Here's a cover of Disconnect, the lead track and second single from 1994's Rollins Band album, Weight! Weight was a real breakout record when it came out propelled by the lead single, Liar. Those who made it past the novelty of the lead single (or were already fans particularly form the previous record The End of Silence) discovered Weight is a record loaded with angular lead guitar lines, groovey and dissonant yet aggressive bass lines, and some knockout tight drumming. Disconnect, the 2nd single (which I never heard on the radio!) is a great example of this with a fat blues bassline on the verses accompanying two octave drones on guitar, followed by a chorus with an atonal bassline accompanying a lead guitar that suggests harmonic minor, all glued together by heavy drum grooves and introspective vocals.
For tracking, the approach was to double track guitars for the verses, and then add a 2nd set of double tracked guitars for the choruses and bridges to better create sonic separation between the verses and everything else. Bass was tracked with a more aggressive grit than my usual bass tone, even adding a fuzz over the guitar leads. Speaking of which, the polyrhythmic guitar part at the end of each bridge, despite being clearly picked on the record, I had to tap because I couldn't get my left hand around playing it in one position at tempo. Quite the slippery guitar part!
This record is a long time favorite of mine, and it was a blast learning all the parts to this song, a very well constructed track!
