Thank you for the review. I am a R5 owner and was curious about the R6II. But better was seeing all your images. This was the best batch of bird photography I've seen from you ( or anyone) in a long time! There's more to those photos than the awesome camera. You have a good sense of when to get the image and definitely know your subject. I hope your shoulder injury decides to recover quickly so you can keep taking photos.

I've said this many times that I downloaded raw files from the original R6 and R5 on one of James Reader's videos, all shot at the same spot with the same lenses (Canon's best). When I output the R6 files to 45 MP in Adobe Camera Raw then overlayed on the R5 files, most of the time I could not tell which was which (viewed at 100% on a 5K monitor). This included portraits, studio shots and landscape. If I used the Adobe Enhance feature on the R6 files and then output to 45 MP using Adobe Camera Raw, when viewed at 100% my graphic designer buddy unknowingly picked the R6 files as sharper and more detailed than the R5 files (view 100% on a 5K monitor). I did the same with R6 vs A7IV files output to 33 MP. When both used their respective 35mm 1.8 lenses, the Canon looked way sharper... because the the RF35 1.8 is sharper than the GMaster 35 1.8. Same with the 85 2.0 and 85 1.8. When they both used the best of the best primes and hit focus, they looked essentially identical (and again if I used Enhance on the R6 files they looked better both in 100% view and in print). So, my conclusion was that there was no case where the R5 files could be printed or cropped where the R6 files could not be. I've also had 8MP files from the 1DIIN printed on sides of city buses that looked AMAZING. MP is more marketing hype than anything at this point. It increases FOMO (fear of missing out) and makes people spend more money. I think that as long as the sensor stays the same size, it's pretty much limited now. If we look at phone cameras, many advertise 50MP but they look no better (sometimes worse) than iPhone 12MP images. So in the phone market, they are now trying to build larger sensors. This is why images from a medium format 50MP image will always look better than a 50MP "full frame 35mm" sensor . Once I learned all this, I decided to get the R6 instead of the R5 and put the extra $2000 I'd save in Canada toward a lens (70-200). The R6 II was announced so I got that instead and I'm so happy with it!

makes sense - I had the R5 for a year.... owned all of the previous EF 5d series.... ended up dumping the R5 and settled on a cheap "R" for only $1400 new... it's been great and seems to work better with Adobe products in terms of noise reduction. I don't see some "monumental" difference between the two for landscape duty. I think I'll go for the R6 II for cleaner images, and of course - the speed and agility the R lacks... Really what I'm after: The cleanest images for night/astro duty - with the ability to do birds if i end up living somewhere that has birds 🤣

Brent, take care of that shoulder! I must say your review of the R6II was excellent, as are your photos excellent. But I was really impressed with your thoughts in comparing that body with the R5 and your discussions of needs and wants. No one has done this nearly as well as you have. I am still using a Canon 6D, old 20mp body. But I am still blown away at just how sharp the images are using good technique and good lenses. I don’t print often, and no bigger than 16x20. Viewing a foot away ( yea, I know they say don’t do that), they are amazingly sharp. I am retired, on a fixed income, so an all new mirrorless system is just not affordable. I may WANT a new mirrorless setup, but I don’t NEED it. My 6D is no bird camera, yet there are times I took photos of a rare bird, too far away with the 6D and ancient 300 f4 IS lens and yet the eye of the bird is in excellent focus after severe cropping, yet others with their crop DSLR and 70-300 zoom cannot get that sharp eye focus. But, I would not hesitate buying a 6D II as old 6D body may expire before I do. Anyway, wishing you shoulder to heal quickly, and look forward to seeing more of your videos from beautiful New Mexico.

I agree completely. I have an R5, an R6 MK ii, the 100 to 500 and the 800 F11. The focusing on the R6 is amazing. I can't wait for the R5 ii. I love the R6 and have been using it a lot with the 800 in a cotton carrier and my R5 and 100 to 500 on a strap.. it's a nice combo and easy enough to truck around.

Great to hear that my issues with the R5 keeping focus is not just me. I didn't go for the R6 because I wanted more than 20MP, but they MkII might have been a bit more tempting had it been available. I think a better sweet spot might be around 30MP, but I'll just continue to suffer with 45.

