Awesome video. Easy to follow and you covered everything. I just bought a used TD-4 module with 4 of the matching pads. The only thing I don't get is why Roland skipped the MIDI return. You can't playback any internal sounds from an external recording device such as a PC based DAW. It's strictly for practicing or for using as a trigger. It would've been such an easy feature to add.

Thanks! This was a very thorough walkthrough. I've had my TD-4 for 11 years. Still goin' strong! I bought a TD-9 so I can add more pads by chaining the two modules together via midi in/out. Works great. Your section on Xstick/SideStick (29:57) got me thinking there must be a way to do this in drum software. I'm not sure about EZdrummer, but I found a way in Superior Drummer 3 by adding "Stacked Articulations" to the snare. I simply added "Sidestick" to a "Rimshot" stack, then used "Velocity Gate" to trigger the rimshot when I hit the rim hard enough (More Menu > Stacks / Add To > Rimshot). It's a couple of extra steps, but took me seconds to set up. Worth the hassle, if you want that feature on your eDrums.

I've had my td-4 the first year it was issued and have enjoyed using it very much. As I'm more drummer than tech guy I hadn't paid a lot of attention to the manual. Frankly it baffled me more than helped me so thanks for the clear step by step tutorial about the manual. I've gotten some bad bleed thru on my crash cymbal and have been looking for a solution to get rid of that. Still not sure that I have found the solution so any tips from you would be greatly appreciated. Btw- your tutorials on ez drummer3- working the song creator- great quality but your moves on the mouse are a little too fast for me to follow. Its like you're in 16th tempo and I need whole notes. @@ShootieSchool My crash cymbal will resonate with sound without hitting it. Any time I strike the other pads I will hear a low cymbal sound added to whatever else I am playing. Now that I'm connected to ez drummer with my td-4, that extra cymbal noise sometimes interferes with midi mapping to ez drummer.

Bro, thank you so much taking time to make this guide. I've one question: did you used ezdrummer and instantly had audio feedback or had any problems with latency issues? Do you believe this module is usable with ezdrummer for playing all time or just ezdrummer after recording?
@ShootieSchool
@ShootieSchool 3 жыл бұрын
I have respectable PC specs and a simple Midi to USB converter (old maudio unit). Playing live in a 125 foot midi cable (not USB), the length of a mid-sized venue, I have 4 ms of latency to my DAW. Add a few more for the software to trigger the sounds. The answer is yes to my standards. Understanding workflow/computers is important. If you want to really get into this stuff, check out the forums at vdrums.com. Good luck to you.

For the td4, you need a "Midi to USB" cable or interface. Before buying it make sure it meets you computer spec requirements. They have all-in-one cables, search "midi to usb" on amazon and you'll see. Mapping the td4 is covered @ 39:00 in this video. And you'll have to look at the software you want to trigger (for me it's Toontrack's EZD2) to decide what those aforementioned notes (from my video) should be.

With the Td4, using the crash2 input trick to gather the bell of the ride, can i use the tom2 input as a crash, so i don't have to split crash1 imput? I don't mind 2 zones on crashes as i'm goin' to keep using my mono 'till they last for the moment, and i could keep choking them. Assuming you're using the headphone output from the TD4. And assuming you've check the mixer/panning settings to make sure everything isn't panned in one direction. It sounds like your headphone jack on the TD-4 is broke. 'if' that's is indeed the case, it's probably because someone stepped on the headphone cable while it was plugged in, common accident. If I were you and didn't have a friend that can solder circuit boards and fix it cheap, i would confirm that the main outputs on the back of the unit are not broken. If they work fine. I would acquire a cheap mini-mixing board and plug the main outputs of the TD-4 into this mini-mixer, and monitor your TD-4 with your headphones from there. Just like I do in this video, not that I highlight that fact. Or if you're already have a workflow with a computer/DAW, stop using the TD-4 sounds and just use your kit to trigger software sounds. Hope that helps.

So, in 41:44 the module will send my kit notation (like the change pad sounds you made before) to the vst, am i right? If i change into the module snare to tom, tom to crash, the ProgramChg will tell Vst the right notes, or my snare will still be read as snare instead of a tom? It's like an "import module data" in the vst learn option? Or something else?
@ShootieSchool
@ShootieSchool 3 жыл бұрын
You don't change the sound in the head unit. You change the note that is transmitted when triggering software. Easily done on the TD4.

@@ShootieSchool Yep, but when i change the note into the module, the vst will have it's own notation that must be set to fit my kit notation, that option will import it? Or it's for something else?
@ShootieSchool

@@IllGib Depends on the software. EZD2 demands a specific note from the module. Other software the notes can be anything. All case sensitive. If you have a module that can change outgoing notes, you'll be all set.

A brand new Alesis Nitro Mesh is cheaper than a used Roland TD4 if you're looking for your first kit. A used Roland TD3 will save you a few bux than with a used TD4.

Can you add another cymbal using the line in or line out?
@ShootieSchool
@ShootieSchool 4 жыл бұрын
No this is not an expandable kit. For my setup in the video, I could trade the three zone ride, for (2) two zone cymbals. A poor mans way to expand this kit could be using splitters on your TRS (stereo) cables and exchange a dual zone cymbal for (2) one zone cymbals. I personally combine a TD-4 with a TD-3 using a midi merger to expand my kit. Hope that helps.

@@Melissa05121992 Maybe you are just distorting. With all of your gear, there are many volume knobs, turn them down or try turning the volume of just those drums down in the TD4. Also, in these video programs there are "noise suppression, and automated volume" settings. Try disengaging those if they exist in Google Meet. Good luck. Hard to tell what the issue is from here.

@@bukojoe3821 I use all of the original stock pads that came with the TD-4. So I don't really customize anything. I did add a CY12R ride in which I simply had to tell the TD-4 what pad I was using. I use custom settings for two reasons. One is if I'm using an off-brand pad or a used beat-up pad that does not trigger correctly. Two, if I'm playing Hard-Rock/Metal drums, I will increase the sensitivity settings so my hits are more even and powerful. Otherwise, there is really not much that I personally adjust. for my playing . If you're new, I would look at it in one of two ways. One, use the custom settings to compensate for how 'you' play e-drums. or Two, change your technique of how you play drums to compensate how the TD4 wants you to play. Since this has been my main kit for over 10 years, I think I have adjusted my playing to the default settings. I hope that is sensible and maybe helps you with your question. Feel free to ask something more specific, I may be able to help.
