The System-1 doesn’t appear the sort of synth to create big washes of sound. With it’s focus more aligned with classic analog synthesis a limited FX section I was surprised to discover that it can go far deeper than it’s neon “me-too” mono-synth styling suggest. The 4 voice limitation seemed a road block to producing large audio atmospheres, but the 12 waveforms, there’s a wide range of sculpting possibilities to be x-modded, ring-modded and synced. In particular, the vowel waveform can be bent and twisted together with the “super-waves” (Supersaw, Supersquare and Supertriangle). The System-1 has deeper qualities.
From the wails of a dystopian technological future with “Sirens” to the euphoric dreams of “Stratosphere”, there’s an array of useful presets here to immerse yourself into.

Thanks a lot! I hope I you like the System-1. The main issue w pads is the polyphony. I'm sure you know it's only 4... All the pads I did were played with 4 but I had to tweak the sequence to minimise note stealing! Great price for €100!

I only played the SH-101 in the 90's so forgive me as it's a long time! IMHO The 101 plugout is pretty good. I think the resonance is a bit harsh at the extremes but certainly has that rubbery 101 vibe. I've never played a Promars but as a synth, yeah I dig it. It has this crazy ass super fast zappy lfo for SFX etc. The SH-2 is also a highly regarded emu, again I haven't played the original but it is really ballsy and dare I say it - analog sounding! Ah tnx dexterous. It's a sleeper synth IMHO. It can sound hard as nails but also has some real depth & beauty with some reverb/delay. It also has some mod options that the S-8 can't do, but is more limited in other areas.

Thankyou! I really like the System-1. I've been making some sounds on the System-8 recently. They aren't totally interchangeable... If I had to summarise, the System-1 is more aggressive, the System-8 is more "authentic" as a polysynth. Love them both!

It's not paraphonic, it's fully polyphonic. Exact same architecture as System 8, just with half the voices and no support for the polyphonic plug-outs.

The plugout on the System-1 does support the sh101, sh2, promars, and others as plugins using the roland ACB.

I very much like the sounds of the system 1, but the typr of sound I do is more sequence oriented, since I dont play keys in any kind. I know the System 1 lacks a sequencer and I work in a dawless way... do you know some sequencer hardware i can buy or some option I can use? Just because of the sequencer alone I was thinking of buying a Korg Volca Bass (and I know they are complete different types of devices). Now, I loved your sounds! Thanks for the video :)

Hi there. I understand what you’re saying. I personally use an Arturia Keystep if I’m dawless jamming. There’s many other options, like a Roland TB-3 which can be used for external sequencing (depending on what you want). Yeah! Gotta have a dud in there somewhere I suppose;) I mean, who needs a propeller sound?! Sometimes I just stumble on some sounds and like them. Often it's hard to decide which ones get cut. The Microkorg I've never played but I know it's highly regarded.

​@@Soundsauca I love the microkorg, I made a lot of cools sounds with it but sometimes it just takes hours to make a good patch...It requires very precise settings to sound decent and is very tedious to edit. On top of that it's not that good for pads. Have you tried roland Jd-xi ? It seems to produce very good pads effortlessly

Yeah some synths have a wide sweet spot. Others you have to really work for it. JD-Xi like many Roland synths is great for pads. System-1 is a slow burner, many of the more interesting sounds do need fine tweaking.

Glad to hear it! No, I did some fades IIRC to transition between patches but no EQ/compression or external FX.

Hey Pete, no they are my custom presets. It’s a very underrated synth. Slightly more aggressive than the system-8 and with a more flexible modulation section, albeit with 4 note polyphony. For what it does it’s quite unique.

Hi. No there’s no external fx. System-1 has reverb + delay. There’s also a “crusher” effect which does sample rate reduction. The keys are very plasticy and not the best. However the whole synth is solid and well made. The front panel is great to program on.

Hello, I finally bought a second hand System 1 thanks to your video and I'm very pleased with the sound so far. I upgraded the synth to 1.30 and I managed to load new patches from Roland's website via the backup and restore process but I'm looking for a more convenient way to organize and load patches from different banks into my System 1...On forums people were talking about a free Roland System 1 Librarian but it seems to have completely disappeared from Roland website, same for the System 1 plugin trial. I heard of an alternative editor from Purebits but the download link is dead. I'm a bit confused, I don't really want to pay 99$ for the plugin version, is there another way to do this ?

Yes the backup/restore is a really obtuse way to manage patches. The free librarian was IIRC the plugin. Apparently the demo still allowed for patch transfer. Roland have moved all this into the cloud. I still think you could sign up for a trial and use it in demo mode? I'm not sure on that though.

Thank you. The soundset bundle comes with patch formats for loading directly to the synth via USB. Instructions are included. From feedback I've had it can be a bit slow and it's important to wait for the scatter lights to stop blinking;) It also comes with the plugin format patches. These can obviously be loaded in the plugin, but from there you can also transmit or "plug out" these to the hardware if you own both. I'm always around to offer help and support though should you need!

Ive only loaded the arp set so far but im gobsmacked how good these are. I really thought this synth was destined to be a lead/bass synth but these new sounds are amazing and really add life and movement to it. Best £34 ive ever spent and absolutely no way on earth I'd ever be able to program it to make those sounds!!! Great work!!

Hi. The System-1 has 4 voices. Some sounds suffered from voice stealing so it was quite tough to pull it off. I didn’t overdub so each sound was recorded in one pass. I did edit some midi note lengths to reduce the note stealing issue. But to answer, I think most were chords. Hope this helps!

Hello Marcjan, the patches are supplied as both. If you have the plugin you can “plug out” to the hardware synth. If you only have the synth you can connect to a computer via USB and transfer the patches. I include instructions but am always on hand to help if you get stuck! They have to be transferred from a computer first but the plugin isn’t necessary to do this. Once that is done you can play all 64 from the hardware without a computer yes.

Hard to say definitively. Depends what you're after. System-8 is better at emulating the classics. Jd xa has a more exotic and flexible engine + 4 x analog voices.

@@TomFrajer Hi Tom, yes they do but some functions don't quite translate - the arpeggiators (as the 1m doesn't have one) and scatter. So with those sounds there are variations due to this. Hope this helps!
