The Glashutte wins without a doubt. 100 hr., power reserve, display back, panorama (2-wheel) date. All the specs favor Glashutte. Size? I'm a pretty big guy, so I like the larger watch. But all that aside, I'd just LIKE to wear the Glashutte and show it--front and back--to friends or others who might be interested. I wouldn't even mention what it costs. It's just an interesting item and conversation piece. What's to show off about a Rolex Sub. Everybody's seen it. It has no special features. The only conversation would likely be to answer the questions: "Are you showing off?"/ "Why did you spend so much for a watch?"

I think the Sub is crazy anyway. Ok Rolex makes nice watches but even the retail price is way above what I would pay. It’s a steel watch with a simple movement and normal date function. The movement is not highly finished and the brand has no High Horology status as GO. And 15K for a sub Pepsi!???? I would take the money and get a nice 50 F instead. There are so many divers which beat the sub by far.

Actually I sold me SD43 and got the Glashütte SeaQ Panorama Datum as I really wanted to have something special and the higher end. Honestly, after having the Sub, Deepsea Blue and SD43 (even the Blancpain FF) I can tell you that this diver is the best you can find in the market. It’s insanely accurate, the case finish, the movement, the proportions... the amazing Panorama Datum is breathtaking...best decision ever

The GO impressed me. I've picked Rolex as winner in many of these comparisons, so I don't hold a grudge or bias against the brand. Germany vs. Switzerland. Germans invented the magnetic tape recorder in the Magnetophon. I happened to listen to a concert held in Berlin in 1944. It’s in full stereo with sound matching modern recordings. Germany invented the ballistic missile. Jet aircraft. Germany produced some of the finest classical composers. When the Swiss were making cuckoo clocks, Germans were creating stunning pocket watches. I own both Rolex and GO. The GO’s are better made with far more interesting designs. One positive aspect of Rolex is owning one is like keeping money in the bank. I never lost a dime selling a used Rolex. On one Submariner I had up for sale, I was shocked by how much a fellow was will to pay. Rolex has created a watch that is more a status symbol than a timepiece. Hardly anyone buying a Submariner dives with it. I know because I know professional divers. Many eschew a wristwatch altogether, instead using a digital combo depth gauge/timer. Those who do wear a dive watch use a Seiko.

Also in favor of German watchmaking, both Glashutte Original (communist-era GUB) and Lange had to rebuild from ruin or oblivion after the fall of the communist state. The Swiss never had to dig out from under 45 years of political oppression, inefficiency, and minimal access to luxury segment customers. I Go for the GO . But for that price i hope the markers and hands are gold like the Rolex . As a GO and Rolex owner i find myself liking GO a bit more because they are different , unique , and that panorama datum is awesome (something VC should not have removed on the Overseas ). 43 will be too big for some i must admit but understandable as bigger is better for SCUBA . But for a casual sport watch i would go for a GO 70s with panorama datum. Sadly people would go for the Rolex for an only luxury watch and collectors with money to burn would get the GO (and any other diver ) as a secondary

I too miss the late, great grande date Overseas. As much as I love the generation three version of the watch, losing the big date was a huge unforced error. That's the real reason why I recommend the "Self Winding" as the gem of the current line. The Gen 2 star easily was the chronograph. Best, Tim

Aside from the obvious tech upgrades, more refined case, much more attractive dial, better crystal up front (creating that edge distortion) minus cyclops, I have to agree with the majority of comments rolling in who prefer the challenger. One feature I think shoud be doubly highlighted is the Glashütte bracelet. While the sub is incredibly secure, and the GO is shown to be even more so, once again we're being shown a clasp that is much shorter and just as versatile. I have a 8 1/2 inch wrist and the sub clasp runs almost the entire width of my wrist. Not a huge deal, I get it, but I'd prefer more bracelet and less clasp, especially when security is just as robust in smaller dimensions.

