First, there was the Rolex “Smurf” Ref. 116619. Now, there is the current production “Rolex Cookie Monster” Ref. 126619.
Ref. 116619 was the first white gold Submariner to sport a blue ceramic bezel. For the model, Rolex kept it cohesive and similar to other blue bezel Submariners by also making the dial blue to match the bezel. With its matte blue dial and sharp white Chromalight hour markers, collectors were quick to nickname ref. 116619, the “Smurf.”
The original model had all the usual Submariner specs, including a uni-directional bezel calibrated to 60 minutes, large Maxi hour markers, and a depth rating of up to 300 meters. It’s also worth noting that it has a 40mm case and the caliber 3135 Perpetual movement.
THE COOKIE MONSTER
In 2020, Rolex released a brand-new collection of Submariners and, in doing so, discontinued the Smurf. The new generation features slightly larger 41mm cases instead of 40mm and the integration to the newer caliber 3235 Perpetual movement. The shiny new movement had already been a fixture of the Rolex catalog, but 2020 was the first time it had been integrated into the Submariner line.
One of the new 2020 watches is the Rolex Cookie Monster. Like its predecessor, ref. 116619, it has a lustrous 18k white gold finish and a blue ceramic bezel. However, the dial is black instead of blue. The black and blue colorway earned the watch the nickname “Cookie Monster.”
The watch is deceiving in that it looks more understated than it is at first glance. In fact, for the uninitiated, it might first seem like a stainless steel Sub with a black dial and blue bezel. But it’s so much more than that.
First and foremost, the blue bezel is a reliable diver’s tool. The bezel is unidirectional to provide safer readings of diving times and decompression stops while in the water, and it has knurled edges for an easier grip while wearing dive gloves.
The Cerachrom material is incredibly resilient and won’t easily fade, corrode, or scratch when exposed to the elements. Furthermore, the 60-minute graduations are filled with platinum for high contrast.
The dial keeps it simple and clean for optimal legibility, displaying the time with sharp white Chromalight hour markers that glow bright blue for up to eight continuous hours in the dark.
The structure of the case, coupled with the Triplock screw-down crown with three sealed zones, offers standard dive watch water resistance of up to 300 meters. Rolex pairs the case with its classic 3-link Oyster bracelet and Glidelock clasp, which can be adjusted without tools to fit over the sleeve of a wetsuit.
Lastly is the newer movement. The caliber 3235 is afforded every amenity in the Rolex portfolio, including a more efficient Chronergy escapement, a Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring, and high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers. It boasts an impressive 70-hour power reserve.
