Okay, bit late to the party here...LOL And saying sorry now...this is going to be long! Proud to say, I lost 61 pounds in around 8 months just skating! Nothing better to do during...THAT year...and my youngest and I both love skating. I'd always hit the rink with her, but when the rink closed, of course, we were itching to skate. Discovered our local park has a nice, (mostly) smooth, tennis court as well as a mile-long trail...plus a small hill. We had a BLAST! I think we probably skated outdoors at least 5 days a week, usually 7, as long as it didn't rain, of course...and when it did, we skated around the house - our own little "mini rink" - front hall, through the kitchen, into the dining room, through the living room, back into the hall - often calling up KZbin on the TV for our "playlist" as we went around and around. LOL Skating - when done properly - is actually a full body workout (as your arms move somewhat like a runner's do), so, even my arms got toned! Still a bit of work to do on the arms, but I couldn't believe the muscle I got just from that "arm pump" when skating. Now that the rinks are open again, we hit every possible public session...as well as still skate outdoors whenever it's not raining. We both have light-up wheels, so during the summer - and days she's not in school during fall and spring - we often do "midnight skates" (really more...just as the sun goes down until 11 PM or so, but we have been known to go out at 1 AM, too) around the neighborhood. I can't believe the number of people we've had stop us to ask questions...and - sadly - the number of people saying they were "too fat" to skate. 🤔😔 The only thing you can be "too" of to skate is too YOUNG! If a child can't walk yet, they're not ready for wheels. 😁 (Side note: My youngest has had wheels on her feet since she was 17 months old. I'm thrilled she loves it as much as I do. 18 and a senior now, I know I don't have much time left with her before she's off to do....whatever it she's going to do after high school. Which only makes me cherish our skate time even more right now.) Also, Queer Girl Straight Skates is a GREAT channel to watch too. Rebel does a lot of tutorials, skate reviews and comparisons, and SO much more related to skating. As for music, I'm a bit old school - Gap Band...Dazz Band...Earth, Wind, & Fire...Sugarhill Gang...Midnight Star...etc. - but honestly, I'll skate to just about anything, though I do prefer faster songs. Nothing gets the blood pumping quite like it does when you realize you have a fast song on and you're skating (pushing off) to the beat. Oh, and yes! If you're new...no matter where you are...don't be afraid to go up to others you see on wheels!!! Skaters are - generally speaking - the nicest bunch of people you'll ever meet. We want you to love the sport as much as we do! Talk to us, ask questions, just....come skate with us!!!! You'll soon have your own little "skate family", be it the people whose names you don't know but you see at the rink every Saturday, the man who lives down the street (or around the block) and skates at the park every Tuesday afternoon with his kids, or the stay-at-home mom who "just needs adult time" you see at the skate park every Friday night. Don't be shy, come say hi!!

@@madeniquevanwyk Thank you. :) All of my kids skate, but the older 4 are out of the house now so they don't get to quite as often anymore. 4th born also has a daughter (8 months, almost walking, she's going to be on wheels pretty soon, too! LOL), so...for now, it's *mostly* me and my youngest, but the others do join us whenever they can. Great exercise, great times, great family (related by blood or not)!

I love roller skating since i was a kid. I wanna be able to skate on the streets, but here in my country the streets are really rough and im always scared to fall. I wanna roll and feel the wind in my face. How can i stop being scared and get used to skating on non perfect sufaces?
@AlexisThora3 жыл бұрын
Hey Natasha, great question the best thing I did was practice in a “controlled” space. So if there is maybe a empty parking lot or flat surface (basketball/hand ball court) around you practice there before going on the streets. Then stick to the same streets for while, where you learn where the cracks are or bumps before exploring other areas. There are videos on here that teach you how to fall properly so you don’t get hurt check those out. Also, wear protective gear. As you get more confident in you skating you will feel better about street skating. Truthfully it’s something I’m still working on, I still fall, I practice jumping/stepping over cracks when I can. Hope that helps 😊

remember there are softer wheels for rougher surfaces too, that helps a lot. Buy the softest ones you can for cruising outside (72A, for instance).

