Role Playing Games - Conan from Mongoose Publishing

Another version of the Conan Roleplaying Game, this time from Mongoose Publishing. From the OGL or D20 system.

Hi! I like the art direction/graphic design of the Mongoose Publishing 1st ed Conan rpg, the GM screen for this version is one of my favourite GM screens in my collection, though unfortunately the OGL game system dose not work well for the Conan setting in my personal opinion. Modiphius publishing picked up the Conan licence and has done a good job with it, but again let down by a clunky game system, the best Conan rpg I have found is the old TSR edition, good art direction/graphic design is non existent and the game system is basic, but works extremely well in simulating a world of savage sword and sorcery, And I'm happy I have it in my collection.

Dungeon Crawl Classics works really well for Sword and Sorcery games as well. It's not near as complex of a system as the size of the book lets on.

I'd agree that normal D20/DnD isn't so hot for S&S games, but this game (2nd edition specifically) changes the rules in enough mea ingful ways that it's pretty good. In fact I think this game is actually the best version of DnD that came out. I also really like the TSR version (or the updated Zephyrs version). I vastly prefer Modiphius 2d20 game though. Not just for Conan, but as a system in general. We never found it clunky, but actually really smooth, thematic and just badass in practice (book is hard to digest at first though). Hopefully the new Conan Rpg coming from Monolith is the best yet.

wow LOVE THIS GAME....I think this is the best conan game ever, blows away the TSR and the current Free League publishing versions. I have all the books of the Mongoose version.

Modiphius has the entire series at (at time of this reply) 50% off and a bulk deal for $30US as electronic books. I bought them just for background material. Haven't tried the 2D20 system.

@@TheDustedGameShelf yes MOdphius I sometimes mistake them for free league both are Swedish RPG companies. anyways, yah I found the Mongoose conan to be more realistic in the call of cthulhu sense than the Modphidius version. which I noticed is toned down.

I was unaware of Conon RPG style games. Your collection looks very well cared for. The art no matter dated for obvious reasons still looks good in my book. Thanks for sharing.

I seem to recall that the game had some pretty uncomfortable stats for certain characters ...apparently the Black Kingdoms characters, iirc, have bonuses to throwing spears and jumping

I believe the Southern Black Kindgdoms are based on the Dinka tribe who traditionally wield spears and are known for a jumping dance they do. You can probably find them dancing on KZbin.
