Rolex Daytona Ceramic vs Steel - We Take A Look Inside! 116500 vs 116520

We've never opened up a watch for you on KZbin before. This time, we did it with two steel Rolex Daytona models, the newer ceramic Daytona and the older stainless steel model...so get ready!

Rolex Daytona Ceramic 116500 - This steel Daytona with the ceramic dial was introduced in 2016. You can buy this one in both a white and black dial version and as of the date of this video, the market price for a pre-owned model was around $21,000.
Rolex Daytona Reference 116520 - This is stainless steel Daytona model prior to the ceramic one was introduced in 2000. We used the white dial version on the video, even though the watch also comes in the black dial version. The older Daytona uses the same movement as the newer model. The price of the 116520 Daytona was around $17,000 on the day this video was released.
Both Rolex Daytona models are not easy to find because the older model has already been discontinued and the ceramic Daytona continues to experience a high demand in the market.
Even though the steel and ceramic models both come with a 40-mm case, the newer model tends to look a little bit bigger because of the higher contrast on the bezel. The mirrored finish of the older stainless model makes it a look a little smaller.
As Danny mentioned on the video, the ceramic Daytona has a more formal look to it than the previous model, so it would be appropriate to wear with a suit or a more formal attire. The older Daytona model can be better used as a daily beater. Nevertheless, be careful if you decide to get the 116520 Daytona because the steel bezel tends to scratch easier. Even though the patented "Cerachrom" bezel of the newer Daytona is technically scratch resistant, it can chip or shatter and it is expensive to replace...so don't bang it up!

Eric decided to leave the company and go independent. Losing subs after losing a host that has been showing his face for years is normal. As a channel, we plan on covering a lot of more detailed topics that we never covered before and improve our content over time. We also plan on releasing a higher quantity of content as well. It’s curious that in the case of a Sub, I prefer the newest version (114060 ceramic bezel), but in this case, I’ll go with the old daytona (116520 without ceramic bezel).

Nice review. And I enjoyed the added footage of the watchmaker removing the case backs and seeing the movements inside each model. Frankly you can't go wrong with either model, but I think I actually like the new ceramic black dial model. Even at $20,000 USD, it's still a lot money for these baby's. They are still selling over retail despite hard to find and almost as high as buying a new GMT Master two Pepsi.

Much prefer the non-ceramic model. Less blingey. The Daytona ceramic is a poor design. Unlike on the GMT and Sub where their respective ceramic rings are actual inserts that fit flush inside a steel bezel where the insert is protected on the outside edge by the steel bezel, the Daytona had a one piece integrated ceramic bezel. This exposes the ceramic's outside edge and make the watch extremely vulnerable to accidental impacts when worn on a daily basis. So yes, the ceramic is scratch resistant, but how often is a bezel face scratched? It's the edge that is fragile.
