Contact tmosso@thewatchbox.com for pricing and availability; Either I have it, or I can get it! Grand Seiko vs Rolex resumes with a marquee matchup: Grand Seiko Spring Drive Automatic SBGA211 and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 126300. One is Grand Seiko “high intensity” titanium, and the other is Rolex 904L stainless steel. Both luxury watch contenders are 41mm men’s watches designed for every occasion from beaches to tailgate parties. These automatic luxury timepieces will be put to the test on this installment of Tim Mosso’s “Versus” on Watchbox Reviews!
The Grand Seiko Spring Drive Automatic SBGA211 represents the 2017 facelift of the prior Grand Seiko SBGA011.
Aside from the replacement of “Seiko” with a “Grand Seiko” logo at 12 o’clock on the dial, nothing has changed. Officially named the “Snowflake” by Grand Seiko designers and watchmakers, this Spring Drive automatic is defined by all dial features EXCEPT the loco. Undulating “snow drifts” and peaks are executed with a combination of stamping techniques, varnish, and galvanizing. Although the Grand Seiko champagne dial’s fabrication is more complex, the character of the “Snowflake” is redolent of northern Japan’s winter landscape and more charismatic than anything else hailing from the brand’s Nagoya shops.
A 41mm case of “high intensity” titanium (likely a grade five titanium alloy) sports curves, creases, and a mix of satin and polished surfaces. All polished facets are executed via Grand Seiko’s “Zaratsu” tin plate polishing technique. Zaratsu, which produces a mirror-like finish, is executed principally my manual means and is guided by the craft experience of the individual artisans. Strap tool apertures in the Grand Seiko’s lugs provide a sharp contrast with the seamless flanks of the modern-era Rolex. A matching titanium bracelet with a deployant clasp completes the equipment; water resistance to 100-meters is assured by a screw-down crown.
The Grand Seiko spring drive caliber 9R65 is both the most impressive and most controversial aspect of the SBGA211’s engineering. As a hybrid of a mechanical movement and a quartz caliber, the Spring Drive Automatic has potential to alienate mechanical watch purists. But those that dismiss Spring Drive as just another disposable device are ignoramuses, not connoisseurs. With no batteries, no capacitors, and no motors, Spring Drive achieves quartz levels of precision (+/- 15 seconds per MONTH) with motive power by mainspring and watchmaker serviceability for the lifetime of the owner - and then some.
The 30-jewel Grand Seiko 9R65 is 70-hour power reserve automatic movement with a power reserve indicator, stop seconds (hacking), and a date display.
Rolex’s Datejust 41 arrived at Baselworld 2016; today’s full stainless steel reference 126300 arrived a year later. While the Datejust II offered an appealing full-size alternative to the traditional 36mm Datejust, the “Deuce’s” dial and case proportions didn’t please all watch collectors and Rolex buyers. The Datejust 41mm resolves most of these shortcomings while adding a next-generation Rolex 3235 automatic caliber.
The 41mm stainless steel Rolex case is crafted from the brand’s highly anti-corrosive 904L stainless steel. Its bezel differs from the gold models in its use of a flat surface angled in a cone form around the dial. A matching 904L Oyster bracelet and a deployant clasp with Rolex “Easylink” complete the accessories. Easylink permits 5mm of tool-free size adjustments, and three alternative anchoring points inside the Oyster clasp permits additional adjustment with a conventional strap tool. The Rolex Datejust 41 is water resistant to 100 meters.
Rolex offers an array of dial, metal, and bracelet options for the Datejust 41, so the model carries more options for tailored appearance than the take-it-or-leave-it titanium Snowflake. The Rolex 126300 featured in this comparison includes a matte white dial with white gold indices featuring luminescent paint for nighttime use. A Cyclops eye date magnifier is present, but its humpback form is less obtrusive on the 41mm Datejust than on smaller models and the 36mm Day-Date.
Rolex’s caliber 3235 automatic movement provides motive force for the Datejust 41. This next-generation Rolex movement employs a “Chronergy” escapement, reprofiled mainspring barrel, and a larger mainspring in order to boost the caliber 3135’s power reserve from 48 to 70 hours. A stop seconds (hacking) feature, quickset date, and COSC chronometer certification are standard in all models. Additional refinements include a full balance bridge, a free sprung balance with Rolex Microstella balance bolts, and a Breguet overcoil hairspring rendered in antimagnetic “Parachrom Blue” alloy.
Rolex vs Grand Seiko starts now!

