Roland TR-8S Tutorial - Firmware 2.0 - Importing FM Kits and Patterns

In this video, I show you the procedure for importing the new FM kits and patterns. This is only possible through this method for now. You will have to perform a backup, an update to 2.0, a factory reset, another backup, and a restore before being able to import the new kits and patterns at your leisure.

Thanks for the vid, really helpful. Just a question, is there a way to import some of the new patterns (with kit) and overwrite them on one of the old factory patterns (i.e. Berlin flyover etc...)? Thanks

Yes. Make sure you follow the video here and backup the 2.0 after the factory reset. Once you restore back to your pre 2.0 kits/patterns, you can import any kit or pattern with kit from the backup. Just overwrite the old presets. When choosing the import destination, you will see the names of the pattern/kit slot you are importing to.

They are a great pair! Using the ACB and FM tones on the TR-8S and keeping additional drum samples and synth tracks on the 707 is a dream!

@@UnitE808 Thanks - been wondering if it was worth buying the TR-8S, thanks for clearing that one. Looking at the Korg Minilogue XD as well to get as a synth and have some additional keys to create some loops. I think actual piano keys are a bit more comfortable than those pads to make a tune.

thanks for the videos! can you help me with my doubt, I want connect my keystep pro with the tr8s (slave) by midi, but after connect idk what to do. (keystep pro Im using with Logic ProX) btw If I want connect both into Logic for record, I need to do the channels of the tr8s + the channels of the keystep pro ? THANKS

Hi. Make sure the keystep pro and TR-8S are on the same midi channel. I haven't set up a keystep with Logic, but they both should work pretty seamlessly with it.

Can you show how to have delay on only one instrument? I figured how to assign the control knob to send delay. But when I turn the delay up all instruments have delay. Thank you, and thanks for all these tutorials

Are those caps chroma caps? I don't see Tr-8s as compatible device on their website

No, they're not Chroma Caps. These are from Roland. They were giving them away at conventions a few years ago. They were going to sell them but I guess the demand wasn't there.

PLEASE HELP ME OUT, Unit:E, I dont get it how to make only certain tracks be longer than 16 steps (shorter than 32). I know 100% it's possible, it figured it out the other and now, no clue why I can't reproduce this "function"... So basically, Variation A + B chained, BD playing 4 on the floor through (all 32 steps), but lets say HC playing only 21 steps... appreciate a million!!!

@@michaelolaleye5215 make sure to select the variation too (A-H). If you press the instrument select buttons (BD-RC) and the steps turn multi-colored like the 808 color scheme, press the button again to bring up the step sequencing mode.

Yes. Plug in the usb between the computer and the TR-8S. Turn on the TR-8S while holding shift. A window should open on the computer. Drag the bin file into the window. Eject the TR-8S properly then unplug the usb. The update should start.

Thanks a lot! Why does it have to be so painful? A firmware update should only update the system and not erase user data... New kits and patterns should be packaged separately and installable separately, in whatever slots the user wants. SysEx was much better than these supposedly user-friendly but stultifying procedures.

It generally is like that, but this major update added new patterns and kits, so anything in those spots got overwritten. All other updates for the TR-8S didn't mess with kits or patterns. This is true for all hardware devices.
