I just read on the Internet that Dave Eddy died February 13, 2022. He was a terrific announcer and a very nice man. My condolences to his family.

Saw my first Roller Derby game on TV in 1958. Was sorry to see it deteriorate to the level of pro wrestling with manufactured story lines. Thanks for the video, Tom.

Wow. 1958. Loved those vintage games. Good to hear from you, Duane!

I remember when James Paul was a rookie starting out on the SF Bay Bombers and was happy to see his progress through the IRSL years with him leading his own teams. When the prior IRDL was in existence, I always wished that he was on "my" Midwest Pioneers. A very talented skater and exciting to watch.

Thanks so much for sharing your story. I also watched him when he was a rookie on the Bombers. He was a terrific skater. I met him at Joan Weston’s training center in Hayward years later. He was not only a great skater, but a very good guy. 😀

You are correct in stating that this was the last game the IRSL skated. :(

Odd seeing Joan Weston with that number on her uniform. Thanks for posting.

They allowed Joan Weston and Bill Groll from the Bay Bombers to skate with the Eastern Express. Also, they added Diane Syverson and Sean Atkinson, from the Southern Stars, to the Midwest Pioneers lineup.

I NEVER UNDERSTAND JOAN LEAVING OR BEING MOVED OFF THE BAY BOMBERS PERIOD. IT HAD TO BE THE ARGUMENTS I HEARD FROM OTHER SKATERS THAT CHARLIE AND JOAN HAD IN LATER YEARS. CHARLIE WOULD NOT EVEN SIGN AUTOGRAPHS FOR FANS JUST A NASTY PERSON.

@@NYRNGR1 I NEVER LIKED WHEN ROLLER DERBY DID THAT WITH ITS PLAYERS IT MADE DERBY LOOK FAKE.

The coach co-announcer sounds like a wrestling heel!

You're speaking of Bill Hill! He was a lot of fun to work with as was Dave Eddy. He was also very supportive and gave me some good advice which I appreciated as it was my first time.

A very AVERAGE skater who the derby desperately tried to get over as a heel. One of the worst. No charisma, no character--basically all hat and no cowboy.

I never saw this footage.... Never saw Groll or Weston skate for the Xpress. Very cool indeed. The only thing is the game skipped around... I didn't like that. Seems like we missed stuff.

JAMES PAUL WAS NEVER ANYTHING OTHER THAT A THIRD STRINGER. THEN WHEN MOST OF THE ORIGINAL TOP SKATERS RETIRED AFTER 1983. HES NOT EVEN A GOOD ANNOUNCER.

@@spectrumlocalb191 I thought you were talking about the announcer, Dave Eddy. Regarding James Paul, I thought he was a very good skater and very underrated.
