this year I returned to eDrums and bought a used TD-12 for gigging. Despite editing best I could, I wasn't excited by the sounds; mostly the snare sounds. I just bought a TD-30 and so far very pleased. I have much to learn.

Justin, I finally purchased the Roland TD-30k kit, after going through 5 low to midrange drum kits (Alesis Forge, Alesis Crimson, Roland TD-11kv, Roland TD-25k and Roland TD-25KV. I was never happy with any of these kits as they had their limitations, both sonically and expansion wise. I kicked around the idea of getting the Strike Pro, but no stores had demo models and the web videos of the unit screamed "don't get me". My only alternative was to get the TD-30. Your in-depth videos on the playability, editing, sounds and general enthusiasm about the kit really tipped the scale for me. I really liked the TD-25kv, but I ran into a wall with its obvious limitations. Since I purchased all the previous kits at GC with the pro coverage, I was able to "own" the aforementioned sets for over a month each, so I have gained much knowledge about drums and these kits. I feel like I'm kind of an expert on these kits, which really helped me to realize you get what you pay for and the only way to go with e-drums is in purchasing a Roland flagship model. Like you, I just want to play. I am a multi instrumentalist and have a complete midi studio, but I just want to sit down and play a good kit. I feel the TD-30k will allow me to finally enjoy playing. Thank you for all of the valuable tips! PS: Does the TD-30 allow you to assign separate head and rim sounds?

Thank you so much for this. I'm only part of the way through but I'm finding this to be so much better than the manual. To be honest I got bored with the manual and just started to figure things out on my own. One of the aspects i particularly like about your tutorial is the fact that you explain exactly which buttons you're pressing as well as showing them. This means that blind drummers like myself can follow along. Keep up the awesome work.

Hi Justin I can't thank you enough for the tutorials and all your info on various kits ,any time I need info I head right for your sites no BS just the facts .I recently bought a Strike Pro, well ya try to save a buck ya get what you pay for .The strike pro has some great sounds lots of funky toys but the processing needs so much help .The way the kits load is ridiculous and the effects sometimes follow 36 secs later, so in a live situation you yell to the guitar player "hey dude can you wait 36 secs for my kit to load" I mean how much $$$ is ram "ALESIS !!!" SO I thought I will try something, I rented a TD 30 module WOW!!! I don't have to tell you strike pro is like a toy compared to it ...tomorrow I'm buying the module ..took a little bit to adjust settings but everything works even that cheap Hi Hat .used vh13 settings and little bit of tweaking ...just used your site to transfer settings to other kits thanks for the info saved me major time ..thank you thank you :):):):)

Your description of the compressor is wrong. It CAN do what you say (levelling out your dynamics), but it depends on how you set up. The way you set it up can make your kit sounds more punchy, less punchy, etc

A feature missing is pattern creator. With my Yamaha DTX II (18 yrs old) you can record or program a pattern choosing either live or note by note. Can choose time signature and set beats per minute. I'm sure I can use software to edit and chain but it would be nice on the module.

Hi Justin, really great video. I just got a TD30 and this really helped a lot! One question I have which I can't find anything about is the snare strainer adjustment (Inst > Edit > Muffle > strainer adj.). It seems that I can't get into that field to be able to adjust it from "loose" to tight. It looks like it's locked since the arrow down key does not respond when I try to get into the field where it says "loose". Do you know if this is indeed the case or that there is a workaround to get it more "tight"?

That is a deep rabbit hole. But awesome. Its funny I kinda feel roland and its sounds are for the guys who want the polished and processed sound of modern drums. Basically the guys who want to have the sounds of the albums on their module. It would seem like the strike, atv and 2 box focus more on natural acoustic sounds. Unfortunately for me I like the processed sounds. Gotta love the import functions.

Yeah it'll work with pretty much any mesh pad you throw at it. And it'll work with most crash cymbals. The Hi-hat and Ride depends on the wiring. Brands like yamaha won't work, but ATV will. So double check before buying random cymbals

It's like the chicken and the egg. Which do you edit first? Because they interact
@65Drums
@65Drums 7 жыл бұрын
It's a tough balance, my suggestion is get your drums sounding 90% of the way you want with editing the instruments first. Then go edit ambiance with a VERY light touch to finish the sound. In my mind, if you can easily notice the room ambiance/reverb/overhead mic placement, it's too heavy. Try messing with the ambiance slider on the mixer faders.

