When you ran out of rink I laughed . . . at myself! I was practicing backwards skating for the first time at a rink yesterday on their practice floor, and was unfamiliar with the area. I heard you saying to keep my head up and eyes forward (from you backwards basic video--I had not yet watched this one), and I skated smack into a wall, and landed on my tailbone. Let me tell you, when a 60-something grandmother lands on her butt the first 5 minutes in a rink, every skate guard comes to check on you! I brushed myself off, skated for another 2.5 hours (without falling, and cognizant of my surroundings). Lesson learned! Thank you for your great videos and for being human in them!

I'm a beginner roller skater at 46 & I think Deborah's tutorials are simply fantastic. What a great instructor! Also, the camera person is really incredible! Super smooth, they know just when to move and when to stop, and they keep everything in frame that needs to be in frame. Kudos!

Yay you're a year older than me. I feel like a beginner. Coming back to roller skating in over 30+ years. But, I have a huge background in ice skating. I've been off the ice now for about 5 or 10 years. I lost count. I'm just glad that I can roller skate outdoors, and it doesn't have to be in a rink. However, I do want to get back to a rink soon, cause I have some indoor and phenolic wheels I want to try.

All my friends are getting into skating with me, and we all love getting together and watching your videos to practice. What you’ve done with this channel has meant so much to me, especially during the pandemic as I learn how to skate for the first time in my life as a 27yo. Lol... definitely music, if not a friend helped me to get my grove back. I came in last night, after roller skating around the block to Mariah. I told my wife, "Stella here, just got his grove back." My wife cracked up, saying that's talking about something else, you know? I said, I know, but I was just happy to have my confidence and sure footing, while skating, that I haven't felt since leaving the ice rink. It's the piece I've been missing, as I'm not at any rink right now, where I can listen to music. You don't realize the power music has, when it comes to skating. If I don't have music to skate to, I'm almost more often than not, afraid to take a jump. However, when I have rythm... that's it, it gives me rythm. So when I hear/feel a piece of music... I feel more safe to make a jump or move that I wouldn't do otherwise. I do skate with my son, but it's definitely not like skating with a friend of the same level. Like if he were to dare me to do something. I think I'd just laugh. I don't feel pushed to prove myself. Where if it were a friend... then I'd feel pushed. Like Dirty says here, you would be able to do more if there was a friend. Kind of like having a personal coach. So, if ya don't have a person, then definitely start playing music... being a musician, I easily get lost in the music. I don't care what people think of me then. I can't hear what they're saying, so I don't lose my self confidence to their negativity.

THANK YOU!!! Before watching your video, all I could do was an awkward backwards bubble. The tip about how to come up from it really helps. The best part is the match and roll tips! I had not been shifting my weight, so when I tried to skate backward, I didn't go anywhere! That and the "efficient" tip about bending your knees made it work worlds better! I had pretty much given up on being able to skate backward, so it was so exciting when I was able to do it. You're awesome!

Dirty! Thank you for this. I never really learned to backwards skate as a kid - just made it up as I went along. And while it kinda worked (I'm going backwards, yay!) it relied a lot on just my right leg to do the work. This will help me even it all out. Thanks and Roll On!

Same here! I taught myself by watching others at the rink and that was circa 1972-73' and then I transferred the self-taught roller skating to the ice. It's so cool to learn the basic technique. I got back on wheels a month ago. Almost like starting from scratch.

To me skating backwards (just as swimming on my back) is one of my favorite exercises but I can never feel relaxed while going backwards because I can't really see well all those little pebbles, twigs and cracks which I can perfectly see while skating forwards 🤷♀️
@fizz89123 жыл бұрын
Before I skate, I like to scout my surroundings and clear what I can. Some basketball or tennis courts are good places to practice
@e_lena96563 жыл бұрын
@@fizz8912 well, right but in my hometown tennis courts are not free, so you can't rent them for anything but actual tennis. Also, I mostly skate in parks amongst cyclists, scooter riders (and even motorcycles), so they often bring some pebbles even if they were removed a few minutes prior 🤷♀️ plus you can't exclude kids tossing things on the ground whenever they want to The asphalt itself in parks is usually super smooth and fine but it's impossible to me to make it perfect The only thing about skating backwards that surprised me quite a lot was crossovers - it turned out that doing them backwards was easier to me than forwards. And maybe in ramp skating I better like the moment of going backwards 😄
@fizz89123 жыл бұрын
@@e_lena9656 ah damn, that sucks. It's good you find backwards skating easier tho; I'm still trying to get my head around it, myself😅😅😅

@@fizz8912 well...I don't care much about a bit rough terrain: it's great if it's smooth but if it's not - no big deal, just need to gain a bit more speed (especially with 65 78a wheels, I have two set ups for different purposes) I can't say that going bacwards is easier in general but crossovers definitely are! :) also love inline skating (it's easier in some ways and harder in the others), so i often learn some new things on inline skates first and then transfer them into quad skating