I really like the GO, it has a lovely dial and love the big date, if manufacturers are going to put dates at the 4 o’clock position this is how you do it, not at some squinty angle. The Rolex just isn’t available in ADs so availability must come into it but it’ll be interesting to see if Rolex bring an update at 2020 Baselworld and whether it changes my mind, but I doubt it.

I rarely select a competing bracelet over a Rolex, but GO earned this nod. The solidity of the GO band matches the Rolex Oyster, but the sheer number of removable links and the push-button slider put the SeaQ bracelet over the top. Best, Tim

I went into this knowing I would otherwise rather either a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms for this price point (although I’d get an Omega Seamaster over all three). Between these two, however, the game was over the moment you turned the GO over. That movement is both noticeably better technically and absolutely stunning, compared to the Rolex. Also while I must admit I really can’t fall in love with the GO’s overall design (especially the dial layout, and I don’t love the case profile), I have a fairly deep seated dislike for Rolex’s cyclops date (and love a big date by comparison). Not to mention, I’m one of those people Tim mentioned that doesn’t particularly like the baggage that comes with Rolex as a brand. That being said, I have found myself preferring Rolex in comparisons on occasion before, however today isn’t one of those occasions.

WatchBox Reviews My problem is not actually with the size (although it could obviously be thinner when compared to a Sub), as I have flat 8in wrists, and i can’t really wear watches under 40-42mm unless they’re dress watches. My issues with its design are the dial layout, with its baton/numeral mix, and vintage inspired case profile, with the slim case band and bulging crystal and caseback. Both are entirely subjective on my part. I feel if the watch was 1.5-2mm thinner, the slim case flank would look less jarring, especially if they took it from the caseback (I really don’t like how it makes the lugs sit proud of the wrist). The dial is more subjective, and I feel it’s kind of growing on me, although I still prefer the simpler layout of a Sub or SM 300M. I personally feel that if you’re going to use both batons and numerals, the numerals should be quartered i.e. Panerai or Explorer I. Overall aesthetically I still prefer it to the Sub, as I’ve never liked Rolex’s cyclops date (it’s hideous and lazy design), and I’m a sucker for a good movement (this is probably the single most beautiful dive watch movement I’ve seen). Edit: I just saw the SeaQ under the more natural lighting of the studio on Weekend Watches. It looked so much better that I think the Fifty Fathoms 5515 has serious competition for my favourite luxury dive watch.

Geoffrey Pearce I juts bought my first Glashütte SeaQ Panorama Datum (I bought this one over the Blancpain FF) and actually sold my Rolex SD43 and replaced with this one... it’s amazing in person and the Panorama Datum is just breathtaking. I love the dial and of course, the movement... finally I can see the heart of my watch and what a gorgeous movement. It’s something that you appreciated and ask yourself- why did I bought Rolex before -

There is one thing you need to know, though. The SeaQ on the steel bracelet is beautiful and the steel bracelet is great to wear on your arm. The quick-to-use fine adjustment offers around 1cm of leeway, which is more than enough to accommodate a changing circumference over the course of a day or a week. But over a diving suit, this centimeter is not enough to compensate for the change in circumference from an arm without clothing to a neoprene one. If you want to do that, you should buy the textile bracelet in addition to the steel bracelet. It doesn't cost much more.

Another excellent review! After 20+ years, I decided last year that I simply must have a Rolex Sub in my collection. I got one, and I owned it less than a month. Now, I am a Rolex fan and have had quite a few different models. But I simply got bored with the Sub. I sold it in less than a month, and the next day I bought an Oris Divers 65, the model with the funky font and rivet bracelet. I still have it, after almost a year. The only thing that has come along since then in terms of a dive watch, is the GO. I would take this one with the Panorama date any day over the Rolex. However, my big love is the 39.5mm SeaQ. Not a spectacular movement like the Panorama, but I love solid case backs and the SeaQ 39.5mm has that. Anyway, your comparison does not include that one, so I will say GO over Rolex. I love that adjustable clasp also. I found the Glidelock on the Rolex simply to be awkward. And I have read that they also test the GO to a depth of over 300M, although I am sure Rolex does that too. If I have a choice between two dive watches that perform the same, I will gladly take the one that is more aesthetically pleasing any day. Thank you!

