I've been playing the TD-9SX for over 8 years now. I play it at live outdoor gigs as well as small venues and it has never disappointed me for one second. It's a tough and versatile unit, and the mesh Remo heads are awesome. The whole kit has a fantastic feel and it is so easy to play. There was some trial and error to get the sounds I was looking for (and that's half the fun), but I enjoy having all those voices to play with. Once I configured it the way I wanted it I was totally satisfied.

Thank you, that totally helped when deciding to buy and actually buying a used set with a TD-9. Especially the statement at the end that it's great when using for VST and I agree, the hi hat response is great. Got an old one (just 50 kits) but once you tweak all the trigger and sound settings, it's really great.

A very good video explaining the differences and hacks! I have to say though that I use my TD-9 live and the snake cable is not a hassle. There is one plug and that is it. I have not had any problems(yet) with the cables or connections shorting. I understand that the snake cable can become a hassle if one cable goes bad. That is a large downside. Maybe that is what you mean? For live gigs my snake cable is attached to my frame just as your cables are and all I have to do is plug in my snake cable to the module and done.

I just bought a TD-9 from Japan to change out with my TD-6 mainly for the dual-triggering (I have PDX-8 toms which aren't listed in the TD-6). Excellent video, really enjoyed it thanks 💖 🇨🇦 I just bought a midi->USB adapter (mainly to use to trigger NI VSTi's on my laptop). It has midi in/midi out and all connected to a USB. Would this work as a midi interface controller such as the Steinberg UR22 MK2? Just wondering. No worries, I'll try it when the TD-9 arrives. Update: I want everyone watching this video to know this: I bought a used TD-9 from Japan off eBay. I (thought!) I tried everything to get it to boot to the download/update mode (MUTE + SETUP + POWER) to no avail. I even contacted the seller and let him know I wanted to return the unit for refund ("Not As Described"). Finally I tried it one last time - and I just kept pressing the buttons. Finally after a full minute the module powered on in download mode. It read the files on the flash drive and prompted me to press SONG + F2 to update to v.2. Did so. Took a while but in the end - done! Did the Factory Reset and I'm now a proud owner of a TD-9V.2.

I upgraded my TD-6V 2 years ago to the TD-9 V2. In my opinion, the TD-9 is the best module bang for buck you can buy. The only bad part about it is the custom cable setup using a multipin port instead of standard cables. Also, there is a "yar matey" version 2.0 update floating around online if one cannot get the update from Roland.

I now have a TD-KVX. I dont hate the TD-17 module, but it pales in comparison to the TD-9 module on my ptevious kit. The menu system on the TD-9 was more intuitive, and it had many more sounds onboard. Some say the sounds are better, but Ive not noticed any significant improvement.

I just might go with the TD-9 to just trigger. Was just concerned if the hi-hat will work as good as a TD-20 or TD-30. That's my biggest complaint with Alesis is their poor hi-hat performance. Glad you made this thank you!

you say in the video that a TD9 has to be connected to a computer through a audio/midi interface (like the steinberg ur22). Is that because the TD9 doesnt have a USB tybe B or because an additional processing should be done? Great video as always. Thanks to you your in depth explanations, I am busy with an acoustic to electronic conversion. Maybe you could do a video on the Alesis (or ddrum) trigger IO because it is such an affordable solution to expanding an electronic drum kit. The Roland TD6 also has a midi in connector, I wonder if it also supports the percussion expansion? The TD6 modules should be dirt cheap on the 2nd hand market. Keep up the good work!
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 жыл бұрын
Jock McKenzie Thanks for your feedback. Not sure if the TD-6 has the percussion function. Worth a eraser have though. The trigger IO is very affordable, but doesn’t deliver a great trigger dynamic as most Roland modules.
@jockmckenzie8603
@jockmckenzie8603 6 жыл бұрын
Vdrum Tips I completely agree that the Trigger IO does not offer a fantastic response, my idea would be to trigger the toms and less dynamic components such as a cow bell or the like through the slave trigger IO which would clear up more inputs on the master Roland module for dynamic components such as the snare and chokable cymbals. And I would like to thank you for highlighting the ESI midimate 2 x midi to usb cable in a previous video, it is cheap and works great.

