Hi! I am sure you can do your job with the old spd-sx. That price difference is not little, and maybe you don't need the extra knowledge the pro version offers. Also, in the beginning you will not have those power issues we all have after some years. And you can sell it, and buy the pro version if you feel you really need it. But in 70%-80% of cases there is no need for the Pro.

Have Roland fixed the dreaded power issue many of us have experienced? I'm a bit worried to see that it looks like there's still a flappy rubber power button on this new model.... I have been using the original SPD-SX professionally since it's initial release some years ago. I love it, and cannot do without it because our band has somewhat built our set around it, as the powerful tool that it is. However it must be said, my relationship with the SPD-SX, and sadly Roland as a brand, has been a very much love/hate one. My units have been back to Roland several times over the years due to a persistent issue that leads it to intermittently refuse to turn on, with no apparent reason for it. I think one of my units has actually been back to Roland 4 times now. The first time, they told me they replaced the main board, and this had fixed it. But when the issue soon returned, their techs gave me no further explanation for it whatsoever. Long story short, it became a highly frustrating experience, and ultimately a dead end. To me, it suggests Roland are likely aware of an issue but unwilling to admit to anything, presumably due to the liability that would come with that. Sadly, the best advice Roland customer support could give me in the end, was to purchase a second back up unit to carry around with me. Disappointing to say the least, for a product costing hundreds and marketed to professionals. Is it too much to ask, to expect the unit to reliably turn on? Each time I sent it back, and after a short period during which the problem seems to go away, it soon returns, a few weeks later. In the end, I gave up sending it back to Roland or expecting any further support from them at all. My only option was to carry two of them on the road, which is what I now do. Again, a real disappointment when this is your livelihood. BOTH of my SPD-SX units now have this problem. So far there has not been one single occasion during which both of them refuse to turn on, at the same time. Not yet anyway, thankfully, but I sincerely hope that never happens. For now at least, it seems like they have conspired between them to take turns. For the record, all of my kit is very well cared for, kept warm and dry at all times, and transported in solid flight cases. Having very much given up on Roland, I sent my units off to an independent tech that I know personally. Outcome - No explanation, just lots of head scratching. I even decided to take one of them apart myself, to see if I could work it out. I couldn't see anything obvious. However, the mere act of unscrewing the unit and pulling the two halves apart bizarrely seems to make the problem go away for a little while. It's truly a mystery to me, but that awful flappy rubber power button seems to have something to do with it. That's my best guess, anyway. I know as a matter of fact that it isn't just me experiencing this. I've seen it discussed in forums online, and I also know three or four other professional drummers personally that use the SPD-SX to perform live. Every single one of them has experienced this issue themselves at some point. Getting to a show, and experiencing the horror of it refusing to turn on. You then go through the standard process of elimination (different cables, outlets, power packs etc to rule everything else out), but we all know it's a waste of time, because the ONLY explanation is a power issue inside the unit itself. Without any explanation from Roland proving otherwise, I can only conclude this isn't an issue with just a few SPD-SX units, or something we are doing wrong. We've been in this game a long time, and we are not stupid. The ONLY explanation is an inherent flaw in the design of the SPD-SX itself. Being totally frank, it's just not good enough for a professional level product, used by some of the world's biggest acts. Performers need reliability first and foremost, over and above everything else. I see that Roland are still selling and actively marketing the original unit, seemingly doing their best to keep the issue on the low down. I hope Roland can understand that my first hand experience using the previous model, and my experience obtaining support (or lack thereof) leads me to be extremely cautious purchasing Roland products going forward. Sadly, I don't really trust them to actually admit to problems and do right by their customers, and that's a real shame, because the products are amazing tools and in terms of functionality, pretty much the industry standard. All of this being said, I will absolutely be considering this new PRO model. I can only hope they have quietly fixed the problem behind the scenes, and this isn't going to be an issue with the new unit. However, as I have now spent an absolute fortune trying to get the previous model to work for me RELIABLY, and having had far too many panic moments over the years getting to a show only for the unit to outright refuse to turn on, I will definitely be looking for clarification on the matter first, before I spend any more of my hard earned cash. Should some kind of confirmation on this matter not be possible, then I'll just have to wait patiently for the time being to see if other users experience problems in the coming weeks. So, Roland, if you are reading this, could you confirm that the power delivery inside the unit has been updated in some way, or changed? If so, that would be enough for me. I'd let bygones be bygones, and put one in my basket right away........

