Steve Stevens has got to be on the most underrated and unappreciated pro guitarists around. His ability to weave jazz into his work with Idol has always endeared him to me. The fact that he's a hell of shredder doesn't hurt either. They always say you may not want to meet your idols...Not so with Steve, I'll bet.

Apologize for a stupid question: did Fender make the guitar and Roland did the electronics? Or did Roland make the guitar and licensed the Fender name? I guess technically, you can buy Fender bodies and Fender necks with that badass trademark headstock. With Fender tuners of course and tuning bridge. It looks like a standard Fender finish on the body. So bolt everything together and then drop in what look like standard single coil Strat pick-ups but considering they can sound like humbuckers, too, they must be those stacked single coils that can be either single or dual coil. And then Roland does all the electronics that allows one guitar to be a dozen guitars, at very least? How does that work? Also noticed the bridge did not feature a standard Fender whammy bar, although I don't recall Steve ever needing one or using one. I just wonder if Roland offers a VG Strat with a whammy bar option. And is there a scalloped fretboard/neck option for the Ritchie Blackmores and Yngwie Malmsteens out there. This guitar hybrid actually allows you to have multiple virtual guitars all in one instrument so you never have to change guitars. You just flip your toggle switch and get nearly every guitar you want in one instrument. Including a sitar! (The little bit of sitar Steve played brought to mind that kick ass 80's metal tune "All Lips and Hips" by the Electric Boys with all its stomp and swagger; it starts out with that sitar and then switches gears and just stomps you into the ground. This guitar would be the perfect way to pull that song off.) I guess making one guitar sound like a pedal steel guitar, a ukulele, a lute, and a mandolin, too, would have been asking too much?😉 I kid, I kid. Although, having said that? If they can do all that with one Strat, just imagine what they could do with an 8 or 9 string djent guitar...or a ten string. The mind boggles, but then Roland could literally put every guitar imaginable in one guitar. I like that you can switch between the various guitars. One wonders if there is a feature where with one switch you could be playing all the various guitars at once, like a one-person guitarchestra. But that's just my warped mind's thought process. And give it the capability of playing two or three or four guitars, then make it able to record chunks of music, like so many bars of rhythm guitar/s, then be able to loop those continuously, so you could solo over the top in one, two, three, or four guitar mode, and allow the guitars to either all be the same notes or harmonized. So essentially, one guitarist could play harmonies with him or herself in multiple configurations. Imagine Joe Walsh playing the entire Eagles "Hotel California" harmony twin lead guitar solo all by himself on just one guitar. Speaking of boggled minds. Of course how many guitarists might get put out of work might be a concern. Then again, if three or four guitarists in one band were each playing a full-blown guitarchestra guitar, just imagine the intense sonic insanity of THAT... (My brain has a little too much free time on its hands, apparently.)

Fender's version of this was called the STRAT VG in 2006 and 2007. I own one. It's a US made Strat where the Roland G-5 uses a Mexican Strat. Roland continued with the project and added newer sounds that my Fender does not have. I asked Roland if there was a firmware upgrade and got NO COMMENT. They later came out with a G-5A which used a USA made Strat but only came in red color (WHY THAT ROLAND????). ANd then they ended this project altogether in favor of a newer products like the VG-55, VG-99 (discontinued) and a new one supposedly coming. Sheesh! The beauty of the VG/G-5/G-5A was that you just plugged in.... no pedalboard or big buss connectors or hassle.... THEY SHOULD STILL MAKE THIS GUITAR!!! IT'S AWESOME. I'll never get rid of mine until the day I die. I wish I could upgrade my VG to the G-5A specs, but.... *sigh* BTW, Fender made a great little modeling amp that I have.... a GDEC 30 which was abandoned in lieu of their Mustang series. Damn! Can't leave good enough alone or just tweak it? And don't take this video down Roland. Steve is a master and I watch this all the time as an inspiration to do better with my VG.