Literally just bought my Snowflake 1 hour ago. I own a few Rolexes and there is simply nothing “wrong” with a Rolex. I love all three of mine. And I’m certainly in the honeymoon phase of the Snowflake, by my goodness, in person this thing is gorgeous. Funny story, while I was waiting for the Snowflake to be delivered to the store (the place I bought it from had two stores, and the one near me didn’t have one in stock, so the owner made the 90 minute round trip to the other store to get the SBGA211 for me. While waiting, I hit the pub next door, wearing my DSSD. Within 30 minutes, the guy next to me at the bar said “Is that a Rolex?!” In the decade I’ve owned watches, I swear to you that NO ONE has ever asked about my watch. Coincidence? Yeah, probably. Anyway, I know that will never happen with the GS. This watch is just a beauty. More dressy than sport, but I’m wearing a long sleeve T and jeans and I don’t think it looks out of place. One of the best benefits? My wife, who knows “just” enough about watches to be dangerous will see “Seiko” and think I was responsible. :) Sorry for the long post, but I’m in love with this piece.

If you have to answer to your wife about how you spend your hard earned money on a watch after supporting her, paying all the bills, and putting all 3 of your kids thru college, then the "SNOWFLAKE" was definitely a watch made for someone like you.

You know that guy that sat at the bar next to the Rolex store, he's probably twigged that people are going to come in and toast their latest Swiss purchase. A quick text to his mates on scooters with helmets and your love affair with your new timepiece could be quite short lived. Just saying...

Noticed your story about the guy asking what was your watch. Same here, in seven years of watch collecting, nobody has ever asked me what was the timepiece on my wrist. But when your read watch blogs/websites, there’s always a story about this or that model being a great conversation piece. Maybe it only applies to the rarefied elite rocking early, no crown guards Submariners or rose gold Pateks...

I am an electrical engineer and appreciate that you used the term "Back EMF". Many reviewers describing the movement simply refer to it as "feedback", or something else more vague. I own a Datejust, and while I love it, being an electrical engineer who have worked with many outstanding mechanical engineers, I am fascinated with the GS Spring Drive technology. It is my dream watch. Thanks for the excellent comparison.

What do you think about the new 9RA2 movement? Also, in your opinion as an electrical engineer, what is your evaluation of the level of technical innovation that is the spring drive as I've heard someone say it's a simple control system to which I would wonder why it took 20 years to create. I am envisioning as they improve efficiency in the future that the movements will get thinner and the power reserve will get longer as it's already at 5 days with the new generation. Grand Seiko have also invented a torque return system which adds half a day of power reserve but they refuse to put it in the lower end calibers.

I was tossing up between these two. I didn't own a Rolex or a Grand Seiko. My nearest Rolex dealer wanted me to join a waiting list and suggested I might get one in about 2 years depending how many of their existing customers want them as they arrive. I called the Grand Seiko Boutique in London. It arrived next day. Could the Rolex have been better? Maybe, but I didn't want to wait 2 years to find out. Very pleased with the GS.

I bought my snowflake a week ago after thinking about it for half a year. It has been on my mind because of the amazing spring drive technology as well as its beautiful design and dial finishing. When I went to look at it in person I had decided I would buy it if it was really 'all that' in person, and I have to say that it was. Even after comparing much more expensive, fancier watches, I simply find the Grand Seiko Snowflake to be the most beautiful watch I have ever seen. When you look at this watch in person, you immediately know that this is something special - the beautiful finish and the light reflections alongside with the dial and incredibly smooth sweep of the second hand brings an emotion of perfection to mind. I LOVE IT!

Actually the pin sleeves aren’t a cost saving measure, they’re a material limitation. Titanium doesn’t take threading well due to it’s more brittle nature, so they had to go with simple holes.

One needs Titanium screws for Titanium threads to work. But you better torque it to at least 32 N/cm or it will vibrate itself loose. Not many people have a mini torque wrench and that alone might cost about USD $2000.

I Just purchased the snowflake in Bangkok yesterday and I’m floored by the sheer presence of this piece, there’s no point to lament, Tim describes it perfectly save for its brilliance, the way light plays on the dial is a thing of endless beauty. Just my two cents worth here, as a watch aficionado and graphic designer: I cannot overlook the garish, old English font on the Seiko. Makes it look as if it comes out of the middle ages! If/when they were to clean that up/modernize it, then its definitely a contender. Just IMHO.

My wife has the exact Datejust 41 with the dark gray color. However, I've decided to add the Snowflake into the collection as this beautiful handcrafted piece of art incorporates decades of cutting edge science into an icon that simply defines modern watchmaking as it should be. I doubt that Grand Seiko could ever mass-produce this watch to level that Rolex does, nor should they. In the end, Grand Seiko delivers both Art and Science, while Rolex deliviers old science with modern updates at best.

