That synth is stellar. I’m a fan of you’re playing sir! You have a lot of talent and make the instruments sound superb.

Great Video. Should point out (as if I need to) this synth can sound way better than just these presets and standard types of sounds. It's a sound design workhorse and can sound as analog, or digital as you like, and everything in between. It's definitely sounds better the more you work with it. And btw it looks less cheap in reality, quite impressive in fact, try turning the LEDS to "All off" which only leaves the pitch bend/mod wheel and one or two others lit (though you can totally customise which stay lit - for ex the cutoff freq knob) and then you can read the writing better and it looks more classy. Full leds for all controls is only really needed if you are playing live and it's a dark stage, then it's a god-send, you get to know your way around quite fast and can just reach out for the lit control knowing what it is. Best of both worlds.

Well, after all these years, I must say that the JD-XA has grown on me considerably. I mean, in comparison with similarly priced synthesizers, like the Hydrasynth or Matrirch, in comparison with those, not only the JD-XA looks better (I mean Hydrasynth is particularly ugly), bit it can also run circles around them in terms of the features. Sure, the JD-XA could have a 5-octave keyboard and eight analog voices, but then it would cost $3,000 and there os the Jupiter-X that is around there. I think that the JD-XA also makes for a perfect controller to some outboard analog gear like the Korg ARP 2600M, or the Behringer System 55.

Exceptionably bad.
@quarkyzarky8 жыл бұрын
+LemonSlice Nah, the synth itself is awesome, most of the sounds in this video were bad (depending on tastes) because they are presets. Synth does a lot better than this stuff. you need to program it.

6thfloor Now hold on its true I'm still an infant in studying synthesis its more then making two oscillators squeel, The JD-XA lives by sound designing it may not be suitable for beginners or those who want stock sounds but its a beast nonetheless
@whisperdancer Жыл бұрын
@@lemonslice2233 Mine also sounds bad. But it's because of me, not the synth itself. Maybe that's just your case.
Unfortunately only preset browsing here, but i like when he played the patches with drums. It sounds very good like a mix of disco, daft punk, really good Rolandish warm vibe. I have a JD-XA and it is so amazing what else you also can do with it.

Awesome sounds from this synth! It's just a shame the exterior is so plasticky. Looks fabulous but I hate that glossy black plastic Roland puts on everything, and it's all over this thing! Attracts dust and if you wipe it with anything coarser than an eyeglasses microfiber cloth you'll scratch the shit out of it. If you buy this, make sure you have a dust cover on it whenever not playing, and it'll look beautiful and last much longer. Imagine in 15-20 years how hard it will be to find one of these with no scratches.
@quarkyzarky8 жыл бұрын
+F0nkyNinja You can get some great new surface from synth grafix for JD-Xa (same finish as modern moog and DSI) fixes all that, but JD-Xa still looks great when clean, even if glossy. It's hard to keep it clean but it's very unique and special looking. And for those that don't know, it looks 10 x better looking in reality.

an absolute beauty this synth: I love her, even with the shiny surface. There is a way to avoid fingerprints: wash your hands before playing it, you also take a shower before making sweett luuuvv, or dont you?

Great demo! Could you demo the Roland System-8 please?
How does this thing compare to the montage. I mean attach a nice stage piano to this like an RD 800... I think then it would be a fair fight and a similar price. Looking to buy but can't decide

You make every synth sound beautiful. Since it's part digital it's a shame they didn't add more creative waveforms, wave shaping, wavetable etc. What I'm most interested in is about the sequencer. Very few synths offer a 8 track sequencing capabilities and knob per function control. Can you route the digital oscillators through the analog filter and amps?
@emilshere8 жыл бұрын
***CAN you route the 100% wet digital effects thru the main output while routing the analog signal through the analog output??? If not, then aren't you loosing the whole idea of a pure analog signal????
@emilshere8 жыл бұрын
+John Smith im not one of those analog only people...and I certainly have no problem with digital emulations of analog synths... let alone hearing the ad/da difference???? Never! I was just curious about how flexible the output routing is. im not sure yet whether this synth is nice or a waste of time

This or the new Jupiter X? Any help is appreciated
@MakeMagic4 жыл бұрын
If you can only get one - I'd say get the Jupiter X hands down. I have both. The JPX is essentially a System 8 AND the Digital half of the JDXA, all built into a FAR superior piece of hardware design. Jupiter X has almost every (if not every?) single digital wave and effect the JDXA has, built in. JPX can do even more digital partials at once and it's VA section can do a decent job of emulating the sound of the JDs Analog voices. The Analog voices on the JD do sound *slightly* nicer... but those differences dissappear when in a mix.

Good demo as always Ujiie. But these presets sounds really weird to me. I wonder who or what Roland had in mind when they designed it. This thing will not make it onto my short list. I think Roland did much better with the V-Synth GT. It's still an awesome synth.
@bmxcanada8 жыл бұрын
+Jan Surlykke Schack I agree as an owner. Both the presets and the downloads have been weak. But the sounds you will make are unlike any other of my synths. It is a sound-designer's dream, or nightmare (I made one mono sound with 20 different oscs and 8 separate filters).

This is nice. All those lights make think of something psychedelic, vodka bar, EDM... I'd so much prefer JD-800 in brand new condition. JD-800 was far more magical than this.

+bitleyTM I saw both. There's not even a comparison. JD-800 looks so much better than this.
@bitley8 жыл бұрын
Ah. Looks. Ok, that may be right. I love the JD-800 design. But we live a new age now? ;-)
@dvamateur8 жыл бұрын
+bitleyTM Well, JD-800 was not a good seller. At $2,899 back in 1991, it was no surprise. But the wow factor of the JD-800 was undeniable. I don't really care personally whether a square or sawtooth wave is sampled, generated in software, or analog, they all sound good to me. So, in the end, it comes down to the instrument looks, build quality, keyboard feel, panel switchgear feel, etc. Granted, a JD-800 has a tendency to fall apart, the sliders and key contacts go very quickly on the JD-800. But I think the design was fantastic. My sweet spot for synthesizer design is between 1987-1991. I am still enjoying instruments like the D-50, DX7II, SY77, etc. They look good, feel good, and sound fantastic. What's not to like? I went with the fad once, bought Voyager OS. It sounded good, but I didn't find it playable, and the design didn't grow on me. Sold it after couple of years. No regrets. So, I am careful now with new products. I am quite satisfied with Integra-7, but that's mostly because it has all the XV-88 sounds in it, and then some. I am thinking of getting another Integra-7 before they disappear. It's not perfect, the LCD screen is far poorer quality than SY77, and the alpha dial looks quite ugly. But other than that it's very good. I very much like the sound capabilities of the JD-XA, but the overall design I am not sure about. I hope Roland continues with the JD series and gives us something similar, with but 5 or 6-octave keyboard, and more subdued front panel. Then it would be far more exciting to me personally.
