I honestly think Xrd had a better graphic approach than Strive. I mean, it was more colorful and vivid, the animations had a more intense feel, even though they didn't have that Mappa-style frame count in them. It felt less 3D too, even though it is.

Whilst I agree that Xrd combos look AWSOME. I also find combos cool when the fighting game doesn’t naturally allow for things to chain into each other easily. Examples of this include those insane street fighter 3rd strike combos and the king of the dandy, slayer.

You will still get more players in Strive, since it also still getting support. But in my opinion, xrd is the greatest and funnest Guilty Gear games, and you hardly get bored of it.

I tried it out a few years ago, I didn't stick with it cause it was a lot more complicated than I thought. It was fun learning a little bit though. And this isn't to say Strive is better, cause that game has it's own issues. Edit: In addition to being complicated, I could never get a match cause nobody played in any lobby I joined, and I stopped playing with the person that taught me about the game, so it was pretty much just playing against AI in arcade mode only, if struggling with combos and trials wasn't enough already.
