Agreed, This is one of those classics for beginners or even more mid level players reel to practice all sorts of melodic variations. I find a nice move is actually to simplify sometimes where there are triplets or whatever....and just hold the base note for equal value! Esp cool if you can slide into that note etc. I think, but am not entirely sure, the old players sometimes called that trick the “ long note”...it’s lovely and dead simple and some how can give reel phrases and entirely diff feel...sort of breathing room mid tune perhaps. I love pairing this reel with “ The ships are sailing “ to follow...they just seem made for each other....and so nice on fiddle! Diff kind of lift entirely too....so a nice contrast. Wish I could explain it technically in muse theory but that’s beyond my ken. But they’re both sweet tunes. NIce variation ideas, thanks!

Good call on doing Rollin in the Ryegrass INTO Ships Are Sailing. That's D Major to E Minor; and the change from a Major key into a Minor key can have a great effect. Kind of a DROP or a darkening, which is dramatic and has its own energy.

Are there chords ideas in that book? 😺

I never HAVE offered chords, preferring for players to engage in the process of experimenting and finding their own progressions. But I'm starting to think a guide would be of great use. Whew... lots on the to do list!
