When you grow up with people, live in the same home with them, belong to the same Christian denomination and churches, you have more concrete evidence to back up your beliefs. I still contend that the young lady's behavior is atypical. We have consistently put certain people on notice about what we deem to be disrespectful mannerisms in addressing elders in our minority communities. For example, why should religious sisters in their 20s and community leaders with degrees feel privileged in insisting that the elders address them by their titles, but don't render the same respect to the elders? We do quite a bit of volunteer work with the elderly. It is they, in so many cases, who say they would rather not deal with these disrespectful people. Even when we render a service to the disadvantaged, the people want you to respect their cultural norms. I hope this gives you some insight into my comments. Respect should be mutual, not one-sided. He looks at her like my DH looked at me. He had a severe seizure disorder and passed 16 yrs ago due to an ER Drs. neglect......These two remind me so much of how my life used to be. When you love someone totally you don't even care about their medical issues at times. Sure, would I have liked to have had a DH without a seizure disorder that was hard to control...Sure, but I would have married him regardless of his medical issuess. Spinal cord injury happened at 16 so I'm sure that is what prompted him to study neuroscience. Hopefully he will get use of his hands and be able to continue school and even be a neurosurgeon if he wants.
