I have been a great supporter of Nelson Antennas and have recommended them to lots of my UK preppers friends. Great product and very reliable.

You said the slim Jim can be used for base station? I also know Nelson makes a slim Jim for GMRS radios . I’m wanting to make a permanent base station using the midland MXT115 radios. How would it work I don’t own the property I live on so I can’t alter much . So far the 16’ slim Jim seems to be a good option. How would I go about setting it up on a pole etc? My other idea is to use a GMRS mobile antenna. On a metal pole . Setting up a regular base antenna also makes it rough in my spot because of Hieght and power lines
@NTCReviews3 жыл бұрын
Hello Steveder, I've used this antenna hanging from a nail, hanging from a branch and even from a clothes-line at camp... It has never let me down. I can't speak for the GMRS, only for the Ham bands. -Hg

Had mine for over a year now and been happy with it. I own the deluxe and regular one. I use kevlar rope (1.5mm diameter and 250# break point 100 Feet) and a one ounce fishing weight and toss it into a tree branch then bring up the antenna. "Height is might!"

I just pick this radio up. I'm working on my ticket. I'm playing with the radio now, I get repeaters 10 to 15 miles away. If you have time can you make a video on storing channels. Thanks for the great reviews, love the channel.
@NTCReviews7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Bano, I appreciate the support! There are a few key videos on storing channels both manually and via software like Chirp on KZbin. I will search a bit and If I feel the other videos could be improved, I will definitely invest the time. I have another channel where I focus on reviewing outdoor & survival gear including emergency Comm. If you are interested, the channel is located here: kzbin.info Thank you for commenting and the kind words. Good luck on your ticket and 73, my friend! -Hg

Dumb question for you. Do you know if our radio is compatible with the peltor camtac 3? I can't find anything online or on the tube. Thanks
@NTCReviews7 жыл бұрын
I do not have any direct experience with that Peltor unit. But in theory, bluetooth is bluetooth. If you have the bluetooth module for the VX8DR radio and your Peltor unit also has bluetooth capability, then there should be no issue if they are paired correctly. Once again, keep in mind that the battery will drain much faster with the bluetooth activated. I hope that helps a bit, Bano. -Hg

Bano, please be aware that each time you key your mic (press the PTT button), even if just trying to hit repeaters, you are required by the FCC to announce your callsign. So, obtain your license and blab away without fear of the ham community direction-finding you and ratting you out to the FCC.

Good review Coach, and thank you for your service. I have a slim Jim also, but haven't tried it out yet. You've given me the itch to go out side and haul it up a tree with some bankline. I'll see if I can hit some repeaters that have been out of reach heretofore. 73's, my friend. AA8VA

I had a Question on the setup for this antenna. Could I use an old aluminum tape measure and use that to support the antenna much like the folding military antennas used by the troops today, or would the measuring tape interfere with the reception?

How do you like it? I'm hoping to get a new radio sometime soon. I'm torn between the Icom ID-51a Plus or the Yaesu.
@NTCReviews8 жыл бұрын
+Justin D I have had the VX-8DR for a little over 3 years. I have a "rugged" lifestyle and have really put it through it's paces. I use it in my Jeep, in the home and of course, when portable which is the majority of the time. I enjoy the APRS feature but I also had to buy the external GPS unit for it to work adding to the cost. Buying all of the accessories, extra batteries, battery eliminator, external mic, various antennas, adapters, cables.. So make sure you compare cost on all of the items that you need before making a final decision. The cost in no joke for either choice.. I have not used the Icom ID-51a but it's Icom! You cannot go wrong. I have not used DSTAR but will explore it a bit more in the future. I am continually being sent equipment to review and test. I will hopefully have some reviews relating to DSTAR and it's Emergency uses soon. Let me know what you choose. I'm sure that you will be happy either way. I have a "Reviews-Only" channel on here and I will keep adding HAM videos to that channel. I currently have (3) yaesu videos on this channel if you are interested, stay posted: kzbin.info/door/-2j5ihT2ohmr_Vm0xbSbVA If you choose the VX-8DR, I am here to help if you need me. Good Luck and have a great day; 73! -Hg (W2NTC)

Slim Jim is a great dual band antenna. I wouldn't say TV twin lead is the "highest quality". It could have been made with ladder line for higher wattage. But, the antenna is good, and your demonstration is good, but you said "UM" 95 times. Might want to reel that in before the next job interview. 73!
