So many tricks, slides, and fun stuff you can learn with inline skates/rollerblades. Higher end inlines also have a ton of configurations you can make by changing wheel sizes and frames, so you can turn your skates into so many different things (attach an ice skate blade, 3 big wheels for trails, rockered wheels for slalom/dance). Maybe I'll try quads some day but for now I am in love with mine!

I’ve been a skier since I was 3 years old and even though I haven’t done much of either, I’ve always found that rollerblades were MUCH easier than roller skates for me. I was able to pick up rollerblading right away with a fast learning curve and retain my ability after years of not touching skates, but I’ve tried roller skating multiple times for hours at a time and with little time in between sessions and still I have yet to find my balance on them. I think the way skiers and rollerbladers engage their ankles and core strength and balance are very similar and I assume it’s the same thing with ice skaters so if you do either of those, rollerblading may actually be easier for you.

@pepperspikes18494 жыл бұрын
i don’t have blades yet but i have to say quads can give you a pretty good workout too depending on what you do with them. practicing certain skills repeatedly (esp with few breaks) can definitely get me out of breath, and also i would argue that because blades are faster and have smaller contact points with the ground, quads actually work you out more when pushing over paths with debris and/or for long distances. i definitely get out of breath on quads going on trails with debris, even with outdoor wheels. another important point imo is that quads can be easily adapted to different disciplines just by changing the wheels, so there’s a lot less commitment to one type of skating in that regard. you could get a different set of wheels and pretty much be all good to go if you want to get into a new type of skating (park skating, jam/dance skating, etc.), whereas with inlines you often need removable frames to be able to switch things up, and you won’t find recreational inlines with removable frames (though you can find good inline skates with removable frames in the $170-$200+ price range - just not rec skates). also, to get a bit technical, quads have great lateral stability, so that’s a big reason bladers and people who are new to skating may feel quads are “more stable,” but quads also have less longitudinal stability because the wheelbase is shorter from front to back (in traditional setups). this means it’s easier to slip backwards or forwards on quads than on inlines. also! looks like you have your toe caps installed incorrectly - you want the toe stop nut to be closer to the plate than the toe cap so that the toe cap won’t get caught in the toe stop housing and cause stripping (which could eventually make your toe stops fall out). so in other words the toe cap is sandwiched between the toe stop nut and the toe stop itself. you may have already learned these things since this video was posted but i hope this helps someone!
@AlexisThora4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that you took the time to write this out 😊 Great advice imo! Since posting this video I don’t skate with any toe stop because I’m really enjoying jam skating and if I become interested in park I will put them in. Hope you have a great day!! Happy skating ⚡️💕

