Not sure on your familiarity with D&D in general so forgive me if I'm being way too over-simplistic with my definitions here. In D&D there are magic spells of different levels, and most of them a player is able to cast a limited number of times in a given period of time. Cantrips however are comparably simple and lower powered spells that don't have a level to them, thus you can cast them an unlimited number of times. What that means for Jake's situation on RFS is that he can use cantrips whenever he wants, to invoke a more minor effect on the normally unchanging format (roll the dice, use the ingredient as provided) of his sandwich building. Toast Bread is probably the most commonly used of his cantrips. He has other cantrips and spells in his 'spellbook', but they don't come up nearly as frequently. Hope that contained the explanation you were looking for! :)
