Apart from the onviction with which he sings, what sets Villazon apart from the many is his faithfulness to the score. Cilea is not a great composer, but this aria is a real gem. Most tenors, however, cannot resist the temptation to show off their top"B" at the end, thus destroying the melodic line as well as the musical logic of the piece. Villazon is not tempted even for a second. He sings what is written, thus expressing the power of the music in all its fullness. Bravo, maestro. You join the ranks of singers like Bergonzi, whose voices are so good that they have no need to resort to cheap showmanship.

When my late teacher first heard Villazon he told me, 'there is another one', meaning that he felt there was now another great tenor in the World (a Gigli, a Bergonzi, a Del Monaco). It's so tragic that his career didn't last. This is truly great singing.

This aria is one of my favourites. As I said, Mario Lanza 'taught' me this aria and he was my favourite singer for many years, but now - how does one describe this rendition of E la solita storia? Rolando gives his all in this aria - he always gives everything he's got - but I know that talent and music comes from God. God gives talent and music, and man becomes so much greater than himself. I do believe that Rolando's ability lies in himself to a great extent, but he was given an awesome gift and I always try to appreciate it to it's fullest extent. Maybe other voices are better, I don't know - but, for me, Rolando Villazon has it all. Much love, Cora xxx (Again, only my opinion, of course). xxx

Mario Lanza taught me this song. He sang it in one of his films. He had a 'darker' voice than Rolando, as if he laboured more when he sang, but I know that is not true. His was just a different way of singing. The music is absolutely amazing, as if it was sent from heaven.... Only my opinion, of course.
