Recording Drums Explained (Roland TD-27 - EZdrummer 3 - GarageBand)

In this video I explain how I record electronic drums. Which (trigger & midi) settings to make in your module, drum software and DAW, to make sure that what you intend to play is recorded as best as possible. I use a Roland TD-27, EZdrummer 3 and GarageBand. Hope this video is helpful to you!

There’s a better way to separate these tracks. You have to add ezdrummer as a 16 channel instead of stereo. Look it up. It will save you a ton of time. Great video. Thanks for sharing!

I would like to point out that with EZdrummer 3 you can change the velocity curve per pad within EZdrummer an create a midi drum preset so you dont have to change the module pad sensitivities. You can also change the midi note mappings.

Good comment. Both work I believe. I prefer to set sensitivity settings already in the module, so it is closest to my playing style, also if I’m just playing along without recording. About the mapping: I agree, that can be convenient. Thanks!

Thanks for the great video. When you record the audio only, how are you connecting your drums to your computer? I'm guessing this is with the 1/4" master output?

Hi Dave. You can do that via the usb cable from the module to your laptop/pc, (or via an audio interface in between, although that’s not necessary). You could do it also with the 1/4” master out, but then you will only record the master track (stereo) and not all individual tracks.

Hey brother great video!!!! I am in the process of getting a Roland TD27KV for the second time. I just know I can get more out of the drums with Ezdrummer 3 When I had them last I used a focusrite I interface with a windows based Laptop. I still had a lot of latency. I'm wondering if it because I didn't turn local control off? Also I have thought about getting a Mac instead. What specfic apple computer do you use? Thanks!

Thanks Matt! My Mac is about 7 years old, but no latency issues here :). I connect the TD27 directly in my computer with the usb-c cable. Works very well. Yes I believe it is best to turn local control off. When I am recording myself, I don’t mind listening to the sounds of my module (with next to no latency). The recorded sounds are coming from EZD, so after recording you will hear those sounds (which is the goal ;). But also check your sample rate in EZD3, that should be quite low, during recording at least. Sample rate is only relevant during recording. When you listen back and start mixing, you can increase the sample rate again for a better sound quality. Hope that helps a bit! Good luck

Thanks! Do you mean your single midi track? You can export that in GarageBand: Export mix I believe it’s called. So you activate the EZD plugin on the midi track, then you solo that track and click on export. You’ll get a audio/wave file of only the drums. Hope that helps!

Great video! question please. is it possible to do this exercise in order to just play drums through a PA and not record? meaning i just want to have more control over ez drummer 3 and adjust volumes of articulations individually(ex: hi hat bow level tool ow i want to bring it up ,bell on ride and cross stick on snare) or is this only to record drums? Thank you!

Thanks! Yes you can also just play without recording. EZD3 comes as a stand-alone program or you use it as a plug-in in your DAW. And then you’d need to connect your pc to a PA (I’m not an expert on how to do that part…). Important is to make sure the level of latency is acceptable so that your playing remains natural without delay. And you’d need to spend some more time to dial in the volume settings upfront. When recording you can change a lot afterwards, so your initial settings are less strict. Hope that helps!

Thanks Hugo! So you recorded the groove in the standalone version of EZD? Not quite sure if that works. There should be a way I suppose. I do know that in GB you can drag and drop beats from the EZD-plugin onto a midi track (in the DAW). Hope that helps

@@theundercoverscene7247 Well I recorded my beats in the songtrack and mixed them in Ezdrummer since you dont have to deal with the piano-keys layout and you get some nice EQ options. I will try to drag my recorded songtrack beat onto my miditrack in GB when I get the chance. Thanks again for the tutorial.

Are you just using EZD to eq and assign the sounds, and then back to Garageband to mix and export? I guess I missed how the two interact back and forth.

I mix mostly in EZD. This is a midi track in GarageBand. But you can still add further EQ or compression etc on that one midi track in GarageBand (so some additional mixing on the overall drum mix, if that makes sense :).

Do you monitor the EZ Drummer sounds while recording into your DAW through the DAW & Audio interface and not the TD-27 itself?

I prefer to monitor the sounds directly from the TD-27. In theory it should have less latency that way. But both options work.

In GB you can create a midi track and then you activate the plugin EZD3 (on that track). There must be several tutorials that show it in detail. Probably also by Toontrack.

11:29 I see your hits dont fall to the beat. You dont play to a metronome ? So you never quantize anything ?

Good question. Well, when I play a cover I don’t set a bpm, because it can be hard to find the right one. And sometimes the bpm changes over the song. That means I can’t quantize (sometimes I drag single notes slightly manually, if it becomes really annoying 😉, but never too much, otherwise you see it on video… and also because it is rather boring work). If I create music of my own, I do use a metronome and set the bpm in my DAW. But I don’t like to quantize so much. I would only do it on certain parts, or even some notes only. I prefer a more human feel in a song, so with some imperfections. I guess it also depends which genre you play. Hope that helps!
