for all those who hate the sound, this is how a grand piano sounds when you listen from inside the instrument. You can already notice the hammer noise. Since roland's has multiple speakers in their piano, they use it in some sort of way to make it sound realistic. it kind of gets rid of the hammer noises. If the hammer noises are still too loud, you can always adjust it in the piano designer app.

yes, roland's high end pianos use modeling technology, use computers to simulate what would happen in a piano chamber, vibration, hammer sound or so. And you can adjust the hammer size, or soften or harden the hammer(in the first modeling piano called V-PIANO, I do not know if this one still has this function) , because it is all about modeling, it is all about physics. Pretty amazing huh, these years digital pianos are really catching up

Just ordered mine :) can't wait!! Bluetooth is the amazing part. Connect ur iPad to learn/move through scores, stream music through its amazing 8 speaker projection system from your phone, play the piano silently to not bother others with headphones, a limitless polyphony and decay, not to mention the advantages for teaching children to play. This thing will not only become a piano to learn and grow with but it'll be the new centerpiece of my living room. With 10 year warranty and never needs servicing/maintenance. It's the perfect solution for me :) And... Whenever I'm sick of playing it I can use it as an amazing sound system. No matter what anyone says an acoustic piano will never give you the motivation to play it as much as this one does. So it's a choice of an acoustic piano which will eventually become a future space filler or a digital piano that has more than just one function and remains purposeful and functional.

Damn, this sounded like a real Grand Piano, you can hear the hammers striking the strings and producing a rich sound with vibrations. I never got to hear this kind of simulation on my Yamaha Digital piano, probably because they (and Kawai also) use conventional 'Pure CF' (or simple EX) sampling, meaning that they directly record the strings being hit by the hammers on their grand pianos. This way, echoes can also end up being recorded, thus the sound either end up either muddy, round, distorted or too bright. Roland does not have it's own acoustic grand pianos or upright pianos, that's why they probably created this SuperNATURAL modelling technology to completely and accurately recreate an acoustic grand piano or upright pianos, thus giving a completely realistic feel of the instruments. Time for Yamaha and Kawai to also start using (or creating something similar to) Roland's SuperNATURAL modelling technology to sample or recreate their CF or EX samples, so that we can also get the feel of really playing a Yamaha CF series grand or a SK-EX grand, as if we were really playing them in real life! I hope this helps!

I decided to sell my heavy console piano and happened to inquire at a large piano dealer in my city about their pianos to see what mine would be worth. I happen to try the Roland digital LX705 and was BLOWN AWAY. I immediately bought it and am looking forward to a realistic sounding piano with a smaller footprint and a lot lighter weight. A few comments regarding discussions on this "blog" between what's best between digital and acoustic pianos. There are many factors involved, it's not strictly a "black or white" issue. For instance, I am desiring one of the best acoustic pianos in the world: The Steinway D-274 (Hamburg, Germany) 9 foot concert grand piano that has been played by most renown concert pianists today and throughout past years. However, its cost new is close to US$200,000. Therefore, in the interim I am seeking the best digital piano that comes closest to replicating my aim in a Steinway concert grand; in piano key action and most importantly, in the quality of sound to resemble the Steinway. Additionally, I would like to take advantage of the hundreds of orchestral and midi sounds and effects available on the Yamaha and Roland, not as much found on the Casio and Kawai. So I'm looking at the Roland LX17, the Yamaha CLP-685, and others, including the RD2000. I play classical, jazz, and other styles, so I would like the option to create "tracks" with orchestral/synthesized sounds and rhythms, and effects, as well as the option to perform live. Regarding the Roland RD2000, it is only 48 lbs. in weight compared to the Roland LX17 which is 185+ lbs in weight. The RD2000 is portable and can offer that advantage, as well as having 1100+ sounds compared to 300+ in the LX17. All of these factors have to be considered. Top-of-the-line digital pianos have been shown to be able to execute ANY classical (or other genre) difficulty, like fast trills; Roland HP603, HP605, LX7, LX17, RD2000, Yamaha CLP 600's especially their top-of-the-line CLP-685, and others. They have excellent piano key mechanical action. Additionally, as one gentleman pointed out, it is NOT just classical music that demands a fantastic quality piano sound and piano key action. For instance, most superb jazz pianists have a classical background and play on either the Steinway or Yamaha acoustic concert grand (the latter usually because they are endorsing that brand piano). Examples include Keith Jarrett on Steinway, Chick Corea endorsing the Yamaha. Herbie Hancock is under endorsement by the Fazioli piano. These musicians endorse electronic equipment and acoustic pianos; anything that lends expression to their craft. The retail cost of a Roland RD2000 at US$2,500 compared to the LX17 at US$7,000 can be a huge consideration, unless one is wealthy or receives a substantial discount. I have learned that in considering ANY important issue in life, there are usually MANY points of view to consider and evaluate. We can express our views and hopefully respect others who may differ from ours. It's not always easy, but in today's world where "conflict" is intentionally stirred up by the media and destructive powers that be, exercising a tactic, "divide and conquer" by creating strife, we all would do well not to be "triggered" by that negativity. Instead, we can aim for harmony with others. I think that's the beauty of music, to bring harmony to the world.
@skylxntrn6 жыл бұрын
DivineNewAge agreed with the final comments about not getting triggered, but there's just something extremely irritating about snobs acting snobbish about pianos. Anyhow, very well said. 👏