Make sure you check out if there are rollerskating groups in your area! @AlexisThora3 жыл бұрын
Yup 😊 some things will burn more vs others for example if you were park skating; you’re going to be doing a lot of pumping up and down ramps which will recruit your leg and core (abs/back) muscles which will burn calories in the moment and during recovery. Also, things like speed can be a variable in the amount of cals. burned as it increases your heart rate but, even just a leisurely skate will burn calories.

did you notice any results specifically to your booty?? I had someone tell me it really helps and I noticed a lil difference once I got into it but i’d love to know if you saw any changes
@AlexisThora3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I noticed some changes to my booty but, I will say it’s important to stretch out your hip flexor (the front part of your hip) because it will get tight when skating and if it is really tight it could over compensate from your booty (glutes) so you might not get as much work from your butt. But, short answer yes it did help to strengthen my booty. I wouldn’t expect a lot of growth especially not in a short period of time. If you want more growth resistance training with weights is the best way to go imo. Hope that helps 😊

Inline skating is VERY close to ice skating. However, roller skating ("quads") are very different. Ice and inlines rely on the blade/row of wheels to maneuver. When roller skating, it's our ankles that make that maneuverability possible. I wouldn't really say one is necessarily harder than the other, though. It's all about balance. Generally speaking, good balance means you can use any of the three types of skates (and skateboards as well). Bad balance is going to make any of them a little trickier. I do all but inline, though it has been a while since I've been on ice. Oddly enough, I actually have better balance on a blade or wheels than I do walking down the street. LOL (Note: I've been roller skating since I was 2, ice skating since I was 4, but didn't pick up a skateboard until in my teens, but I don't do that often...maybe a ride down the street once every 2 or 3 years. So, I am more of a roller skater than anything. Mostly hitting skate parks.) Being an ice skater...I have to ask...have you ever watched "Crashed Ice"? (I think that's it...might be "Crushed Ice".) It's a pretty cool "racing" series where they have various obstacles in an...almost "skate park" setting - down hills, around turns, etc. Wish they could do something like that for roller skaters, though they probably could for inline skating as it would be easier.

I want to start skating, but there are so many differences I would not know where to start. I hoped that you could help me with that. What are the things I need to pay attention to and what would you advise a beginner? It would be useful if my support soles fit in it. I am also not very stable in my ankles and find brakes behind what I can remember from the past scary. (But am good in skiing) does someone have tips or an idea?
@MystiqueRisingSun2 жыл бұрын
High top boot (no "speed" or "derby" boots) if you're worried about your ankles. Usually that is a myth, though, unless you have a small handful of specific deformities or injuries to your ankle/foot. I suffer from CAI (chronic ankle instability - too many sprains, twists, and strains to my ankles during my gymnastic years), but I still do better on - and prefer - those speed/derby (low-cut) skate boots. Anyway, if your support soles fit in your shoes, they will fit in your skates. If worried about safety, get some good gear - elbow pads, knees pads, wrist guards, helmet, and Bumsavers (or something similar). Be sure the helmet is for roller skaters (bike helmets do NOT protect the part of the head skaters typically land on) or a multi-purpose/multi-sport style helmet. At the VERY least, invest in a good helmet (S-1 and Triple 8 are good brands) and wrist guards. Roller skates don't have back brakes, only toe stops, so no worries about that, either. That being said, look up ways to stop. Toe stops really should NOT be used when rolling forward. Check out tutorials/instructions for T-Stops, those are the most useful when rolling forward. When buying skates, be sure to take the brand and model into account. Find a few pairs you like in your price range and email or call the company for proper sizing information. Skates should fit like a sock. Your longest toe should *just* touch the inside of the toe box. That being said, sadly, many skates don't come in half sizes, so you may have to go up a size if you are in halves. Also note, most skates are in men's sizes, so women often have to go down (Men's 5 = Women's 6, Men's 10 = Women's 11), there are only a couple brands who size true to a women's shoe size. Model of skate in important as well - with the same brand, different sizes still fit differently in different models, and some are wider or narrower than others, too. I LOVE Sure-Grip brand skates. I have 3 different models. Normally I'm a size 6 women's tennis shoe. My GT (low-top, speed skate) is a size 5, my Prism (high top, basic/casual skate) is a 7, and my Rebel (low-top, derby skate) is a 6....but all 3 pair fit me perfectly...so definitely reach out to the company before purchasing, unless you have a rink close that sells skates so you can easily try on at least some of the models you like. Sorry that was long. Hope it helped, though you probably (hopefully?) already got a pair by now.