The goedrums hi-hat controller is compatible with the TD-9, however idea to combine it with a CY-12 is very bad. The CY-12 is not really meant to be mounted like this and will die sooner. And this idea is also not cost effective. The cost of both would almost be as much as a VH-10. So better just buy a Roland VH-10.

500$ is a lot for a TD-15...try to get it for 350-400. The sounds of TD-9 or 15 are no where near EZDrummer2. So you might select something completely different if you prefer to use the module sounds.

Hey v drums I’m a big fan of your videos, I’m debating if I should get a current drum module to trigger vst software because they have super natural sounds, do those matter? Because I was thinking the best set up would be a td 12 or 20 for positional sensing and midi in for a slave module. Then I’d have to buy an audio interface to get good latency and best sounds right?
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 жыл бұрын
Raven Mairena The supernatural feature does only concern the module sounds, so there is no point in having it if you trigger vsts. TD12 and 20 are decent.
@ravenmairena3296
@ravenmairena3296 6 жыл бұрын
Vdrum Tips so what’s the point of buying a td 30 for vsts instead of a td 20? Besides the USB feature in the td30?
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 жыл бұрын
Raven Mairena Well, the hi-hat triggering is slightly advanced. The trigger dynamic in general is a bit more accurate, the positional sensing works a bit better. But we are only talking about slight increases. The pros would not use the USB cable anyway, as a MIDI interface can be faster. So in theory you are good with a TD-20 (TDW) or TD-20X, but not with a plain TD-20. This one triggers like a TD-12 (not so good).

Hi, I'm trying to improve my taiwanese edrum-kit (XM Edrum, it's similar to Goedrum) and am currently thinking of replacing its stock module by TD-9. The problem is that XM stock cymbals are all three-zones and have only one input for all three zones (unlike Roland 3-zone cymbals which have 2 inputs to my knowledge). Do you know what happens if I connect TD-9 to XM cymbals? Which zone (or zones) will be dead? Is there any way to connect TD-9 so that all three zones on XM cymbals remain active (at least on the ride cymbal)?
@Vdrumtips1

Thanks! I believe Roland ride cymbals (CY-13R, CY-15R) have two inputs. What about regular dual zone crash cymbals like CY-12? Do they have only one input (like my taiwanese cymbals)? I'm asking because I'm thinking of replacing only the ride cymbal if i get a TD-9.

@glebnovikov9858
@glebnovikov9858 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnyeo3840 Eventually I didn't go this way. I found the quality of XM cymbals really bad. Mine simply cracked one-by-one and later broke into pieces. In the end, I had to replace all cymbals. So, in my opinion XM cymbals are not worth a Roland module. I actually found the XM module (mine is 8S model) not as bad as it seemed to me at first, you can tweak pretty good sounds out of it and it doesn't feel too bad. So, I think it's ok to play the XM module until your cymbals break, later you can upgrade both and I personally think the cymbals come in the first place.

Well, you're using sounds from the Drum-Tec video of TD-11 and TD-9:) Because you don't have one.

GTA V Music Well spotted. I linked the drum-tec sound bundles, as I think they did a great job getting the most out of the modules. I have some old recordings of my former TD-9, but I did not do anything with the sounds, nor do I own a TD-11. All module sounds are from drum-tec. I will do the same for future Module videos.

@@Vdrumtips1 It is now year 2020 and I just upgraded my Roland TD-6 module to the TD-9 (version 1). Can you recommend the the best update for it (for under $100)? I saw (www.drum-tec.com/Real-Acoustics-Sound-Edition-Roland-TD-9-v1.0-Download) Real Acoustics Sound Edition Roland TD-9 v1.0 [Download] for only 32 euro and am now thinking of buying it! I’m only looking for good acoustic rock sounding drums btw. Thanks for your AWESOME VIDEOS Vdrum Tips!!! AE-Kiko fr Seattle, WA.
