Expansion is great, it really enhances the game. :) One minor thing about the review, Tom didn’t mention an important rule about the Location/Obstacle/Attack cards for the main boss, namely if you haven’t earned the corresponding trophy you do not get the benefit of that card when yu fight the boss. So if you haven’t gotten the Location trophy then you won’t get the Location benefit when you fight the boss. This is particularly important because the Location reward is the weakest (one die usually), the Obstacle is better (two dice) and the Attack is the best (three dice) and you get those trophies in that exact order. So there is a big difference at the end fight between have no trophies, one trophy, two or three trophies, it’s a real incentive to fight the minions to get those trophies.

One of my favorite games of all time and I am SO excited for the Fiends and Familiars Expansion, which is currently on Kickstarter. I wrote the backstory card "Celestial", which has been accepted as one of the additional cards that will be added to the expansion.

The game is great. Plays well solo which is why I picked up the base game at first. Now, My fiancée likes this game as well and is playing lots of games with me so my solo games have been sparse (and that's not a bad thing). I think this is one of her favorite games in my collection.

I agree, this expansion makes the game far more enjoyable overall and makes it feel more complete. I wonder if Keith is going to put out an adventure or campaign set of rules later on (or if they already exist). I took the extra step and picked up a playmat as well. Roll Player is one of my favorite games overall and this expansion is definitely a best of 2018! Thanks for the review, Tom! Oh, and the game is better with metal coins as well :)

Dammit, I wish I kept this game. I loved it, but I would AP hard on this one while playing with others, and I don't know why. May just pick it up again with expac, to play it solo, which I loved(and miss)

Yeah, I think math people will love this game... I certainly do. My wife though prefers games with only a few choices, so if she played this she would AP hard.

They did not! The kickstarter sold metal coins separately, and included the Frogkin promo (which is a general promo and not Kickstarter exclusive), but everything that was unlocked by the Kickstarter itself was included in the retail box.

@@ArmadilloAl This will remain true for its next expansion, Fiends and Familiars, which will provide all of the unlocked stretch goals in the retail edition once the second expansion is released. Also, you can buy the metal coins, the Frogkin promo, the playmat, and the organizer insert from the Thunderworks Games website if you want any of these items. i highly recommend the playmat for making the game much easier to set up, and the insert is great for keeping everything organized.

Very good game, especially appreciated from us with an RPG-background. Honestly, one negative I'd add is that - thematically speaking - fighting the minions during your character building makes absolutely no sense in my opinion (fighting the boss after having your character is great of course). That being said, the mechanism totally adds to the options you can have during your turn, makin ita very fun addition to the base game. All in all, liked it a lot and so did my girlfriend (fiou, because I'd be bumped if I had to trade it away..)

You could look at it like the character is training to become the character they are destined to be, and they have to kill some minions to become that legend.

In every RPG style game, you hunt to gain experience and skill. They are trials to come along with your training. You don't just throw you adventurer against a Giant Troll without testing out his training first, do you? He might even learn something new while fighting these minions. The theme is very fitting, and standard for every RPG known to mankind. Link didn't just go straight to Ganon's palace. He fought many things along the way, honing his skills, and finding new items to support his quest. Then he delved into the final palace. The L O A tokens represent this sort of learning. It makes a lot of sense. Familiarizing yourself with foes similar to the boss really enhance your chances. This expansion does a great job of representing such an integral part of training. Fight a Gnoll on your way to the Troll? You learn about a similar technique they use, and earn an extra die or two for being exposed to this.

Listen, please tell publishers they are just plain NOT making enough stock. Please tell Cool Stuff they aren't stocking enough! Things are going out of stock way too fast. My purchasing of games has greatly fallen off because games and expansions are becoming increasingly difficult to buy.

Publishers have to be VERY careful when printing, because printing too much stock is WAY worse than printing too little. I'm sure more will come back in stock.