Excellent review. Granted you concentrated upon big birds with slow wingbeats. Until! Until the kingfisher. Thanks for the BEKI Brent. I needed to see that as a real test of the bird-eye auto-focus we hear so much about. I'm still using my two 7D Mk 2's but I can see the shutter activation apocalypse looming on the horizon. Plus I slipped yesterday on some slick seaweed on rocks, fell hard, and knocked the dial off my camera. It could have been worse. I can still figure out where I am using my "Q" screen. Still just another warning shot across the bows which is telling me to really bear down on my research, and to that end I've narrower my attention to the R6 Mk II. I was frankly surprised that you had better performance than with your R5! Wow! That would save me a lot of money. The R5 lost the birds sometimes with a busy background, and the R6 Mk 2 didn't? Be still my beating heart! I've got three lenses I use on my Canons: the Canon 100-400 mk II gem; my little old 24-105 on my 60D, and the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary with Canon mount, so I can still use all my lenses. For a time I was considering Sony but that didn't really make any sense lens-wise. But I am rambling. Were you using APS-C mode or full frame? And were you using mechanical shutter or electronic. I don't recall you stating those.

The idea that 24MP isn't enough, or even that 20MP isn't enough, is insane. I think the fact that higher resolution sensors exist make people feel like they NEED more, but they don't. I can't recall anyone saying that the Canon 1Dx iii or Nikon D5 didn't have enough resolution for wildlife, sports, etc. They were(and, for many, still are) professional workhorses.

@@lewcehjitl3282 I have, and it's great. Clearly, you can crop a lot more and still have solid detail. My point wasn't that there's no reason to have more mega pixels, but that people claiming 20mp isn't enough strikes me as odd, given the massive body or professional work done with 20mp(or less).

I agree but there are some factors to consider here , back in the day the photos were compared to comparative work , everyone was working with less mega pixels and I would also say the photos were viewed differently. An award winning photo was viewed in a magazine and to zoom in you moved the magazine closer to your eye. Photos today in wildlife seem to be judged differently and by judged I mean in general , it's all tack sharp Eagles Sat on posts filling the frame , unless you have some insane lens then it's crop city and MP's count I guess.

I think the average person is still looking at pictures without zooming in and analyzing them. But, yeah, pics of eagles still get the clicks :)

Focus problems occur mainly when your settings aren't set up for the situation you're photographing. Number one problem with any type of photography is understanding your gear and settings necessary for your equipment to work properly. Canon Cameras are the best ergonomically camera in the world and their focus system is top of the line. But first you must realize your faults and correct them. Also realize that not every image will be absolute perfect after all nothing in this world is perfect. As we all make mistakes but by understanding our gear we can eliminate many problems.

Really enjoyable content as always! Sorry to hear about your shoulder. I don´t have any military injuries but for several years I had trouble with Lateral Epicondylitis. Couldn´t grip or lift a camera. Took a few years of trying everything from acupuncture to physiotherapy but I finally got rid of it after getting treatment with Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy. Hurt like hell but if worked!

I've been working on a front yard shoot with a roadrunner that really likes my place. He seems to love busy backgrounds -- the darn bird! -- and there's nothing I can do about it except open up to f/5.6 or f/4. Not my preferred apertures, but that's how Roadie rolls.

Thanks for the review! I think 2048 pixels on the long side is what Facebook compresses to or at least that's what I've heard. With the R7 I can crop as much as I need to and I almost always have more than 3840 pixels left on the long side which is 4k. I really like that crop ability.

Sorry to hear about your medical situation. If it's an old service injury, I hope the VA does you right. Vets I've known in the past give very mixed reviews. I expect nothing less than great results from the R6 Mark II, as I write this at the beginning of the video play. Merry Christmas and feel better soon. If the R6 II nailed AF on that kingfisher, I'm very impressed. Yesterday I shot a Great Horned Owl that was partially obscured by vines covering the tree. My R5 and 100-500 struggled to find and keep focus. I had to switch to manual for acceptable images. Since the trees affected by rolling shutter on the night heron shots were completely above the bird, you could have corrected then via a warp adjustment without affecting the heron at all. Other than for demonstrating how minimal the distortion is, did you consider such an edit?

