This classic AoE2 scenario is now available for Definitive Edition! Units are randomly selected for players as they battle to defend their outpost. Despite the constantly changing battlefield and randomness of the units, veteran players attest it's really 10% luck and 90% skill. Let's try it out!

Hey Spirit here's what I understand of the scenario, I played it quite a bit back in HD: Wood: Represents your kill-score. Getting a kill increases it by 1. Unlocks different powers at certain scores (early in the game it increases your outpost's health, late in the game it gives you the bonus green has, where your unit constantly gets more HP and attack with which you can win the game) Gold: 1 per kill, get a trade cart whenever you have 5 or more gold Food: Used in the food shop; can be exchanged 30f for 3w (allowing you to get powers faster) or 3g (trade cart) or the golden dice; I think it's 1 food per kill, but I could be wrong. Stone: Represents your current kill-streak. The villagers at the top of the screen allow you to pick a killstreak bonus, either wood, food or gold when you reach a certain number of kills without dying. Harder killstreaks give exponentially greater rewards. You had trouble in the store because you didn't get the Castle box upgrade. Notice the age everyone's in at the scores to see which boxes were purchased; Teal and yellow had all boxes and were in Imperial, you only had the feudal box so you're in feudal. Apparently no one else got these boxes. They improve the non-hero units you randomly get; notice how yellow and teal got siege rams, but the rest got battering rams, for instance. When you have all boxes and all blacksmith upgrades, you can buy the final power for 3 carts, which increases your units' attack over time.

The mystery of the battle event symbol is partially unraveled here. There seems to be a maximum of three battles per player displayed and they are the first three to reach the threshold. The battle event for the player seems to be different to the event for the opponents as spirit isn't seen to have any battle events here even though it would make sense that he would if the requirements were the same.

it wasn’t the middle which pumped up greens attack, it’s one of the upgrades you buy with carts. Ultimately you should aim to get this upgrade in every game asap