Great video! I've recently purchased the TD30K, and I love it! I came from a TD11KV, so the difference is incredible. My question is, how do I set the rim of a tom to be different to that of the head on the same tom? I could easily do it with the TD11, but I can't seem to get say a hi-hat on the rim, and a deep tom on the head.

Thanks for a great informative video on effects I didn't know (or were afraid) to mess with... However what would also help is if you had a video actually demonstrating the effects/changes as you make them. This would allow a more real experience. I guess I can play myself (and will) but Id like to short list the main effects determined by listening to your changes as you make them. I appreciate this would make the video long but it could be split up. Also to know what is the default settings and what not to ned changing. Also how to name user kits if possible? tks

Hi Justin, love your channel. Super informative and you play like a Beast!! The first synth stuff at the start of this vid, is that a preset on the TD30, and do you know if the same is on Td25 ???? Keep up the great work

Justin, great tutorial. I am a first-time digital kit owner so the learning curve is quite steep. I have two questions: first, it seems no matter which pre-set kit I attempt to edit, it will not allow me to tab down to the strainer adjustment in the editing. Is this normal? Second, is there a way to copy a sound from one kit and import it to another? Example, I like the cross-sticking sound from the #4 Burnin' kit and would like to import it to the Nashville kit...is this possible? Thanks, Steve

+XDrummerSteve I already made a tutorial video last week on how to copy drums/kits/effects :) also there are only like 2 or 3 snares that have a flexible snare chain option. Kinda sucks :/

Amazing Video! Thank you so much! You actually got me playing on my TD-30 again. I was just too lazy to figure out all these settings by myself, and the Tutorial Roland gives away with the kit ist not really helpful. I have one Question though: I really am a Hard-Hitter. When playing on the TD-30 the Trigger Lights are almost always in the red area. Do you think this is a problem and will eventually result in failure of the electronics, or should I just not worry that much and keep playing the way I play? Thanks in advance!

Can you make a video showing how to make a custome kit placing different sounds on different parts of the kit...

Anthony, I'm curious regarding what you mean exactly? Do you mean, like moving cymbals sounds into drum pads or percussion into bass drum pads, or...? I'm not sure what you mean...

Thanks for the video! I have converted my acoustic kit to an e-kit with Remo Silentstroke heads, Roland RT30 Triggers (all dual) and the TD30 module with Zildjian Gen16 cymbals. My question is...how do I connect the DCP of the cymbals to the Roland module? Can I go direct or do I have to connect both modules to a mixer? Thanks!
@65Drums
@65Drums 7 жыл бұрын
You can connect the cymbal module to the Mix In on the back of your module. Or you can go to a mixer like you said.

Thanks for the reply. So far I went from the roland mod to the zildjian mod. But I'm not happy with the cymbal mods sound so I'm gonna try to e.q. them in a mixer. I'll report back what works best!

thanks for the video, i bought this kit about a week ago and love it, still learning as I'm going on. A few question i have, is changing triggers an important thing? when i play sometimes i see the trigger volume meter go all the way up to red and i sometimes think to myself if i am hitting it too hard? is this the case? i read a guide from a member of a Vdrums website stating which are the perfect setting for beginners. http//www.vdrums.com/forum/advanced/technical/67143-roland-module-tuning-trigger-setup-initial-settings-discussions. Do you agree with this? I'm trying to get the most out of the Kit and don't want a continue forever adjustment as long as i have this kit. Also the volume of your faders is that what you usually play with? I tried recording the other night from L and R output onto my phone and i could hardly hear the bass. Im thinking i have my cymbals too high
@65Drums
@65Drums 7 жыл бұрын
The triggers sensitivity should be high enough that when you hit hard, the meter maxes out. As for the volume, it changes from kit to kit. Just remember the kick and snare are the most important thing as far as volume goes. Try increasing the low end with eq. Go to the eq section and increase it a bit. It will help the feel of your whole set :)

Great video, although I watched hoping to learn how to assign the rim of the floor Tom to a different sound like on my old td-9 I want to add a bass drop of some sort like the old "super low" but I can't figure it out. Not as simple as the old module.