Hi. I also had questions with the power on of SPD-SX. II had to plug the device into an electrical outlet and wait 10-15 minutes. only then did the SPD-SX turn on. The problem is in the power supply. Capacitors dry out. A computer repair specialist dismantled the power supply, replaced the capacitors. All OK. Only power supply on plastic ties

Exact same problem happened to me & after many many repair jobs, dead end solutions and wasted money, I had to do the same & replace the whole unit! All while I was a student in music college leading up to a final year performance exams & with gigs heavily dependant on the SPD-SX. I'm praying Roland are not oblivious to this, have addressed this issue and it doesn't happen again with the SPD-SX Pro.

Those EXACT reasons are why I use the Yamaha DTX Multi12. One some shows I use two. Twelve years and never an issue. Now, this new SPD-SX Pro makes me think I need to give Roland another shot... looks great with lots of cool and useful functionality.

Some of us are wondering if there is going to be any king of trade in or trade up situation! I would love to participate if so. I've been wanting SPD SX for about 10 years, after a long mental battle weather i should wait for a new model and kinda wanting to keep my sound acoustic at the same time. I saw no evidence anywhere of a new model being developed so i bought one about a year and a half ago and have not really used it too much(only performed on stage with it twice) i've hardly scratched the surface of what this device(spd sx) can do. But now I want the new one because it has hi hat controller, the first three pads are supposedly more sensitive/more usable(this is a biggg deal if true), more memory, faster kit loading time, more output customization options, twice the trigger inputs(i've almost bought a (TM 2) on a dozen occasions to use along side of of my (spd sx)), and so many more reasons! I am also hesitant to mention the rare occurrence horror stories i find in the comments from the drummers who uses (spd sx) night after night on stage that have to carry two (spd sx)s around because sometimes one won't power on. this terrifies me. I won't carry around two SPD SXs, program them to do the same thing on the off chance that it happens to me but i love this product! i'm just scared of fully integrating this into a performance, becoming dependant on it to work, getting all set up for a show and then your device does not power on although to be fair i have seen people suggest that you need to let the capacitors charge up for 5 or 10 mins if this happens(and i can imagine people plugging in the power supply last, and noticing that it does power on and frantically unplugging and plugging back in, changing power sources and whatever else they can think of just mins before down beat). but i'm not saying the people who have come across this issue are crazy, imagining things, or trying to discredit their experience in any way. That being said, I still love my SPD SX and would love to obtain the SPD SX PRO! I'm not sure when i might pull the trigger, and if ill rid myself of the old model or not(it might be fun to have two programed to do different things) I just hope i don't wait 10 more years to upgrade id be all in right now if i knew i could get at lease $500 for like a trade in situation!

It's unlikely seeing as Roland make you pay to download their software again. I upgraded my laptop to one which doesn't have a CD-ROM drive (like all laptops now) and Roland charged me $40 to download it again!! 2-Box offer theirs for free and it also works a lot better.

Very nice item, but for me It is missing two features to be really Pro... - sync tempo for loops (spd sx) - make loops on the fly (spd 30) I had both old styles and after several years using them on stage I sold them to buy this new one. I'm really disappointed and I wish they will solve this issue with new filmware.

SPD-SX has 2 effect control knobs and 4 quick effect select buttons, this PRO version only one Master FX knob and only one effect on / off button. Why? How do you quickly select the different effects?

of course. Roland is one of the inventors of MIDI ;-) You've been able to do that with all the pad instruments since the beginning in 85. Just switch MIDI PC TRX on.

I bought spd sx pro couple of days ago. Im using SPD sx for several years. However, navigating SPD sx pro seems complex. I couldn't find some important feature yet. Kindly answer or send video link: 1. How to do tempo mach for different loops? 2. How to sync kit tempo for loops? 3. How to do wave edit (star and end) quickly? I called reseller, Roland Canada, checked Roland backstage. Got No answer yet.

I would like to know how this works in conjunction with the SPD-SX. Its unlikely I'd get enough in a sale of my current device to make it worthwhile, so why not use it as a second or backup device, or for other purposes? The other thing that jumps out at me is that Roland is still limiting this. Why in the world would they continue to (probably) use SD cards as internal memory instead of just putting in a small RAM/ROM chip and having an SD card reader? That way one can not only put in whatever memory amount he or she desires, but they can also have pre-made kit sets. I play 2 different venues and while I have similar kits at both, I'd love to be able to separate each and every place I'd use this at. To me, this is a no-brainer. SD cards are cheap.

It is such a shame that Roland are not bolting in their jack inputs/outputs. The 2-Box drum it 3 and drum-it 5 have all of the jacks bolted in and they last forever, whereas the SPD-SX doesn't (and neither does the SPD-SX Pro) so it would degrade in it's sound quality and reliability over time with frequent setting up and packing down. Great products, but I'd rate them higher if they had this simple thing......

On the Pro, loading seems instantaneous and sounds previously playing are not cut off so a loop you had playing from a previous pad will keep going until you turn it off.