I still connect an old mac book pro with Kontakt+Galaxy Vintage D to my old clavinova. The sound is so much better, it can't be compared. And yet they can't embed that technology to these expensive products. (It's just an SSD drive and a mediocre CPU.) I wish Roland used only the resonance in the modeling and left the main sound to big samples on SSD. I'll buy that digital piano.

Yeah, I just realized now it sounds pretty much like the FP-90 and RD-2000's V-pianos. Good but not too realistic. Better for jazz rather than classical. I prefer the Concert Grand sound from the RD-800 (which is actually sampled from V piano grand)

Robert Lee- Yep gotta agree about that BUT. I think Casio GP works best in that regard with it's Bechstein sound. Really good middle sound in my opinion. If Roland thinks this is such a ground-breaking piano sound, why not have a piano shoot-out, and allow others to play the MIDI file and compare to the tone of Roland. It couldn't be that hard to get Miyuji to give consent to his performance, the musical content is definitely not under copyright at this point...

Yes, but the virtual pianos take up a ton of space on a hard drive. Roland going with full modeling is unique because competitors aren't with their onboard sound engines. That's significant.

How do I record this to an midi file to play on my Roland HP508?
Excellent playing! I have heard that listening through KZbin computer is not accurate to the reality of playing the Roland LX17 live. That being said, in this recording the upper register high notes sound way too "tinny" and lacking clarity/strength. Any comments about this from others who may have an LX17?
@KittyGotSued7 жыл бұрын
It's a different thing altogether playing it. The sound is programmed to sound natural when playing it. And it's astonishing. Maybe better then the real thing, for the player! It's very, very dynamic. The sound you hear is the sound they preferred for this song, but it's impossible to judge it from demo's. This version has a LOT of hammer noise, but as with every aspect of the sound it can be adjusted. Not EQ but modelled, it's an impressive beast. Even though the LX17 differs marginally from the LX7, it's 2 extra speakers are worth every penny!
@divinelightinalmightygodfo4127 жыл бұрын
Jelle Waltman and other readers: Thank you for your clarification. Sounds great! Another question for you and/or readers, does anyone know if the Roland RD2000 Digital Stage Piano (portable) can produce the same classical based Steinway D-274 (Hamburg, Germany as compared to the US model) 9 foot concert grand piano sound as the LX17? In other words, can the Roland RD2000 and the Roland LX17 tweak/adjust the concert piano sounds equally and essentially come up with the same result/sound on either model keyboard? The only main difference being that the Roland RD2000 requires external speakers/monitors and the LX17 has a great 8 speaker built-in sound system? I have read that the RD2000 has essentially the same SuperNatural technology and piano key action as the LX17. If the RD2000 is matched/played with great speaker "monitors," does its sound equal the quality of the LX17? I personally have "Mackie HR824 THX" monitors I am considering to match with a RD2000. The advantage would be 1100+ sound possibilities of the Roland RD2000 compared with 300+ on the LX, and more importantly, the portability of the RD2000 which weighs only 48 lbs compared to approx. 185+ lbs for the LX17. Thank you for any enlightened perspective on this question!
@skylxntrn6 жыл бұрын
DivineNewAge yes sir, you cannot go wrong with the RD-2000, you'll only be getting more in terms of adjustability or bells and whistles compared to LX-17. The high price of home pianos like LX-17 is mainly due to the polished cabinet they're housed in, or due to the better speaker systems. Seen from a purely performance or sound perspective, the RD-2000 or even the FP-90 for that matter is exactly the same as LX-17 (PHA-50 action, SuperNATURAL Sound Engine), the difference in price is due to the physical body of the instruments, and that difference is because all three serve different purposes and are aimed at different players with different needs. People that want a piano that would also complement their home as a piece of furniture would go for an LX-17; a student like myself that just wants to practice in his room and doesn't care about anything else other than piano sound and touch would probably go for an FP-90; a gigging professional musician that needs the cacophony of blow-your-mind-away customization and performance based features for arranging and performing much more than just piano music of a stage piano would go for the RD-2000. But in essence, based purely on the piano sound and performance, all three instruments are in a similar class. All three are the flagships of their respective lines. The final decision remains yours, according to your needs and resources. I personally think you'll be very satisfied with an RD-2000, along with the studio monitors. Link up your system to a great computer and you've got yourself an amateur home studio, wherein you can get any sound you want using an excellent VST of your choice. All the best in your decision, happy music making. Good day sir. 🍻

