Sounds pretty good. I think it does a good job of capturing the essence of the Jupiter 8. (Used to have an actual Jupiter-8).

Great man! Yeah, it's pretty straight forward once you dig in. A few things you need to reference the manual for but a lot is on the panel which is great.

Hey Mike I got to try out both the new Behringer Deepmind and the Roland System 8 at the same time in GC , and I was much more taken with sound of the Roland. I'm the type that doesn't have a purist preference for analog by default ; and to my ears the Roland sounded better. seeing you have one kinda made that more clear as I really rate your gear choices and your playing

@Django Fett The Deepmind 12 has been around long enough to test your assertion, and based on the comments I have read, it appears that the Deepmind 12 is an exception to the generalization you've made. Having said that, IMHO, the keybed could be nicer, so some people may want to get the desktop version (Deepmind 12D) & use a top quality keyboard controller or another synth with better keys to control it.

Ron Edwards take a look at Starsky Carr’s video on how to make similar sounds between a Juno-106 and a DeepMind 12. It’s nothing like in this video above where patches sure remind you of Jupiter-8 but don’t really sound quality. The DeepMind 12 is analog and can sound just like the 106. I think Behringer is killing it. All their remakes of old vintage gear sound exactly the same as the originals. Except for the DeepMinds that is, bc they are not supposed to clone any specific Juno model precisely. It took me 5 mins to deciding to buy a Behringer Model D after hearing it side to side with a Minimoog. It’s a 1:1 clone of it. Whereas in this video I sure hear the likeness, but already the DX7 could emulate analog sounds really good, but then it was on its own cold, pitch perfect, digital terms which is awesome.

I'm torn between getting one of these or a Novation Summit, which is an extra $500. This synth comes with plug-outs for three additional synths in the Roland line-up, but doesn't seem to have the extra bells and whistles the Summit comes with. Either way, it would be a good way to spend about $2k -- and either one would be nice to have.

They're both great, but entirely different sounding synths. Best to play both and see which vibe you prefer.

what do you think about this compared to the integra and jupiter 80 (reboot) engine? I have the integra and it's JP8 strings are a real workhorse for studio work but I want hands on control. I don't use the acoustic sounds at all, just strings and pads....so,this might be good but all of the demos I here I think it's not as warm and full as the integra strings, hard to tell......

So the Roland cloud plugin is just being controlled by this keyboard or it is loaded into the system 8 and can be used without a computer?

If you just want the Jupiter-8, Juno-106, and JX-3P, those are all built-in and don't require a computer or Roland Cloud. You only need a computer if you want to swap those out for some of the other plugouts (in which case you'll need to either buy some plugouts or use Roland Cloud).

Befriends Radio I never heard them side by side. But I guess too. I use the jp08 vst a lot but it’s too perfect, like this. The jp08 is drifting all, over the place and that’s it’s unique charm. And even adding a slop, doesn’t really model it the same, I think. And this here, really misses the lowend

Most of us aren't spending 12k on the original with no midi so are quite happy to get 90% there or at least be inspired by 80s classic synth sounds enough to make music which is the end game. If Roland put a cut down Jupiter out in the 80s that sounded the same as this it would have sold in droves and no one would have moaned about it not being analog if they didn't mention it.

I've owned two Jupiter 8's, and I've gotta say, they don't have it yet. It sounds too "digitized." Hard to explain, but you know it when you hear it.

Der Mensch But if they would build a really new analog jupiter 8 like moog did with the model D it would cost about the same as a minimoog model D and probably more. We are looking at 4000 to 5000 dollars then. People would then say they liked the old Jupiter 8 better. It's never really good enough, but for me if i can own a keyboard that sounds this close to a Jupiter 8 for this money just buy it if you like the sound. Not spending 8000 dollars for an old jupiter 8 that can break down and has no spare parts from Roland. Besides the real sound from the system 8 can't be reproduced with the speakers from my tablet or smartphone here on youtube. KZbin is also digitized sound.

I partly agree with what you are saying. I think what's frustrated most former Jupiter owners or users (including me) are all the "imitation" Jupiter products Roland has released, which are often Jupiter in name only. If Roland took a path similar to what Dave Smith has taken, and released a full analog Jupiter that's as close to the old sound they can get, but with modern features (velocity/AT keyboard, MIDI/USB, onboard FX maybe), they could probably sell a heap of them at $3k, the same way Dave has. Yes, there will be purists who would say it's not quite the same, and a Prophet-6 isn't exactly like a Prophet-5, no, but it's darned close, and very appealing. Roland doesn't even consider trying that, instead, just recycling the Jupiter name, which comes off as one big tease to many of us who have been around a while.

Der Mensch I only had one Jupiter 8 (and the MD/8 midi interface for it) It along with my DX7 is how I earned my living in the 80's, so I know the Jupiter 8 sound intimately. I'd tend to agree with you here. I deeply regret selling my Jupiter 8 back then, haven't found anything that quite nails it, and no way can afford what they sell for now days.

"The System 8 is a powerful virtual analogue synth with numerous shortcomings... but it sounds fab. There will be those who will appreciate it for how it sounds, and those who cry out in anguish, “but it isn’t analogue and it hurts my ears”. Those in the first group are going to like it very much. Those in the second need help." - sound on sound
