I still love my se02. The waveform and range knobs wiggle a little, but that’s because they go down to the lower board for technical reasons, they never felt unstable. I saw some guy showing stepping in some demo, looking closely, he had snap on in his daw, recording stepped automation, embarrassing, turn snap off please. You have to se it for what it is, they crammed in a minimog like, fully analog synth in a pocket format, that sounds really good, with patch memory and full cc control, wich is crazy achievement. They make a lot of fantastic euro rack modules, so they know what they are doing. They added pwm in a later update after this review, and some other features. I add an overdrive pedal sometimes for added warmth. If you don’t like the format, buy a mini Moog or a behringer, if you’re a keyboardist you won’t like this, the knobs are far too small, for my mini studio it’s perfect with the patch memory and cc, try to find that on a minimoog for this price, or at all. Just my 2 cents. Br bobb

It’s fun creating a rhythmic sequence with dynamic parameter changes, then change patches to something related but a little different for sonic variation within a steady pattern. It sounds very futuristic! I like to create interesting cross mod FM or filter mod and adjust the fine tune of the modulator and change the decay and sustain values while bringing up a delay for a few notes to add rhythmic variety, programmed into the sequence for quasi hi hat and shaker noise patterns. It’s got some unique capabilities!

Seems like lately Behringer quality is going up while Roland is going down, not good.
The "knob wobble" on the SE-02 is no worse than the "slider wobble" on every Deepmind 12. There were people who got the DM12 and the first thing they had to do was open it up to connect the keyboard ribbon to the main board. That guy is 0 for 2 on the new DM12D. "Behringer quality is going up" is something yet to be seen, IMO. That particular tree is full of cherries to pick.

Come on Nick. A guy that loves PWM as much as you should know how to do it on that synth. Set Oscillator 1 or 2 to Saw, and Oscillator 3 to Ramp (you called it "inverse saw"), and dial the amount of PWM with by detuning of the Ramp oscillator. Saw + Ramp = Pulse wave, then detuning gets you the modulation, more detune, faster modulation.
@jensmandreasen22307 жыл бұрын
Saw + ramp = PW, yes, but only as long as the oscillators stay in sync and you only modulate the phase - when they are detuned, they'll eventually and inevitably drift to the point of cancellation, which PWM wouldn't (unless you turn the knob "to eleven")
@sonicstate7 жыл бұрын
Sort of , but only limited and fixed depth, I did try it (after reading your comment) and it sounded OK but not quite the real deal.
@tensionvex7 жыл бұрын
You're right. It's definitely not as controllable as it would be if it had a dedicated function for it, but it is real though-zero PWM, which is uncommon, and you still have another oscillator to stack with it. It sounds great with a pulse or saw wave paired with it, and it gives you sounds you wouldn't otherwise have. It's a work around for any synth with a Saw and a Ramp and no dedicated PWM control, so it also works on a Minimoog, and its clones.
@Lukas-wn5cx6 жыл бұрын
Dropping in to say that SE since made an update that adds proper PWM as a per-patch setting and it sounds rad.

It's no wonder people think analog is "better" than VA, because all these OSC waveforms are nowhere near the mathematical exact ones. You get tons of additional overtones with "square waves" like those square/saw wave hybrids this machine generates! I would have to use a waveshaper to get those waves with a VA modeling synth!
@AdamTheAd-vanc3d7 жыл бұрын
pcuimac Yes i know what you mean. I like the waveforms on dreadbox stuff. They have alot of personal character.
@NickHchaos7 жыл бұрын
Strictly speaking about oscillators when comparing analog vs digital by such people usually shows a large degree of ignorance as to how signal path functions. The way the cumulative envelopes, filters, VCAs, etc. (even mixers) all function and sound varies widely in the analog domain and is not necessarily easily reproduced in the digital domain. Likewise, you will never get the sound of high quality transformer tubes via analog compressors etc. through any plugin, no matter the processing power.
@nitendoraku36317 жыл бұрын
LOL. The reason the waveforms look like that, is because there is a high-pass filter either in the synth itself or somewhere between the synth and the oscilloscope. It's most likely in the synth to correct for DC offset, which will help minimise unwanted clipping of the signal. The "LOL" isn't because you're not aware of this though, it's just that analog isn't better, just different, and in any case, we're at the point now where good VA should be practically indistinguishable from real analog. That doesn't mean this is always the case. It doesn't help though that people like to compare apples to oranges. Someone will pick some random softsynth, and go out of their way to tell the world how its sound is thin and crap, and junk compared to their Minimoog, and declare digital/virtual analog/VSTs are a waste of time. Every synth is different though, a Korg Minilogue doesn't sound like a Minimoog, nor does it sound like an Oberheim OB-X. Even with VSTs, something like Massive doesn't sound like Repro-1.
@AdamTheAd-vanc3d7 жыл бұрын
Niten Dōraku . Very true there are many elements to an analogue signal path which will overall shape the waveform before it even reaches the VCA. Or sometimes even the VCF/s .

About transposing the sequencer: The manual says: Press Note+Gate together to enter setup mode. Press 3 to set trigger mode to TRN (Controlled according to the transpose setting. ) Can anyone confirm this working?

I’m torn between this and an MS-20 mini. Quite different but I’m after a tweakable and fat sounding mono and both deliver at that

Nick, you need to make a synth with every feature imaginable... You only need to watch a minute of your videos in order to have an entire panel of switches in your head

First thing I'd do with this unit is black out the top of the knobs and put a big line or arrow on the top indicating the setting. That blink is ridiculously non-ergonomic.