i hope that it sounds live as clear as on video, because the new hp 605 doesn't which should be the same sound engine. actually I've tested the hp605 and it very disappointed me. the sound gets distorted once played more notes. even on headphones.
@michaelr.32618 жыл бұрын
+lifebycaleb Your comments surprise me a lot because, as you clearly say, the fully modeled and completely new superNATURAL sound engine used on this LX-17 is the same as well as the top key action than the sound engine and key action used on the HP605. You might have used a sub-par set of headphones perhaps or something else was wrong when you tested your HP605 simply because, again, theoretically, using a good set of headphones, this excellent concert pianist Miyuji could have played exactly the same piece on even the HP603 and record it on a USB flash drive and he should get the same sound quality than what he got with this video on the LX-17, theoretically speaking. Of course, through the speakers of the HP603 or the speakers of the HP605, you would get an inferior sound if this pianist would record the sound through these inferior speakers instead of recording them through the USB flash drive. By the way, through the headphones of both the HP603 and HP605, the sound quality of this same piece played by this same outstanding pianist Miyuji should create exactly the same sound quality I assume than what we got with this video recording done with the LX-17.
@lifebycaleb8 жыл бұрын
Well, I got two pianos- hp605 and the old one hp506. First I played the new one hp605 and when I played just one note the sound was great, sounded really nice, but as soon as I started playing more notes it became distorted and sounded electrictish. In comparison with the old one, the old sounded better when played more than a few keys, but was over bassed on lower keys. From advertising I was almost decided for the new one. Also the new features sounded great. But As soon as I heard it I changed my mind. It's a pity, because I almost had a new piano finally.I'm disappointed because Roland is still overall best of all digital pianos. I've tried a lot of them. Maybe I should try it more, but you can't just borrow the piano for a while, can you...

I believe that it is necessary to first learn on an acoustic piano if one would hope to ever play as well as this. I do not believe one could get to this level of proficiency solely through a digital piano learning and training experience. Is there one example of someone who did it? I feel that it is less than forthright to hire a classically trained pianist to demo a digital piano in this way shown in this video. Digital modeling in electric guitar amplification, for example, makes my ears bleed. And, I have never sat down to a digital piano that sounded and felt like an acoustic piano. So I understand the disapproval and rejection that others have expressed here. If one is aching for a set of black and whites keys in a box with a cord to plug into a receptacle, why not acquire a Fender Rhodes or a Wurlitzer and have something of both genuine musical and financial value. As stated in a comment below, in ten years one will suffer a 90% depreciation on this and any digital p.s.o. (piano shaped object).
@benjaminsmith22877 жыл бұрын
Acoustic purist need to open their minds that some digital pianos can create music. This isn't a performance instrument, it's a digital piano that's capable of making music. This is nothing like a Rhodes or a Wurlitzer, those have an electric piano sound where this has more of an amplified piano sound. Some acoustic pianos sound absolutely terrible, not all of them sound or feel good. Some people aren't in a position to get an acoustic piano, whether for financial reasons or because it doesn't work in their living quarters. For them, a digital will fit their needs just fine. It's not meant to replace an acoustic in the long run, it's an alternative to an acoustic when one needs it.
@st0rmchild5 жыл бұрын
Nonsense.
@anonymusum9 жыл бұрын
This is ridiculous. Firstly you can clearly hear that the sound is miles away from an original piano. Secondly it will cost nearly as much money as the real thing and in - let´s say - ten years it will be outdated by new technology and worth a tenth of it´s original price. Guys - don´t let them fool you.
@DelaneyStudios9 жыл бұрын
+anonymusum well it is light years from the cheap stuff/sounds of 30 years ago. Duh! they have to advance somehow, Roland is Grand. Just acclaim it, we are in a digital age. Everyone has something digital in their home, refrig, computer, camera, cell phone etc. We did away with the Rotary; however, I do prefer acoustic. I have a Roland 700, it is awesome for those that cant afford a $40,000+ sound. And, its portable.
@anonymusum9 жыл бұрын
+DelaneyStudios Of course it is light years from the first analogue stuff but that doesn´t make it better. And it doesn´t matter at all if we live in a digital world - maybe in some years even our pets will be digital. But it is a fact: If you put a real acoustic piano in the price range of about 15.000 to 20.000 € - it must not be a grand - side by side to a digital wannabe you´ll think: well nice try but in the end a bad try. So for everyone who only plays at home this can´t be a real choice. - On the other hand if you are a prof. musician and you go on a tour or a festival and live in hotels then it is a solution as it is portable, you can practice in your room and you can do it with earphones. - And the last point: In general the action of digital pianos is lousy compared to the "real ones" as the repetition is far too slow. I have a grand and a pretty expensive digital piano and I can assure you that some classical pieces cannot be played on the digital piano. It begins with real fast trills and ends with tone repetitions in works by Liszt. - And as a very last point: Digital wannabes may be quite nice until you can compare it directly to the acoustic originals. May it be flutes, violins, organs and pianos.