This is really interesting, I want to learn and know nothing at this point ! I hope you don’t mind me asking if You have any recommendations for skates and if you think 3 wheel skates are good? :)
@pepperspikes18493 жыл бұрын
@@farcrazy99 i don’t mind at all! it really depends on what kind of skating you want to do, and whether you want to potentially expand into other types of skating. first of all i will address your question about 3 wheel skates, sometimes called tri skates: they are faster than inline skates with 4 wheels bc of less contact area with the ground (so less friction), but bc of the 3 large wheels replacing 4 smaller wheels, you have a taller but shorter wheelbase. this means you’re higher off the ground and also have less longitudinal stability, so you are at greater risk of falling forwards or backwards than with a 4-wheel setup. the taller wheels (or you could say greater diameter, same thing here) are also the reason they are faster than 4-wheel skates. because of the shorter wheelbase, greater wheel height/diameter, and greater maximum speed, tri skates are not recommended for beginners who have not already established basic balance on inline skates. technically it is doable for beginners, but the learning curve would just be steeper. there are different kinds of inline skates in general. inlinewarehouse.com (the sort of sibling company to derby warehouse) has a basic rundown of it here: www.inlinewarehouse.com/fitlc/skates/inline-skate-buying-guide.html but long story short, if you are sure you only want to do recreational skating, recreational skates with soft boots, similar to the ones shown in this video, are fine (e.g. brands like K2). on the other hand, if you’re pretty sure you want to eventually expand into maybe “aggressive inline” (aka park skating) and/or slalom and/or freestyle etc., then i would recommend a skate with a hard boot. usually “urban” skates are good for multiple styles, but inline warehouse’s categories of “slalom” or “freestyle” will also work. brands i’d suggest include flying eagle, FR/seba, powerslide, and micro. i just got the flying eagle f5s eclipse skates, my first pair of inline skates. i didn’t wanna spend too much, but i wanted a quality pair that i could eventually use for multiple purposes, and the f5s fit the bill perfectly for me. the frames are removable, and the front and back wheels have optional rockering, which means i can raise them a few mm in order to have more maneuverability (which also comes with a tradeoff of less stability, so i will wait to do that until i’ve mastered the traditional flat setup). there’s also a soul plate + frame kit that is compatible with these so that i could eventually turn them into “aggressive”/park skates. the frames are also laterally adjustable, meaning i can move them a few mm to the inside or outside edge of the boot to center them correctly for my feet (the inline warehouse youtube channel has a video on this in a bit more detail). these are not necessary features for beginners, but they are good to keep in mind if you do plan on doing more than recreational skating. another thing to keep in mind is that many urban/freestyle/slalom skates don’t tend to come with a heel brake, but usually you can get one to put on them. it will just not come automatically included, unlike with most recreational skates. i hope that helps you! if not, or if some bits i didn’t explain very clearly, then the subreddit r/rollerblading also has a lot of information, and also no one will judge you for asking “beginner” questions on there. other youtube channels about inline skating can help you out too! i hope you have fun doing any type of skating, whether quad, inline, ice, or otherwise; skating is the best!

I grew up mostly using rollerblades. I tried roller skates recently (for the first time in about 10 years) and really liked it! I've been working on both a lot recently, and I feel like the biggest difference is that on rollerblades, you're on the edge of you're wheels all the time, but on roller skates, you're never on the edge of the wheels (and if you are, that's bad). For me that's been the biggest adjustment between the two. That and the difference in how you balance on each one 😅😅😅

I found it quite difficult going from roller skates to roller blades because roller blades don't turn easily. In fact they feel more like ice skates which I also find difficult to control in turns. And Rollerblades are faster because of the wheel shape and diameter and configuration, not the bearings. Very many roller blades and roller skates use the exact same bearings or bearings of equivalent quality. Very nice and informative video.
@richardrhcp3 жыл бұрын
With inline, it's not just the bearings that help you develop the speed, but more the height of the wheel and surface contact of the wheel which reduces friction.
@SuperSayinSolidSnek2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I came to say this. Also, just because your bearings free spin doesn't mean they are good. Take a bearing and clean it out and watch how well it spins before it's greased. Skate wheels don't free spin in the wild, they turn with massive pressure on them. Sure, bearings that are oiled spin a little more freely than greased bearings, but you'll never notice, especially in a recreational setting.

Great question! In my experience with rollerblades I put a lot of push into my strides (barrelling forward) where as when switching to quads you want to think about being softer in the knees and try not to put too much weight into your toes because that will cause you to lean forward and trip on your toe stop. It’s kind of hard to explain it all in text lol. In my next video I will definitely discuss this 😊 Hope that helps

It depends on the brand. I’m in the process of buying new K2s and for that I can get the same size as my shoe. I wish sizes were universal across all brands it would make it a lot easier especially with shopping online.

For beginners which one would be easier to learn? I really like the Rollerblade but I started off with roller skate and started to at least balance.
@AlexisThora4 жыл бұрын
Personally I found roller skates easier to learn in. I have been on rollerblades/in-lines since I was about 10 and I could never really do more then skate forward and back. In the period of time that I’ve been on roller skates it has been easier to learn new skills and moves. Now a lot of people find rollerblades easy so, I would say try it 😊 you will only be a beginner temporarily.

