Great perspective on job descriptions, that I haven’t really ever liked. But with this I get it: it’s not either/or - there a middle ground, so next time I face job descriptions, I will definately go with competence, clarity and control! Thanks tons David!!

Hi David, thank you for that perspective. I often refer to job descriptions as purchase agreements. In return for $XXX we are purchasing the the following tangible and intangible outcomes/deliverables. This is what happens in the real world - as in the case of the industry that called you in to advise them on job descriptions. As an organisational psych I have to deal with a lot of performance issues and I generally start by asking "What are you being paid to do?". This opens up a great discussion around clarity, control and competence. In respect of competence, I like Robert Mager and Peter Pipe's (Analyzing Performance Problems) Colt 45 test - could the person do the task if their life depended on it? If 'Yes', it is a motivation issue, if 'No' it is a training issue.

good point. we've seen examples where people think they still have freedoms they signed away. in a team, you make a commitment and we need to be able to count on you.

I think that technical skills are usually well described as it is easy to do. The purpose (the why) is not as clear unfortunately whereas it seems to me as the most important and gives room for creativity.