+anonymusum I find it way harder to do trills on many DPs relative to acoustic pianos - the guy in the video seems to do plenty of well executed trills on this one though. Not sure if that's because the action on this particular DP is particularly good or if he's just so practiced on it.

If an acoustic piano that costs 3 - 4 times as much (even before you take into account the maintenance costs over 10 years) is the standard that you are measuring this piano against, it says an awful lot about just how far digital pianos have come. Certainly I would take this over any 5000 euro acoustic piano without hesitation. Absolutely no contest. Actually I did. I do not regret my choice. It is amazing. Apart from the fact that this is a wonderful instrument to play, the convenience of being able to play it at any time of night or day without bothering the rest of the household or the neighbours means that I play it much more often (typically at least one hour per day, much more on the weekends) which is more than I ever did with my previous piano, a strident Yamaha upright with no escapement mechanism, weak bass and an inability to stay in tune for more than a fortnight. If money and space were no object, I would definitely opt for a good grand piano but I honestly think that the days of the upright home piano are numbered. " I can assure you that some classical pieces cannot be played on the digital piano" Such as?

+MEDLT First you don´t have any clue about a relationship between a musician and his instrument. It´s impossible to get an emotional relation to a heap of transistors, chips and resistors. But if you got that special relation it is no matter of money if your grand has to be tuned or maintained as it is your musical partner. Besides that it´s good that you are talking about long time periods. Tell me the price of a - let´s say - 15 years old digital piano. In fact it has lost 9/10 of it´s original price whereas a real grand lost about 1/10. If you own an one hundred years old Bechstein for example it still is worth about 5000,- to 10,000 €! But that´s not the end of it. Companies like Roland keep their replacement parts for about 10 years. So if your digital piano gets broken after 15 years there´s a good chance that you can put it to the bulky waste whereas a real grand can be repaired even after 100 years. And thirdly - let´s see it from a physical point of view: Here you got the original, the sound is produced by the strings and amplified by the piano´s body. There you have a digital piano - if it works with samples the quality depends on their recording qualities. But no recording can beat the original sound - right? If it works with VA technology it is a giant computer that is calculating the possible sound of a real grand. That is a typical example of original vs. emulation. - On the other hand it is true that a digital piano can be a pretty good replacement for a miked grand - especially on stage. But only concerning the sound, not the feeling of each keystroke. That´s why good jazz musicians still play real grands on stage. On the other hand I like the flexibility of digital pianos. If you are engaged on a festival (or you are on tour) and you live in a hotel you can put it in your room in order to practice. And you can do so with earphones, so that is a nice substitute. And that´s what it is in general: a substitute.

Why should someone ever buy such an expensive electronic piano where its going to die in a few years when the electrolytic caps are dryed out instead of buying a REAL THING which lasts a lifetime ???
@Dadee39 жыл бұрын
Electronic keyboardist actually lasts many MANY years. There's electronic keyboards out now that came out 20+ years ago.

Axel Werner Because people don't have enough money to buy the real thing. Even though acoustic piano is the best, but it comes with an expensive price.

Axel Werner Not everyone has the space or the money for a quality acoustic grand piano. And many people have annoyed neghbours (or parents) who dislike listening to hours of practicing scales and intervals. A digital piano allows you to put on headphones and turn off the speakers, or play at very volumes. Also, naturally a digital piano never requires tuning. But, ultimately it IS a digital recreation and so the natural response of an acoustic instrument is missing. They are getting closer and closer though, and eventually none of us will be able to tell the difference. It is only a matter of time.

+Axel Werner Well i would prefer this one over a cheap upright, but I wouldn't get Roland gran piano over an acoustic.

+Axel Werner The REAL THING or Acoustic Grand Piano requires a lot of mechanical maintenance, unless you're just going to display it in your living room and never let anyone to touch it, even dust. And electrolytic caps are much cheaper than a piano wire, and/or having it tuned by an expert piano technician. Not to include that you can turn down the volume of an electronic or Digital Piano (that's what they call it now) during practice.
