I looked up "how to design a roll cage" and got 5 results on how to build/fabricate roll cages before this! Sad this doesn't get more attention - understanding what makes the most effective roll cages should be the first thing people think about before choosing, or especially designing their own roll-cages. Thank you for the sick data and for showing your simulations. A1 job with the fabrication, too. Bet that S2K feels like no other around corners.

Thank you for taking the time to go through all of the information!! I have a build that I would love to share with you and get your professional input on, if you are interested. It is a F1-based design, mid-engine/rwd with an enclosed cockpit and a total height, including ground clearance of 40" to 41". I am using 1.625"x.120" Mild steel DOM and it is a tube frame chassis. Let me know. Thanks in advance!

I love the content and the simulations. I am currently working on a video for stage rally rollcage designs based on FIA 253-8 but I'd like to run similar deformation testing with various designs like you did for your cage to illustrate the differences. Did you make your Solidworks model available or are the results of your simulations available to download somewhere?

I have emailed my excel sheet to a few people but that's a good idea. I will put it on my website as a free download. Thanks!

I realize you did this video came out several years ago. Any hind sights you can share? Would Tocos on the door X-brace help? Why not use the FIA bars, they seem to help? I'm starting to plan my cage SCCA/NASA and your video helps.

I am not sure about the tacos. I don't think much. FIA bars help but its also more weight and I was already happy with the crush performance without them. If I was going to add more weight I wanted it to also contribute to the overall chassis stiffness. Thats why I did the bars to the front strut towers. it improve the side impact and increased overall torsional. plust those bars all act as an anti-intrusion if the wheel were to be pushed into the cabin. If I were to do it over again I'd probably figure out how to do the V-Bar set up and keep the door bars the same.

If you are willing to share the design matrix I'd definitely be interested in taking a look. Going to be putting a cage into a new chassis soon.

amazing man! If you don't mind me asking, what were the reasons for selecting that load values? I am studying mechanical engineering and I am doing this kind of simulations, but I could not find any information of FIA standards for load tests, so, I will appreciate a lot if you could tell me what parameters do you take into account.

Hey Brook! Thanks for this, there's some great info here. If you were serious about that offer of sharing your Excel sheet, I'd like to take you up on that. I'm looking to design a cage for an historic van so it'll need to be bespoke and your sheet could really help me I think.

Best roll cage video on youtube. I’m curious your opinion on modifing Cage9 V-Bar to make headroom. What if you moved the roof-V inward. Maybe move each side 3.5-4.5” closer to rear view mirror. Then 5-6” tube-guesset top corners of windshield area (Cage6 had tube-gussets on top and side but not front at windshield). As a bonus, the top corners of windshield area are triangulated. WIth a narrower roof-V the bar are shorter therefore lighter. That weight goes to tube-gussets. Then optional FIA bar can be placed on other end of tube-gusset. Which makes FIA bar much shorter, more vertical and less parallel/more triangulated relative to front bar dash area bend. Also what’s your opinion on anti-intrusion bars (anti-front wheel swinging back instruction bars)? You showed bars going to front struts helped a lot. But do you think anti-intrusion bars would give 50-80% of the same results without penetrated the firewall?
@brookhammerschmidt44643 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think your idea about modifying the V-bar might be ok with the tube gussets. Tough to say for sure with out running the simulations but sounds like a good idea. Anti-intrusion bars are good and would help with the side load. they just wouldn't help stiffen up the strut towers. The s2000 chassis doesn't really need anti-intrusion bars just because of the shape of it. I would just gusset the A-piller down bar if I wasn't allowed or didn't want to run bars to the front struts.

I’m 80% done with my cage. Was planning V-bar with modifications described above. But now i’m second guessing..

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the raw materials cost? Looking to design a cage for a future Integra project and just looking for some information.

If you measure out how much tube you need then you can look online for a price per foot in the size you want. I think mine was about 1300. 4130 is more expensive.

There is a book, Automotive Body Structure Design, that teaches basic chassis design. If you are in engineering school, join a design team like Human powered vehicles or formula! If they don't have one start one!