carlhaluss I had the same situation, actually had many Rolex sport models but at least here in Basel, you will see a Rolex everywhere and in the end, it doesn’t feel any special anymore. The submariner became boring just after few days, the Deepsea Blue (amazing dial tho) but too heavy and grossly tall) and the SD43 juts felt weird with the cyclops and just like a oversized submariner... I was close to the get the Blancpain FF (titanium blue dial as I wanted to be able to see the movement) and the Audemars Piguet diver but once I saw the Glashütte SeaQ Panorama Datum, I knew it was the high end diver I was looking for ... it’s a amazing piece - the quality is what you can expect from a higher end watchmaker and it has this special and unique factor which I was looking for ... I can honestly say- it’s by far the best diver (to me) available in the market, even than the Blancpain FF

Time & Tide just released its ranking of the top 5 new dive watches of 2019. Interestingly, the Glashütte Original did NOT make the cut. On Chrono 24, Sea Qs are already selling at an a 20% discount from retail. Don’t scream at or troll me....I’m just reporting facts. And FYI...I own neither of these watches although I’ve seen both and have owned G.O., Omega, UTS and Rolex steel divers over the years.

This GO is Gorgeous. Just wish it was 42mm and a bit slimmer. My wrist can comfortably support up to about 45mm or so but something this elegant should be a bit more compact in my opinion. I know there’s a 39mm version but for me that’s a bit too small for a diver plus half the fun of this watch is the display back showcasing that beautiful hand finished movement.

Why? I hate this domed sapphire. It distorts the numbers, it makes them look like cartoon numbers. This is the most important thing not to buy this watch. It would really irritate me.

I have the sub two tone and bought the two-tone Sea Q Panorama date so having both, I find the Glashutte is far more legible and the case is FAR more polished than the case of the sub. It's noticeable when the sun flashes off it and calls attention to the flanks. I have the fabric strap vs the bracelet. The 'face' of the watch does appear FAR larger by the doming of the sapphire crystal. The pip of the second hand is higher on the hand to avoid obscuring the date and at night makes it harder to get an accurate second count. Now, I have an 8.5" wrist (21.5 cm) so I prefer the larger case size of the Glashutte.

How can you say lug to lug is about the same, at 9.45 I see a difference of maybe a few mm’s, it looks almost half a centimeter. The bezel diameter is also quite larger, the case much thicker. All meaning less comfortable and heavier. For me it would be the Rolex.

I tried on the Glashutte the other day and was MASSIVELY disappointed! Felt towered near as classy or luxury as the Sub. Firstly, the dimensions are terrible - it's WAY too thick and and big. The bracelet is terrible as well - way to thick and no taper...it also felt cheap and rattled, nowhere near as good as the Oyster. The bezel as well was one of the worst I've ever felt on ANY dive watch - worse than most homage watches and again, nothing like the satisfying quality sound on the Sub. To top it off, the movement is not as accurate as in the Sub either! 😂

That depends on your preference. Personally, I find the weight absolutely pleasant. I have the SeaQ Pano and the Seventies. I had an Omega Aqua Terra 41 for a while and recently held the watch in my hand at a friend's house. To be honest, this watch is too light for me. It feels strange. And it should also be mentioned that divers in general seem to be a bit heavier. The Omega Seamaster Diver 300 weighs 194 grams. That's normal. Anyway. You have to give it a try. There is no other way. But what I can tell you is that the SeaQ's steel bracelet is incredibly comfortable to wear.

I'd consider a Rolex Sub if I could get it for a steep discount, as these are watches produced in the millions every year. The GO, I would doubt they are even a fraction of that number produced.

not at all. Apple actually moves industry forward AND they over and over have the most performing products. I am not Apple owner, btw, I have a Pixel XL, which I like, but Google is WAY behind on their phones (except the camera) than Apple.

