Thanks, RG, for this interview with a rather overlooked player. I think Chang was unfortunate, like Tim Henman, in coming up amongst a group of champions, he may well have won more titles otherwise.

EPIC!!!! During that time (era), we were all going Michael Michael Michael!!! It was crazy becos we were thousands of miles away in a small tiny country in South East Asia. This boy of our age who shared the same Mother tongue had become our Hero! 💪💪💪💪👍👍👍

Thank you Michael! I am ethnic Chinese, and of course I root for Michael. And I idolise Lendl, and I can shamelessly say I copied Lendl's stroke mechanics while I was learning the game. And of course who wouldn't be floored by Edberg's elegance in those years? The 1989 Roland Garros was SPECIAL! I still have a few Prince Graphite, Addidas Lendl, and Wilson Pro Staff in my little collection of vintage rackets, and I am still playing them these days.

8:29 chang walking up to the line for the second serve, is that allowed in tennis.
@lolcat97442 ай бұрын
You can stand anywhere to return serve, even in the service box if you want but you must allow the ball to bounce first. Chang did that to put pressure on Lendl to hit an outstanding 2nd serve, otherwise Chang will hit an angle winner on match point. If you watch that match Lendl was the better player skills wise, but Chang was the better tactician.

@@lolcat9744 Actually, Michael once said that he purposely stood on that position to risk and pressure Lendl to hit a double fault and that made a successful attempt, otherwise, it was no difference to suicide standing right ther

In those days, you just played straight out bashing tennis. Neither hit much in the way of slice or drop shots. It was just big shot after big shot. Today's players hit even harder which opens up the drop shot as an effective way to deal with those who stand way behind the baseline.
