when i didnt know about cameras i didnt really notice these, and when i did notice i thought it was just the ball deformed due to hard hit. most people dont know of rolling shutter or care. especially when its on the ball. it would only be bad if its a golf stick. so this image is good no need to worry

That’s a perfect demonstration of the effect David. I’ve ceased to use the ES for football and I certainly didn’t use it for the hockey I shot last weekend. I might use it for rugby tomorrow since distortion on a rugby isn’t as noticeable and not likely to happen when they’re passing it hand to hand anyway. The R6 ii is still my go to for gymnastics. It just can’t be beaten and the ES at 20fps is sweet as… btw I gave up on sending the grip back and just dropped a tiny bit of oil to lubricate the af-on button movement and so far it seems to have worked 🤷

The agency I’m shooting for encouraged me to use the electronic shutter. In their opinion rolling shutter is not a big issue and „customers“ do not see it. So I use electronic shutter always and yes, there might be one or two extreme cases where the picture is unusable, but the next or the one after is then good enough. We look at faces and not at the ball.

Just invested in an R6 mk2 and used it at the weekend for a cricket match. Didn't notice any issues with the rolling shutter, either on the ball or the bat. But, as you say it does up your image count! Going for the classic wicket shot with the ball hitting the stumps and bales flying in the air, either takes luck or you have to shoot a lot of deliveries. Ended up with over 2000 images to go through! But love the R6 mk2.

The ball being kicked hard or stopped in its track by the other player will deform (it is not made of metal), so I am not sure this is the best example for rolling shutter. To me a fast-moving bat or racket would be more disturbing to the eye.

I agree, naturally the ball will deform. having the ball or anything captured at that speed still would be an accurate photograph

Hi David, I agree with @Twobarpsi, it's a great photo and you're being too hard on yourself. It's such a sharp image the slight distortion is a minor factor. Thanks for the great videos 🙂

Im in boxing photography and have the canon r6 and thinking about upgrading to r6 mkii with 40 frames a second.. that sounds great but.. do you think I will have the same problem with the rolling shutter for boxing images?

Not really, buy an R3 is basically the fix at this point.

Does he realize that the ball also compresses after he hits it? There’s both rolling shutter and physics contributing to both but the ball is expected to deform after the hit. Throwing it is where you’ll see only the rolling shutter effects because throwing the ball does not deform it as much as kicking it (if at all).