If I know I'm going to need a heavy crop, then I'll definitely go ahead and put it in crop mode, especially with the R5 being 45mp.

So, I was on on of those "Big New York online stores" about to add the R6 II with lens to the cart, when something told me to take a look at the R5 one more time. It was then that I noticed they had apparently just added one used R5 with a 24-105 L RF lens to their stock and it was just a little over $400 more than what I would have paid for the R6 II/w Lens. Oh my, now what!? This camera is rated to be 9-9+ condition with moderately low shutter count (under 25k) - and I just needed to pop for a bit over $400 over the price of the R6 Mark II. I figured that with the number of people all over the world looking at that web site at any given minute, this deal wasn't going to last long, so if I was going to make that leap, I'd better do it now. I did. I'm be heading to Bosque Del Apache first chance I get to try it out with my Sigma 160-600. PS: Hope your shoulder heals soon. I' know how that is - I had a bum shoulder for a while and it wasn't fun.

if you can get close to the animal and it's larger, then 24 mp is fine. If not, it is not enough, especially for smaller songbirds and kingfisher species. Also, when printing, A3 is really the limit for a 24mp camera, unless you either print at lower DPI or upsize using software such as gigapixel. PS I own a 24mp camera and mostly shoot birds.

If you’re starting with a good file using AI up scaling software works really well. I’ve taken files from my R6 ii and upscaled them to 45mp and they look superb. Obviously if you’re doing this with a file that’s not critically sharp or is very noisy then all you’re doing is the proverbial “lipstick on a pi g”. I’ve done a lot of testing with this and the result is I’d rather have the R 6 ii and its features, and be able to upscale files as needed or when appropriate. You could crop and then scale the file back to around 24mp… again only if it doesn’t compromise the file to the eye.

Hi Brett, at around the 10.20 mark, referring to the square crop, you say that the image has 2600 megapixels. This isn’t correct, it has around 2600 pixels, not megapixels. A 2627 x 2627 px image has around 6.89MP. At 300ppi this gives you an image of around 22cm square. So to print this out at a couple of feet would mean increasing the image size almost threefold. Whilst the resulting print might be acceptable, it’ll be a lot softer than if the original image were shot at a much higher resolution.

Just one thing what would your setting be for Autofocus (case 1-4) to make focus sticky especially for inflight shots and where the bird is within bush with un-wanted distraction all around (like twigs and leaves) Second any experiment using R6M2 with 100-500 + 1.4 tele convertor ? if so what has been your experience on auto focus + bokeh effect now that Fstop is high

So Brent, you've accumulated some great work. I have a similar issue with my radial tendon after just getting the Z9. I did it with the D850 and 200-500 lens while rotating, ugly! We're in ski season so I can't see an orthopod until March, ugh. Left arm all the way...best of luck but you're younger.

Hey thanks Dave! Sorry to hear about your shoulder problems too. Unfortunately for me, that's just the tip of the broken-bodied iceberg. 2 destroyed shoulders, both with degenerative disk disease, fractured back that never healed right, destroyed left knee, and a left arm that was snapped in half and barley works. Sometimes I just have to it easy for a bit, when things start acting up real bad lol.

Thanks Brent. This video is what I needed. Moving from Fuji to Canon for BIF as the autofocus isn't reliable in my experience. I'm looking at the R6 mkll tomorrow and the Tamron 150-600 G2. Hey thanks Bruce, I appreciate it! I did used to like the Tamron G2 lenses a lot, but if you're getting a newer Canon mirrorless, I'd be a little cautious because the AF on the 3rd party lenses doesn't play so nice with the newer bodies and every time there's a newer firmware update it gets a bit worse. This is because Canon will not allow 3rd party companies to do AF lenses for the RF mount and the other companies can't reverse engineer the newer Canon AF. It's a bummer for sure, but maybe someday it'll change.

