Agreed, especially considering how ridiculously overpriced vintage gear is these days. I have an SH101 I inherited from a friend who passed away, and while I love it for both the sound and sentimental reasons, it would simply would not be worth the price to buy it today when this much less expensive clone gets it so right (obviously collectors are going to want an original, but for performers I would not hesitate to recommend the MS101 over the SH101. When you buy vintage gear, you're also buying decades of potential wear and tear.

@@theothertonydutch Totally agree. Tolerances in electronic components back then were generally in the 5% range, worse again if you looked at only Capacitors. Theres actually a lot of swing in 5%. @@synthetic24 the original 808 sounds thin and unconvincing. What you hear on records is the result of added compression/limiter to make the kick and snare thicker. I design analog and plugin compressors and eq's, so analyzing synth sounds is new to me. A good comparison and video. I’d happily take a Behringer. I just want good sounds, and not bothered about watching ‘scope traces or a relative sound difference between this and the original
@rars0n4 жыл бұрын
I've heard quite a few comparisons where they do sound slightly different, but I think this is often because many people are simply putting the controls in the same place and comparing the sound, rather than tweaking the controls to match the sound. I think you did a great job of actually matching their sounds. I think for 99.9% of people, they sound "close enough." The other .1% probably does notice subtle differences because they're THAT familiar with the sound. And that's awesome, I personally think in certain cases the SH sounds SLIGHTLY better... but to me it's not worth the 4x price increase, let alone the hassle of dealing with vintage gear issues. Now, I'd personally love to learn how to repair and modify vintage synths, especially because of the broken HS-60 that is leaning against the wall in my spare bedroom, but unfortunately I've never been able to find anyone willingly sharing any information online about vintage synth repair. If I ever learn how to figure it out for myself, you can bet I'll be making videos if possible to help other people learn more. I don't want these things to completely die off because the people who could repair them refused to share the knowledge.

This is a great video - it seems Behringer really did come very close to the SH-101 sound, but... I think the portamento feature (glossed over at the beginning the video) is one of the main things techno producers want, and the MS doesn’t do it right (yet). The lack of an unconditional “always on” glide mode means you can’t spontaneously add some “rubber” to your sequence while it’s playing back. Also, I found the glide knob on the MS-101 goes from “instant” (no glide) to “a bit too slow” - it is obviously a digital control. As it is though, the SH-101 can do much faster portamento than the MS. Hopefully Behringer will resolve these discrepancies in a firmware update! Thanks for the comparison.

Me personally? I'm lucky if I have another 20 years in my life, so the extra $400 I just don't see the appeal. There's tons of issues with chips going bad on older gear across all companies. These replicas/clones/wtf-evers not only allow for an affordable entry for those of us who can't afford to or generally can't justify dumping that kind of money on a piece of vintage gear, nor want to get involved in the immediate upkeep that often comes with said gear. In perfect conditions an SH-101 should last nearly forever. That means never having a single power fluctuation, no gigging, no smoke, rare dust, and only run for as long as it's rated for on the components. How many SH-101's out there have been in such perfect conditions? One? Maybe 2? Pretty much if isn't unopened, it's lifetime is unknown and being 30 years now, it's sitting in it's nursing home. Honestly I prefer my SH-01A over both. Having the mono, unison, 4 voice poly and 4-voice chord modes alone is a big step up from either of these. Just can do a lot more with it.

Excellent comparison. The difference seems negligible to me, but my ears might not be as good as others. There's an entirely different moral conversation of course when it comes scouring the heritage synths of iconic brands and remaking them. But that's another debate entirely...
@wrmusic87365 жыл бұрын
there's nothing wrong with remaking/cloning old synths... Point is - those vintage ones, they aren't being made anymore and each time they break - parts are harder to come by. In the end very few people will have working originals. It is sad but true. And we need companies like Behringer to keep that vintage magic alive.

Ha! I bought my blue SH-101 from a second hand shop from a guy who didn't knew. He sold it to me for 500 DKK = 67 Euros. Not mint, but definitely workable. Used it this morning, screams like hell :-)

I rly like vertical plug in ports. its easier to plug and de-plug, u need less room and can better connect if you have a few synth-tools, u find faster an issue in this part. should be a "new" standard again.