The Sub appeals to more people because to the “flippable” factor. The majority of the Sub will be flipped for a profit. To me there really is nothing special about the Sub. Don’t get me wrong I love the look of the Sub and I am currently and patiently waiting for a Hulk to come up at an AD so I can jump on it...I know wishful thinking. The German watch is better and the Sub is showing its age with the comparison. You really can’t go wrong with either I just can’t afford neither atm.

There's no real debate, the GO is a high horology. The Rolex whilst fabulous is just not in the same league. I have both, I wear the GO as a daily for everything on the provided strap not the bracelet. I keep the sub in the safe for rainy day money. on the subject of lume and accuracy. The GO shines all night 8 hours plus no problem. The Sub does not. The accuracy. My GO is now 12 months old and worn everyday, its less than a second fast each 24 hours. I do not even notice this watch on my wrist, the fit is gorgously comfortable. Its the way to go and steallthy too

I tried on the Glashutte the other day and was MASSIVELY disappointed! Felt towered near as classy or luxury as the Sub. Firstly, the dimensions are terrible - it's WAY too thick and and big. The bracelet is terrible as well - way to thick and no taper...it also felt cheap and rattled, nowhere near as good as the Oyster. The bezel as well was one of the worst I've ever felt on ANY dive watch - worse than most homage watches and again, nothing like the satisfying quality sound on the Sub. To top it off, the movement is not as accurate as in the Sub either! 😂

It's just that people's egos, and the show-off, are there, connoisseurs know which one to buy...the GO is two notches above ! It is not industrial with much more handwork, and above all, available. No doubt one of the best divers out there, at Blancpain's level but with more refinement (and the bezel has no play).

Just the movement alone of the GO is woth more that this Rolex. In other words: GO is handmade "haute horlogerie" whereas Rolex is a overpriced inustrial produced mass-market product.

Finally made the decision to get the SeaQ because Rolex games are total bullshit. And it isn't even a compromise because the bullshit Rolex games had inadvertently created time for me to consider what I truly like, and at the end of the day the SeaQ won my heart.

An impressive movement on the GO, both technically and visually. But that display back likely contributes considerably to an over 3mm thicker watch as compared to the Rolex. Just too chunky.

With sapphire caseback it seems impossible. The 39mm SeaQ with solid caseback is like the Rolex 12 thick.

“SeaQ” for a German is very close to “Seekuh” (manatee) and we are talking a diver. Apart from that I’d prefer the GO if I ever wore sports watches.

Well I'm going to be different here. The rolex is the nicer watch. The glashutte is beautifully made can't deny that, but that hand set really bugs me . The hour hand would look nicer with the arrow head , just hate the fact they have put it on the minute hand. Yes I know they did this with vintage watches but it just doesn't look great in my opinion. Some people don't like the rolex with the maxi case and maxi dial, but I think rolex have dropped a big one getting rid or it. The hulk with maxi dial is the best looking sub ever and the batman a close second. Prices for both these models are going through the roof , and will only get higher as they get rarer. Buy the glashutte and your money won't double that's for sure. That vintage styling will be yesterday's news and you will be lucky to sell it half price at best in the future. Buy what you like by all means but my money's on the rolex all day long !!!

Thanks for showing, Tim. I always had a sweet spot for the Sports Evolution Series. It‘s good, that GO brought a sports watch back in the line up but it‘s bad that it looks like the GDR Divers watches from the 80s....I would try to find the vintage version for 5 percent of the prize of this thing. It won‘t look cheaper on the wrist.

I also enjoyed the Sport Evos. But the case design of the SeaQ is far more attractive, and the caliber 36 in the Panorama Date is a huge upgrade. I wasn't a big fan of the Sport Evo Impact series, and the SeaQ is more attractive than all versions of that line. Regarding older and cheaper GDR watches, there's always a tradeoff between price and quality; the two are proportional. Best, Tim

Rolex sub for me. Great challenger watch, but prefer the less thick sub, nicer bezel, price, and brushed steel center links of the sub. I’d definitely go with green bezel option though for the character.