Hi Brent, nice video as always! I have two questions not covered in your videos yet. 1) In some specs I have seen that R6ii is 100g lighter than R6i. Could you please check and say if it is true? And if so, how do you find the balance of the lighter body with various lenses? 2) How do you find the buffer? Is it close to original R5/R6 or it has same poor buffer as R7 has? I have a friend who just bought the R6 Mk 2 and is still getting used to the camera. You mentioned a 500mm lens. Was it your 100-500mm or the 500mm f4 you were using for some of your videos? When I filmed this I only had the 100-500, so if I mentioned a 500mm then it was probably that. The VA mostly fixed my shoulder, now they're working on my knee 🙃

I’ve had Canon 1Ds, 5Ds, and shot film with Leica M bodies for thirty years before digital existed. The R6 mk II IS NOT a beginners camera. High megapixel cameras require a steady hand. The sensor is the same size but the light absorbing pixels are smaller. Thus camera movement is amplified and light spills over to nearby pixels. Stabilization helps,but in low light there will be some loss of sharpness unless you are very still.

People can obsess over pixel count, it isn't worth it. I have been a pro photographer all my life, notably motorsport, I recently used some images in competition taken on a 1D, 4mp, you look at them on screen and wonder why you ever upgraded. [I got two firsts incidentally.] Especially when the R5 will not play ball with my Sigma lenses, I still use them with the 5D4 though.

One thing I have noted (I have the R6 Mark II but noticed this on other mirrorless cams) is that the electronic shutter increases ISO noise by about 1-2 stops so I don't use it. It might be different with stacked sensors though. Btw, would love to see how you set up your AF (unless you've already done so).

I bought this camera for 2 months ago and I´am more than happy with it i combination with the RF 100-500. This means a lot of cropping after shooting birds which I think gives me good enough results. It is interesting to hear your thoughts about using CRaw in combination with cropping til 40-30 prosent?

As long as I have good lighting, close subject, no heat haze, and the AF was locked on, I haven't had any issues cropping in 30-40%

That's tough, and really depends on your budget. It's hard to give gear recommendations like that. The R6 II would be a great all-in-one body for both landscape and astro, though it's a little on the low mp side for landscape (personally I think it's fine).

Great advice. I think i'll opt for the R6 mark ii. For me (i have no camera!) it will be great for learning - macro, family, wildlife... But i'm remoted to get a second hand R7 as well, for bird photography. Will i need it? Thank you for your opiniins. J

Need is a relative term. No, you probably won't "need" it, but you might just really want it. The R6II is a perfectly capable wildlife camera, and better than the R7 in every way , except for that pesky effective reach, which most people fall prey.

I know you have a RF 800 mm F/11 lens. Did you try it on the R6 mkII? I understand the focus area is much larger in the frame. If so how did the camera’s focusing with that lens?

I like your KZbins. Canon specs states 600mm and 800mm focus area goes from 40/60% on mk i to 80/80% on mk ii which is why I'm going to upgrade. The 20 to 24 Mpx, etc. does not justify an upgrade. I do have the R7 which beat the rest when there a desent amount of light.

You may have mentioned it already, but can you tell me which focus area you use with the R6 Mark II to for birding? Do you have whole area tracking servo AF option enabled? Thanks

I think I have it enabled, but I'm also not really too sure how much that particular setting matters in real world performance. Then again, I don't really use R6II for anything other than filming my videos since I still mostly use my R5 for wildlife.

Personally, I really don't like the R7 that much. Mostly because I'm comparing it to my R5, R6, and R6II, but for me and my own photo/video needs, I'd take any of those three over the R7. I'm still working on a full long term review of the R7 and will talk about all that stuff in a lot more detail. But that's just my opinion based on my personal usage and needs.

@@maxidrivemaxidrive4330 I'm sure it is for a lot of people, just not for me personally. I really enjoy the extra reach, and I'm not saying the R7 is a horrible camera, in fact it is quite decent, especially if you're upgrading from something lower or older, but for me personally even though the reach is quite nice, I still prefer my R5 and R6 mk ii for their IQ, noise performance, ergonomics, button layouts, video features, better rolling shutter, higher buffer, etc.

Wow what beautiful photos I'm thinking about getting a Canon camera thinking about getting the EOS R6 Mark ll for vacation photos my wife and I enjoy wildlife and sunset and I also enjoy going to sporting events so I was wondering if that would be a good all around camera for those things would appreciate your opinion or if you recommend a different camera
