echo tone. Sax and Flutes get even more natural and buttery smooth by turning on Portamento button above the PB /Mod Lever and a couple of tweaks under Tone Edit > Common > Legato Switch = ON Legato Retrigger Interval = 12 or OFF Porta Mode = Legato Porta Type = Rate Porta Start = Pitch HTH

Thanks for watching! Actually...that's kinda the point of the video. Both have their strengths and weaknesses and it comes down to personal taste. I like them both as well! However, in my opinion, a comparison is about comparing two different things...so to me, a comparison of sounds from the same category on two different instruments is "really" a sound comparison. There are no rules to what someone can compare, of course you are free to disagree. Peace.
@BradfordGuy

@@SoundsAndGear I am not entirely in disagreement, but the title does say "comparison of woodwind sounds." That sounds pretty specific and I expected they would be one-on-one; like which is the most realistic or true to the ear? With that being said, I do like the video. I wish there were more, in the line of comparisons of unique sounds offered by each too. Cheers!

I hear ya! I guess I just don't think something has to be the exact same to be compared. I can compare a car to a truck, or an apple to a banana, it's really just showing the similarities and differences of each thing in my mind. When I get asked questions, most of the time it is along the lines of "what do the basses sound like on this compared to that" and not always "what does the amped slap bass sound like on this vs that" lol. I'm not sure where the idea that things have to be the exact same to be compared came from, but I see it often. Cars get compared all of the time, yes they are both cars, maybe even similar, but not the same car. That's my approach, I just try to have fun sharing the way I like to compare things. Thanks for the comment!

@@scottl926 Thanks for getting back with me so quickly Scott! I used to own a 2600XS with all the modules and an 8gig internal HD. I had it for many years but ultimately sold it because I didn't like the action. I have a Yamaha Grande so I'm looking for a keyboard that feels close to that. I have a Montage 8 and love the acoustic instruments and the functionality of the Super Knob. However, I'm not crazy about the action. I'm considering buying a Fantom because of the PHA-50 action, the V-Piano and its many other really powerful features. I own an RD2000 (that I'll sell) so I already know I like how it feels and the V-Piano sounds. I'm wondering why you sold your Fantom and Montage? In the states, the Kurzweil Forte is quite expensive $5000. What MIDI controller are you using? I use Kontakt but am not familiar with the Roland Cloud. I've had two 6 week visits to Australia and loved it. Where are you? I'm grateful for your input! Mitch

@@seeingwithheart Hi Mitch, I ultimately sold both due to COVID, and lack of gigs here in Brisbane QLD. I didn't have to but felt with a good quality audio interface and Roland Cloud (not to mention other VSTs) I get all the sounds from the Fantom, along with extra sounds from Kontakt and synths like Dune 3 for less money. Im using a novation sl mk2 which is a good synth action, but as I'm not a piano player the Forte action is fine for Piano stuff I play. The only thing lacking slightly is the FM which the montage excelled at but the Kurzweil isnt bad for FM just note quite as bright and clear.

No I like Yamaha's saxophone sounds because I have them in Halion 6 but I am looking into also buying a hardware equivalent to Halion 6. I am seriously considering either a black Tyros 4 or a Tyros 5 but when I pointed out that arranger keyboards can be used in midi production and that I have no intention of using the auto accompaniments in a reply someone recommended maybe a Montage or a Fantom would be a better and more cost effective purchase. I prefer these saxophones compared to the Kontakt factory library which I think sound even more fake and low budget. I also think these sort of sounds are still usable on my Roland sound modules like my SC-88 Pro or my U-220, personally if I wanted a Fantom I would buy the module version even though it's an older model. To be honest I have a lot more trust in hardware. I think Halion 6's alto sax is a maybe little smoother in comparison to Montage but Montage and even the lower cost MX series uses the same Tenor sax samples that are in Halion 6. Saxophones are going to sound synthetic no matter what you use but unfortunately as an amateur I don't have a budget to hire session musicians so I have to make the best of what I think is the next best thing. It's cool that the Montage includes the Sweet flute. I personally prefer the acoustic instruments over the synth sounds and think everything except for drums generally sounds more consistent on a workstation or a sound module compared to a lot of VST instruments. Maybe if the black Tyros 4 sells out I might consider either a Montage or even a smaller MX keyboard. In black the Montage/MX looks unobtrusive and very reminiscent to the Yamaha SY series, most of the AWM2 sounds in Montage are similar to Halion 6 plus Montage/MX also has a built in FM synthesizer similar to the DX7 so with Montage you also get a 4 or 6 op FM synth in hardware in addition to mostly high quality AWM sounds. Montage would certainly be a welcome addition to Halion 6. I would definately choose Montage over a Genos.

@@SoundsAndGear Some of Halion 6's sounds were culled from Tyros 1, Tyros 2 and even many of the drum kits in Halion 6 sound like Tyros 3 and 4 drums. Hey Man (!) read what i´m telling you: very great doing - awesome - you have a very good & clear sounding. Please do that with a lot of sounds also other style, synth, basses, guitar, pianos, strings, etc.. I will check your Channel in future. No Problem how you playing - it is going to that notes of Sound - and you make it very well, thanks for that. Also Korg will come out with a new Kronos soon - i think, can be important to do so also with it. Then - can be interessting to compare also with the Kurzweil PC4. If that you´ll have - that means this are the mostly important Workstations. Over that the sample librarys from clavia are also very interesting - ok the nord stage is no Workstation, but a great sounding Key, no ask. I think come out a new nord stage a time passes by... Greetings by Fantom of Silence

The saxophone is the most difficult sample to replicate and if you play it on a piano you're not gonna get the true articulations as if you played it through a wind controller such as an AE 30-Pro if you really wanna take it to the next level play Audio modeling's library where you could take the brass woodwinds and deliver unlimited articulations with the wind controller given you the dynamic buildup every arrangement of yesterday had. keyboards just just don't make it especially when it comes to internal sax sounds.

I like how you appreciate being inspired by the acoustic instruments without being so rigid about sounding exactly like them in every way. People should respect every tool for its own capabilities even when being used to pay homage to other instruments. It’s the same with pro musicians. We have our favorites the way pay respects to but we have our own sound.

Which will explain all the vibrato on the Fantom. Gives the sound more movement. Leaving the Montage sounding stale, whereas the Montage needed some mod wheel action on those wind instruments too. Respect though

Although you're comparing apples and pears, the sounds from Roland are more appealing to my ears. For the Montage, the blue blinking thing is irritating a lot... it's not a rhythm pattern, or voice controlled... looks like a big software error. Besides that, Yamaha is already 20 years a sample player, nothing more. Besides this, possibilities to create your own music with a DAW like Logic-X is only possible on the Roland. Therefore, my choice is easy. Roland wins. Next time find sound which are more alike.
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 4 жыл бұрын
They are both keyboard synths, pretty similar in my opinion, and 2 out of the 3 that have been compared for decades. The blue light didn't bother me hahaha, but I get it! As far as making music with a DAW, any piece of hardware can be used with a DAW, just the level of software integration is different. Roland chose Logic, Yamaha of course works with Cubase. Neither of which matter to me as I'm not a big DAW guy. I think both of these can be useful and really depends on what you aim to do. Thanks for watching!
