she's so perfectly silent. i love it. it's as if she knows that she's so good that she just has to stand there and demonstrate moves that are CLEARLY easy for her. fabulous indeed.

Textbook technique combined with a great ballet body and refined elegance; she truly has it all! It was written in the stars that years later she would be an étoile of Paris Opéra Ballet.

This I have learned in 84 years. Only three things matter in life - classical ballet, the English Suites for harpsichord by J. S. Bach, and chilled California Riesling. I wish someone had told me this when I was 20 - it took me more than half a century to find it out. WAIT! THERE'S A FOURTH - Angel Hair spaghetti with extra virgin olive oil and grated parmesan cheese!

not too much spaghetti and Riesling if you are a classical ballerina !

KAYA AND CAMIILLE. I find your remarks naieve and I would not say that they reflect favorably on your general intelligence or your grasp of ballet. Ballet is about FLESH - human, female flesh. I like it. Ballet is hands-on and sweaty. Et voila.....

@joeinparis Sorry wasn't clear in my statement. Just in general, Americans tend to be more prudish in their approach to teaching ballet. I feel that other companies/countries/cultures have a more liberal approach in teaching techniques, whether it be a stricter regimen or more severe physicality. Not that American teachers won't physically correct a student but that there is a line in that physicality that they won't cross (just a generalization, there are always exceptions).

I have to Immodestly mention that I was co-director for many years of a major classical ballet school in Europe, where our male and female students ranged in age from 7 to 18. Please be informed that it is essential to intimately HANDLE both female and male ballet students, adults and children, boys and girls, in the course of training them. Watch the Russian ballet-training video "So That People Applaud," here on KZbin. If you don't care to be handled (I mean really HANDLED) by male and female dance instructors, better choose another career. PS - The school of which I was co-director was the "Ackerman Ballet Studio" in Helsinki, Finland, where we taught the Russian Vaganova technique. Two of our girls went on to brilliant careers. To which I feel compelled to add this - If you don't have an utterly perfect, near-anorexic figure and if you aren't masochistic, ballet isn't for you - sad but true.

He's just trying to show the proper placement. I guess it's unconventional in America because we are a "lawsuit" nation, but it is very common in ballet schools such as in Russia that the teacher will physically show the student how she/he is to hold the body and will physically correct the body position.

@joeinparis (cont.) as opposed to other schools of different culture where the teacher will cross that line to achieve a desired outcome. I was more responding to the "petit is a perve" comment. Petit could very well just be a perve, or it could be cultural perceptions. Either way, no offense intended. I love ballet in all forms.

It is not necessary to travel to France or Russia to find outstanding ballerinas and dance students. We have splendid young female ballet students in the U.S. of A. Search "Ellison Ballet" on KZbin, then Brittney Feit and Sarah Poss. Brittney's a jewel. I believe she's dancing now with a major company in the md-west, and I think Sarah is studying in Russia.

Classical ballet has heavy sado-masochistic elements. Ballerinas and ballet students are in pain much of the time, right through their training and career. Ballet education obligates the body to do things it isn't intended to do, and it hurts. Watch "So That People Applaud" to the end and I believe you will see what I mean. Note the sobbing little girl. Nor does her teacher let up on her, nor should she.

Apparently, the commenters here don't read newspapers, or can't read at all. Roland Petit is long since dead and Mlle. Letestu hasn't danced in years. She's almost forty. She teaches ballet now.

I'm sorry but i don't see any reason why he needs to be touching her like that...otherwise brilliant

For what reason would anyone define Petit as a "perv?" How could anyone pick that up from the video? Rather don't advertise your ignorance. I'm 83. My partner is 23. Am I a perv?
