I'm a little disappointed that you didn't see this project to the end. The deadline you've given yourself kinda makes this project useless. The part where you realized that you needed to add the effects when you see The Slender Man was a perfect opportunity for you to learn something in game design.

That Arcane Mirage is a genius idea. In a world of insatiably greedy mega-studio's, the humble browser game asks for nothing but for the player to have fun.

for static objects that will never have any physics, just use "use complex collision as simple collision" in the static mesh settings. that way it uses the mesh itself as a reference for the collision (for accurate collision)
@EthanFilmsАй бұрын
When you need collisions for large non moving/deforming objects, instead of generating colliders using the auto generate feature, just switch the collisions to use Complex as Simple, and you get 1:1 collisions with the mesh. You dont want to always use this though, can be hefty with super complex meshes

I felt you. I miss browser games. Its so nostalgic and was very convient. Sometimws you just wanted to quickly pick up a game and start playing. Thats why I played them so much.

For the bathrooms: It's possible you have flipped normals if you're getting shading issues. Just me throwing a suggestion out there, that's always the first thing I check.

you can uv unwrap and add simple bevel inside unreal, its in the editor you need to active it (modelling tools) it will be in the bar where you select landscape mode etc. also you can model simple forms there

Going into the materials I unlinked a lot of the nodes simulating wind, basically cut it back so it's just the albedo and roughness map. I also disabled nanite and generated LODs for them.

One year ago I switched to Unreal after 13 years of Unity. So far really liking it, but like you I am concerned about it not having a web export. So I have been learning Godot in parallel for web stuff, and I keep using Unreal for higher end stuff. How was your experience hosting the game on Arcane Mirage?
@NathanRohnerАй бұрын
It was pretty easy to upload and setup (after working out Unreal pixel streaming in the engine) but you can't update builds which is unfortunate and the latency is noticeable as other comments have mentioned. Definitely needs more work.
@DarkSoul-pb6dvАй бұрын
trying to play the game on the browser was terrible it's literally just streaming it and there is around a 3 second delay to move and the visual compression is un-playable

10:25 well your first mistake was using UE5 to begin with, pretty sure that in and of itself counts as a lack of optimization for a game like this lol. Using a smaller loghter engine like godot would have been a way better choice since you arent really using most of ue5s graphical features anyway so the game is already going to be way b8gger and resource intensive than it needs to be

Cool video, but honestly the original looks better. Not much current gen graphics utilized in this project.
@NathanRohnerАй бұрын
What would you have preferred me to add?
@TheMrLeoniastyАй бұрын
@@NathanRohner hmm I don't think its one specific thing. Mainly it's the visuals. In the original they are very consistent in their art direction. The lack of "realistic" lighting post processing etc isn't needed. Here when you add realistic ligthing/shaders and rendering effects you automatically the inconsistencies in the model density/foliage lighting quality pops out more. For instance the ground model/texture really sticks out, it's very basic and overall there is this feeling that the models in this map are not connected to the world they are in. For example the bathroom. It's just walls and a ground with a megascan shader. Since the shader is realistic you would expect some things like a baseboard or a some details on the ceiling like pipes or a lightbulb, maybe some cables. For now it feels like a well programmed game with some really nice assets, but none of that is really connected. Technically its all there but practically it lacks an overall art direction in my opinion.
@NathanRohnerАй бұрын
Yeah, if I wanted to work on the art direction that would have escalated things from 2 weeks to 2 years...