Well, it would appear I definitely can't tell the difference! Set A: MS, SH, SH, SH, MS Set B: MS, MS, SH, MS, SH, MS, SH, SH I've only ever used a real SH-101 once and that was almost 30 years ago, so thinking about it, at that time it was relatively new. A friend had picked it up for cheap - a thrift store bargain. I loved the sound it made, but never managed to find an affordable one of my own. But looks like Behringer have done it again.

I bet other people may have commented but it would of been nice to hear the SH-01a in there too. Even though it’s digital. I realize it’s not the point of the video, but I’m curious how all three match up.
@i_never_asked_for_an_alias2 ай бұрын
5:25 - This is one main reason why the old synth with the "wobbliness" (beating harmonics interference) have more "liveliness" and the newer ones often sound to "sterile" or clean. In a musical context this does matter even more then in a straight comparison. So to speak this often will create those sweetspots where the magic happens.

About the envelope. You showed the maximum release time, but I feel it would be more interesting to compare fast envelopes with the filter, to see if there is any difference in character and 'snappiness' of the sound.
@playlistideale4 жыл бұрын
@MacXpert74 of course, that's the primary strength of the synth! Horrible "oversight" in this and all other behringer vs orig 101 comparisons.

Interesting, but the blind test switched way to fast for me to take notes. I did hear some differences, but they're very subtle.
@YoungPong0045 жыл бұрын
As a noob put to your test, I only could hear that the SH takes longer to "finish" the note... The MS does an awesome job in my opinion! Quit sure if you use it in a song, nor man nor woman would be able to tell you the difference except when not using sync (in a non analog way?)...
@Noammats5 жыл бұрын
And the question is did Behringer do a good job "getting inspired" :p
@CertainlyCaro5 жыл бұрын
The biggest difference isn't really in the sound, it's that the Roland is a longer lasting piece of gear. The MS isn't designed for longevity, or that isn't the intention, but rather it's meant to give beginners the ability to explore a similar, physical device without having to spend around $1000 on an original SH-101. With the best care though, I imagine an MS could last a few years.
@saschaz15 жыл бұрын
oh well the sh also breaks. saw an interview with extrawelt recently. it´s their main synth for live and they always tour with two as one is always broken :)

There are a few moments the differences seem quite obvious to me, such as as the square wave, yet I don't think this will matter once you are jamming on the MS and it is in the mix.
@wadesconstruction70135 жыл бұрын
Owning a lot of Analogue Roland gear, I say kudos to Behringer for what they have done for the price, incredible, and it opens these sounds up to the majority whereas it was elitist when we were kids. Personally I would have paid more for bigger, better quality, knobs n sliders. In a mix I do not think you would pull the difference out at all.
@deepnineforty564610 ай бұрын
Now the ms-1 is 389...... Really hate when gear prices skyrocket.....
@bitegoatie5 жыл бұрын
It's not just the sound. It's the basic reliability. It's the quality of the components. It's the quality of the company, on many levels. If the sound weren't comparable on the very simple design, that would be damning. As it is, once you have been bitten by the quality issue once or twice, the "attractive price" argument starts losing meaning. Especially when there are other companies doing well-made, own-design machines that are actually attractive in price without trading on someone else's work.
@ladyelect92745 жыл бұрын
this is a little baseless...behringer has come a long way from their tiny mixers and their model d felt quite superb, to me.
@bitegoatie5 жыл бұрын
@@ladyelect9274You like one machine so what I said is baseless? I'll take my base any day. People like cheap knock-offs. That was always and still is the business model. I have had their stuff break in the first week and after a couple of years. It breaks, so far as I can tell, because of build quality. The approximations they make are fine - if you can accept using the branding, name recognition, reputation, and design of another, still-active company to sell the stuff. If you can accept that after 40 or 50 years they come up with barely acceptable versions of the simplest classics, without even giving them a new look. A basic sequencer and a patch point or two is pretty weak evolution. If you can accept streams of unhappy former employees and insane lawsuits against customers writing on the internet and competitors who have been wronged as part of the price of the knock-off, fine. I can't. I don't have so much disposable income that I can afford such indulgences to get a piece of hardware from a company like this, with this track record. That's just me. You live with it if you can. What I say is not, however, any kind of baseless.
@gnarlysoundscapes72105 жыл бұрын
My Behringer Neutron appears to be very well made. Steel shaft pots, metal faceplate, no wobbly knobs and the case is rock solid. I even knocked a fan over onto it and was scared I'd killed my favorite synth, but the only damage was a tiny scratch in the paint. I think if you actually spend some hands-on time with a Behrigner synth, you'll be surprised how good the build quality is.