Hey I did both and you can totally go fast on roller skates. The trucks work a little like a skateboard which makes it pretty easy to steer your movement by leaning your weight to a side. I feel like that makes it less restrictive in how you can make rotations and such. Where the long line of the inline skates makes it go more straight unless you only use the front wheels. Cruising in the streets where you should be able to move quickly and be agile is great on roller skates where the inline skates are better for long distance skating in my eyes. Both are used in skateparks and are really fun to use so you cant go wrong either way.
@AlexisThora4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you 😊 You can definitely go fast on both. This was based on a standard skate right out of the box without any adjustments made to the bearings or wheels I find that right out of the box I go faster on blades. Thanks for sharing!

This video is very informative. I haven't roller blades since we'll the 90s I had the Wayne Gretzky edition that they would sell at target back in the day, I had bought some roller skates a couple of years ago and I have fallen down a lot and I mean ALOT lol but that was on me ,I didn't do my research and got be some roller derby type roller skates with the thick wheels like they have for long boards and some pretty expensive and very awesome bearings that made the wheels spin for almost forever, so with that said I can go NYOOM on my roller skates and was not expecting that, they are flat with no raised heel, but I can easily go from cement to skating on the road, but definitely I feel like more maintenance is involved with roller skates than roller blades. But in the end it was still fun and now after seeing this video I will check out some of those roller blades you were talking about

@@sjor3569 thank you for the response. I’m just wondering isn’t it more difficult to learn inlines comparing to quads? I have issues keeping my balance and that’s why I never learned skating or even riding a bicycle
@AlexisThora3 жыл бұрын
@ForoughOM because both are new to you, they will both test your balance in different ways. Roller skates need more front-to-back stability and in-lines needs more lateral (side-to-side) and some front-to-back. Safety is always the most important to me and it’s hard to make an assessment just based on a comment. I don’t want your fear of falling to stop you from even starting. Dirty School of Skates has a video taking more about being overweight and skating. Check it out she is great. In the mean time start by practicing standing on one leg to build up your strength, stability, balance and confidence.

I know what you mean because I felt similar when I made the switch. What worked for me was loosening the trucks a little bit and also working on bubbles (rolling your skates out and rolling them back together creating a circle with your skates). There are a few tutorials on doing them. If you are already doing them keep it up, it will just take a bit of muscle memory. Hope that helps!

I’m a roller skater and I started with skates because it looked “safer” skating was a little tough at first because of the mental block but after I trusted myself it was completely natural. Then my brother got some blades for Christmas and I tried them out. FAIL. My muscle memory kept kicking in and it was so difficult going forwards and turning! I really wanted speed as well but I can Never cruise on my skates without pushing forward every 2 seconds! Now I’m dedicated to skates and I’ve just given up on blades, I’m happy with what I’ve got rn and I’m pretty good at it!

In the span of nearly sixteen years, I've only ever skated four times in my entire life, three of which have occurred within the last two years. I've historically liked blades more from an aesthetic perspective, but I didn't have the chance to actually try it until I was 22. The most confusing part of it was that I remember being told to wear a size lower than my regular sneaker size. Additionally I've only ever skated indoors somehow.
@AlexisThora3 жыл бұрын
Hey Colin, thanks for checking out my video! Ya with sizing it really comes down to the skate manufacturer, I’ve seen ones where you have to size down (majority of skates), some will be your actual shoe size and a few size up. Best is to research/ read reviews of the skate before you purchase. Hope you can get a pair soon.
@colinroberts20603 жыл бұрын
@@AlexisThora Adding to that, I've somehow never owned skates-only borrowed/rented whenever I had done it. Based on photos of the site of the aforementioned encounter, it's difficult to tell what manufacturer myself and the others were using, because I don't think they were made "in-house- per say. On one of the photos, the camera seems to be zoomed out too far for the supposed logo to be legible. The size debate is something I've been trying to solve ever since that fated day 21 months and five days ago.
