I have the JD-XA and one thing I wish Roland did was put the drum sequencer that the JD-Xi has it it. I understand the XA is meant for sound design but they both utilize the same supernatural engine so wth Roland. Man this audio you created sounds top notch!

By keeping one finger pressed on the shift button when you are playing a pattern on the keys with the other hand it enables single key changes. Also you can change the length of the bars when you go into the set up menu

You have to use different patterns and you call them through favorites. Lots of tutorials available.