OMG I love this custom scenario, thank you so much for the exposure on KZbin! The gameplay itself is really interesting but the main issue is that games usually take ages to start because only a few select players are interested in playing or know how to play this map, and new players have quite a number of things they have to learn. I don't have DE unfortunately but I can give you tips on the general strats on voobly. Here is a guide, although it may look a little intimidating at first www.voobly.com/forum/thread/113146 Concerning the game play itself, the main tip I have to give is to not hoard panics. There are 3 power spikes in the game. Final power, ultimate power, and mega power. Final power is given once you get certain upgrades, ultimate power is given at 125 wood, while mega is given at 250 wood. If you take a look at the guide you can find the upgrades that are needed to get final highlighted in red. Final Power (+4HP | +1AP / 5 sec) Ultimate Power (+1 AP / +3 HP per second) Mega Power (+5 AP / +15 HP per second) The most common strat is to get final power as fast as possible so you can get kills easier. Kills reward you with +1 of every resource, +1 wood, +food, +1gold, +1stone. With wood you can get to ultimate power and mega power respectively, but there are also check points like at 10 wood where you get rewards, here is a list of all the check points: 10: 5 Gold and 10 Food 20: +750 HP 25: 1 Gold/min and 20 Food 30: 5 Gold 40: +750 HP 50: 10 Gold 75: +1000 HP 100: +1000 HP and 10 Gold 125: Ultimate Power (+1 AP / +3 HP per second) 250: Mega Power (+5 AP / +15 HP per second) 300: 100 Food And 10 Free Rerolls 10 wood = 1 power, so you can check the outpost tower to know where a player is until about 110 wood. After you hit power 10 it doesn't update to power 11 or power 12, once it updates to ultimate power the power level is replaced with ???? indicating a player hit ultimate power. The power symbol doesn't change once a player hits mega power, but there is a noise and a notification !WTF message indicating someone hit mega. You would have to click on a player's unit and see how quickly it's gaining stats to figure out who is mega power (it's pretty easy to tell since they power up 5x as much per second compared to ultimate). Most games end before anyone hits mega power, but the only way to beat a mega player is pretty much through sniping them. In some cases you may need to snipe a player who gets ultimate before anyone else is close to ultimate, a player at ultimate will be able to 1v7 if he has too many carts. Snipers: You can target a specific player's outpost for a high amount of damage, the standard being 1k-5k (2k has more chances to happen the 5k damage so don't be surprised to see 2k and 3k damage most of the time). The lowest roll as far as I am aware is 500 damage, and the highest can be as crazy as 90k (the chance for 90k is far less than 1%)! A way to protect yourself from this is buying 90% damage resistance. 90% damage resistance multiplies your tower hp by 10 for 3 in game minutes, so you can go from 2k outpost hp to 20k outpost hp. Naturally a sniper is wasted if you snipe during this period of time as 2k sniper damage results in 200 damage once the resistance wears off. As long as the number is in the 10 thousands you shouldn't have to worry about a sniper killing you and someone attempting to snipe you would have to wait until it wears off. You want to keep a close eye on the sniper selection area if you expect you are at a big lead to where a use of the sniper is necessary. Ctrl group your carts near the resistance area and if you see a sniper moving to the your flag, try to react at the last possible moment so they waste a sniper. If you gain a huge lead and have 10 carts however, of course play it safe and use resistance! Snipers in a standard game costs 7 carts while resistance costs 3 carts, therefore if you're ultimate if you manage to gain 15 (3 carts) within 3 mins, you should be able to constantly buy resistance until you can remove the player with the sniper. At the food store you can speed up the amount of time of damage resistance by buying Accelerator (costs 125 food and you must have reached 50 wood to use it) to allow for a quick snipe to get through. Stone is kind of confusing though, it's the only resource that isn't constant. Instead all civs (except Koreans) exchange a set amount of stone, these deals are called kill contracts. If your unit dies before a kill contract is fulfilled, your stone count is reset to 0 so it's important to not get greedy. The standard contract for all players is 5 stone = 2 wood, but you can change it to 7 stone = 4 wood, or 10 stone = 8 wood. You can also exchange 7 stone for +300 outpost hp (essentially what 1 cart can buy) or 7 stone = 2 gold, or 10 stone = 4 gold. There are 2 others but I can't remember exactly what they do as I haven't played in months, but they are not really significant. I think there might be 7 kills = 25 food (1 cart can buy 25 food at the store) which is useful, but I personally never used it. I don't have much time so I will end the comment here, but I will edit this comment later to include more info. Feel free to ask questions!

For the four upgrades on the bottom, you have to get them in order from right to left, that is, you have to get the rightmost one (“feudal box”) first. They improve the units your dice roll. This is why during the rams session, one player had siege ram while you guys had battering rams.

@@00WhiteBlade Another very important thing: be wary of lobbies full of "noobs Only" games. a lot of these games are very experienced players pretending they're noobs, many of them have 2 accounts and just want easy wins or to troll real noobs. When joining a match you can usually check the Rank of the players in it, if it's above 1400 it's better to find another lobby.

Both get a speed boost in this scenario. I found out afterward by looking at the triggers that Aztecs are +10% and Celts are +15% infantry speed. Japanese have +10% speed as well, so it worked out.

There's some overlap in bonuses to make every civ more equal. I found out afterward that every Infantry civ gets a speed boost to infantry. Cavalry civs all get stat buffs to cavalry etc.

Dear Spirit of the Law, You teached me and thousands others important details about the game, and i want to thank you for that. Now i have a question regarding dark Age food gathering. Lately i started watching some of the top AoE2 Players, Namely hera, Viper and such more. And i notice that each and every of them gather food from mutiple animals at once, like 2x2 gather from deer, 3 gather from a sheep and 5 from a boar and such more. Can you explain what possible benefit that might have? after all such ELO Legends must have a reason right? Sincerly Isegrimm
