I cant thank you enough, Mark, for bringing this back into our lives! The passion returns just as it was so many years ago! What a great sport! I miss it so much!

Not really fighting - theatrics for the most part. To play to the crowd. If you watch closely very little closed fist activity. But yes sometimes they connected. Sometimes they would just tap somebody and the person would fall down. Everything was planned out for the most part. If you watch all these games you’ll never see any blood. And skaters got back up for the most part And continued the game. However they were in very good athletic shape and skated very very well. I used to go see them at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Very entertaining

that's amazing! Can someone explain to me whether they acted wrestling-style or they fought genuinely?

Not always. Sometimes people just really got pissed off.

Sadly this was when Roller Derby went south & began to react like their competitor @ the time Roller Games. As much as Bob Woodberry & Charlie O'Connell despised each other, I don't believe those blows connected. Now Ken Monte & not on skates not so certain. He was never a great friend of Charlie O'Connell either!

This season (1973) was different than other seasons, as there seemed to be a conscious effort to make the game rougher. More fighting, mixed match races (Woodberry vs. Laszlo), and I think referee Bill Morrisey did a "crooked referee" angle. That December was when Jerry Seltzer closed the Derby down...

andyr1313 The oil crisis brought an end to this really great night out thing called Roller Derby.

Sadly have to agree. Derby sort of became more Games with similar theatrics. Don't know why not needed @ all! Wasn't just the gasoline shortage too. Remember attempt by a few Skaters to unionize. Seltzer himself going through a divorce as well. A lot of other behind the scenes too I can only imagine. I doubt if it was only one thing. IMHO, Jerry Seltzer & his family simply lost interest in continuing to continue it & profit margin low

This is stupid. Just fighting not even playing the game
