Damn bro, this was an eye opener, the Montage wiped the floor with the Fantom on this comparison. I can’t wait to see the other comments on this review. Opinion only, but I’m starting to suspect the converters in this new generation of the Fantom might not be up to par with the competition. Either that or they need to tweak they’re patches. I’m really having second thoughts about this new Fantom, as usual great video. I think this particular video is exceptional just because of the difference in the sounds presented, wow. I may have to pass on purchasing the new Fantom.

Thanks for watching bro! I’m sure some will complain about the video but you know I try to keep it as simple as possible. Let’s just play some sounds and see what happens. My general thought has been the same. The Montage sounds are my preference but the Fantom is better as a workstation. For me it is more about the sounds in my workflow. Of course that is personal preference as some will prefer Fantom sounds instead. Also, I have an xv3080 still so I can get that Roland vibe lol.

To tell you the truth, I don't think the acoustic guitar sounds on either keyboard sounded great. Some of it might have been the phrasing and chords structures you were using, but to me, they all sounded kind of like modified harpsichords with effects....I was waiting for King Arthur to spring out from the side of the screen! To me, the lone acoustic guitar sound on my Nord Electro 4HP (which I hardly ever use) sounds better. And generally, keyboard distorted guitar sounds are worse. It's sad that after the decades of development in these companies and advances in sampling, they still can't nail the nuances of the tone, attack, vibration, overtones, etc. But after saying all that, great video and thanks for the info.

Again brother are always appreciated and thank you for the advice on the Roland Fantom as compared to the Jupiter Xm. My main question is how do you feel having both the montage and the Fantom ? Do you feel they have enough sonically/separately to have both ? I have the Fantom and love it but so tempted to grab the montage
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 4 жыл бұрын
Both were only here for a while on loan so I could check them out. I think, overall I prefer the sounds on the Montage, as I tend to go for more natural/acoustic sounds from these boards. I'd mostly pull out dedicated synths for synth stuff. Plus, I have an old Roland XV3080 and can still get some of that Roland vibe when I want. If I could have both I would! If I HAD to pick one, strictly for sounds, I'd probably still go Montage.

The Roland Fantom guitars sound just like those on an FA-06. Save a bunch a money and buy an FA-06 if you find the Fantom guitars acceptable. The sounds of the Yamaha Montage blows the Fantom away in this comparison.
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 4 жыл бұрын
I think quite a bit of the sounds remind me of the FA series, I had an FA-08 for a while but returned it because I didn't quite dig the keybed. But Roland sounds are Roland sounds, some love em, some hate em. I have an XV3080 still, so, I'd probably choose the Montage if I had to pick one.

For the synth its price, the Fantom should've received the FULL range of SuperNATURAL sounds, including the SN Guitar (which I reckon is only available on the Integra 7 and the Jupiter 80)... now THAT would've given the Montage a great competition.

It all depends on how they are played: if you have a keyboard approach all guitars, even the most beautiful, will be fake. To play guitars on a keyboard you have to think of the keyboard as a guitar. And then a minimum of programming on ADSR, dynamics and effects does not hurt

Which keybed do you prefer? I am in the market for one of these, I have played the Montage 6 and it’s by far the best keybed I have ever layed hands on, though slightly narrow. How does the fantom compare? It looks like it has the same vertical travel at the top, which is important to me.

I have a Roland FA 06 ...and a Midi Guitar, i can't play Keyboard, but the Composing abillies are great with such a Keyboard! But i worte "Metal" Music...i want hear "Distortion" Guitars....i made good Distortion Guitar Patches on the FA 06...but when i check the Videos to Keyboards...NO ONE shows "Distortion Guitars" ...and HOW to create one... The Roland Distortion Guitar Patches are Redicoulus totally BAD...tis is NOTHING what you can find on the Keyboard, and that without "Super Natural Sounds" ...only PCM with a Editor abillies that you fall into a Horror Show! But when you go inside...it will works to create a "Metal Guitar" and it Sounds good...true! But NOT Real! On the Roland the Classic Guitar Patches are "Super Nutral" they Sound really good and Real, in my Opinion, the Pitch Bendings on Yamaha are totally Keyboard like, not real in Sound. I don't like them! For me the Roland is the Winner!! On the Fantom are "Super Nutral Distortion Guitars" ...or like it is in the FA, only PCM?? Please Tell me...!

Man... the $3,000 price point on both boards makes it a really tough choice. They're both expensive in their own right. And it's hard to find VSTs/Soft Instruments that compare to the quality of Yamaha and the dynamics they bring without having to use a 3rd party emulator like Kontakt and Maschine...

SoundsAndGear I should be more specific. The new fantom sounds that attempt to be recreations of “real” instruments in comparison to the Yamaha motif sound engine IMO are lacking. The brass and synth sounds on the Roland again IMO are up to par. The action, the controllers (both the sliders and pitch bend wheel and levers) are cool. And the integration with main stage is also cool. It seems like they designed a great controller but forgot to substantially upgrade the sound engine. I know they claim it has the V piano engine and the zen core processor but the sonic results do not surpass prior models and., like many have said, the Yamaha sound set for playing covers and having access to quality “bread and butter” sounds is hard to beat. That’s unless you get into VST’s which is a whole different conversation. Peace.
