@Adam Smith the reason flat track is so popular isn't a matter of skill, it's more related to the expenses and time needed to acquire and/or build a banked track. Most leagues rent or share public buildings for practices, games, etc. so they would have to arrive at practice 3+ hours early to set up the track and then stay late to take it down. I've got nothing but respect for the banked leagues that are making it work, but there is still a validity in flat track that surpasses your opinions on what constitutes athletic ability

no, even if race is a part of it. There are 2 teams, and every team have 1 jammer (you can reconize by the star on the helmet) that score points by running, but there are also the defence etc. Search "roller derby rules" and there are better explanations

Jammer (star helmet) has to skate through the pack (plain helmets) and then every time after the first lap they get points for passing each opponent

It’s a but complicated, but it’s kinda like a race. The jammers (the ones with the stars on their helmets) try to get around the track as much as possible, and the blockers (other skaters) try to stop them, while also helping their own jammer.