Tim’s comments on both watches are entirely spot on, except that in reality you cannot decide “this is my only choice” but can only decide “this is the one I would get first.” I own a Datejust 16220 and a GS SBGE013, among which I got the DJ first. If I were to decide this time, I would again choose the DJ41 first mainly due to the lume and the upgraded jubilee bracelet, even though I know I can't live without unparalleled utility of a Spring Drive.

Suggestion: can you make sure whenever comparing two or more watches, they are all set at the same second hand setting? Hate to see one watch few seconds ahead or behind the other. I would set it the accurate atomic time. It also becomes a great reference for the watches themselves and we can appreciate the moving of the seconds hand in tandem.

Thanks for the video, Tim. I was on the fence with this one until I saw your video. Went out to buy the Snowflake to commemorate the birth of my 2nd son two days ago. I must say, it is gorgeous! And the best thing is, you can buy it when you want it, no ridiculous queues / “sold out” replies like Rolex. I was actually looking for a white face watch, the Explorer II polar, but even that is sold out everywhere! That actually knocked some sense into me - after all, I have several rolexes including a 2007 sub, the Kermit, 1995 root beer, Batman, half-gold Black MOP Daytona (for my wife). I also have an AP Jumbo and ROO. In the end, I really think this GS snowflake completes my collection. Tops it off with cutting edge hybrid mech-quartz technology, and the level of detailing and finishing equal an AP. Thanks again, Tim! Trust that your channel is always my first and last place to go before I pull the trigger on any watch. Cheers! P.S. I wonder if you have come across the Gerald Genta Gefica Kilimanjaro Limited Edition (100 pieces) White Dial before? I have one, and I’m on the fence if I should sell it.

I bought my wife a 26mm datejust on the oyster braclet. She has allergies to cheap or high nickel metals so she always needs stainless steel like for her apple watch. She wore the rolex for 3 days and now she has hives all around her wrist because rolex uses high nickel steel instead of 316l stainless steel like just about every other manufaturer. Why does nobody talk about this? So many people have nickel allergies.

@@Heywoodthepeckerwood You have to understand I posted over a year ago. I bought the Snowflake and then another Rolex. At that time, I was able to go into my AD and he had a few decent things displayed. For a time I was switching off 2 watches a day, to keep the dates right etc. For the last 6 months, the only watch, I wear is the Grand Seiko. It weighs nothing and is incredibly comfortable. I like it better than my Rolexes. After buying the Rolex, my AD offered me a Submariner. I should have taken it and flipped it, but I didn’t want to lay out over 10 grand. I already had lost my mind and bought 2 expensive watches. I am out of the Rolex fog. I really think Grand Seiko is the better watch.

The best way I can sum this up... If you like Japanese watches get the Grand Seiko. If you like Swiss, get the Rolex. Personally, I find too much similarity between high end and low end Seiko designs, (including the movements) It's the finishing that differs. As for Spring Drive? I find half quartz, half mechanical watches to be just plain wrong! But I have no problem with one or the the other.
@Richie_P
@Richie_P 5 жыл бұрын
To be fair, if the fact that the Datejust is offered in other versions counts as an advantage, then the GS also is offered in different versions. Sure, the "snowflake" dial is only paired with the titanium case and spring drive movement. But you can get a nearly identical steel case with an assortment of not only dial options, but movement options, including spring drive GMT, mechanical, mechanical GMT, high-beat, etc, even high-end quartz if you want.

Seeing them next to each other, I'm surprised at how much better I like the Rolex, being that this isn't even a Rolex that I'd consider buying (I'm more of a steel sports guy). GS has all these cool individual aspects; the textured dial and that special, beautiful hand finish, and the spring drive movement. But when I look at these things as a whole, the Rolex just looks better. I'm not a fan of the radically different fonts on the GS and the power reserve indicator is always an eyesore for me. The Rolex may not have the fancy, hand finished dial, but everything on the dial is proportional and looks better- the logo, the font, etc... Also not a fan of the case proportions (too chunky for a dressier piece) while the Rolex is perfect on any wrist.

I have this Rolex and used to own a different GS. They are so difficult to compare: Swiss vs. Japanese design sensibilities. My Rolex is accurate to about 10 seconds a month which is nice for a purely mechanical timepiece and the 70hr power reserve comes in handy. The Rolex is so simple, sleek with pure “watch” DNA. I just love it but it think it comes down to a matter of personal taste vs objective benefits one way or another.
