Quark's comment about babies putting things in their ears was a joke. See, it's common for human parents to say that kids keep putting things straight into their mouths. But they flip it to ears, because Ferengis have big ears. It was kind of a meta joke.

Yeah, he chose to only watch a handful of episodes of TNG, but do all of DS9. He said there is some secret reason he didn't want to watch more TNG, and said he will tell us why someday, when he feels it's right. IDK, maybe there's some personal trauma involving an episode.

I like Sisko's story in the episode, and I like that he directly goes to the Prophets with his problem; it develops their relationship further. Overall I think the show should've done more with what it means for him to be the Emissary early on...like, 2-3 episodes per season instead of 1-2 haha. Problem is...this episode is cartoonishly extreme on the Bajoran side. There's apparently no pushback whatsoever on the catastrophic social changes? And yet once it's back to normal all we hear about is how relieved everyone is...I know they're a "holy people" but damn, have a backbone. Also, was like, every Vedek just lucky their family was in the right caste 300 years ago? It's all handwaved aside. DS9 sometimes writes Bajoran issues well without reminding us too much how undefined the world really is, but this was not one of those times.

Re: Keiko and Worf, there's an episode called Disaster from (I think) season 5 TNG. Enterprise suffers damage and Worf and Keiko are trapped and she's in labour. If you youtube "Worf Keiko Birth" you'll see the scene - it's quite comic. "You have dilated to 20cm. You may now give birth." (Keiko yells at him). Or just watch Disaster, actually, it's a pretty cool episode. O'Brien, Ro, Keiko and minor characters feature quite a bit.

It's weird, we got a Sisko episode with Kira and a Worf episode with Sisko but no Kira. We need more Dax! Where's my little slug? Oh man. You're doing To The Death AND The Quickening on the same day? Ollie... you'll need a sedative. Maybe drink some NyQuil before watching so you don't burst. If you haven't already seen the TNG episode Contagion, you should watch it before watching To The Death. 34:30 - "Do you open fire?" - There's two answers to this. There's the real world answer - yes. This is combat - of course you do. In Starfleet however - they do have a rule - it's mentioned in Voyager and TNG I think - Starfleet do NOT under ANY circumstances, start a fight. Ever. Down to niggly things like this - Worf did not in fact know that was a bird of prey. It likely was. But he was not sure. He did not know 100% that that was a target. And under Starfleet rules - which do extend to the point that a ship is better lost in combat, than starting a new war or something (Starfleet personnel are expected to lay down their lives for this) - Worf fired carelessly. Remember this is Starfleet. How many times in TNG has the Enterprise come under attack, they've refused hails, they keep firing, and after 30 seconds, Worf says "Captain I recommend we fire a torpedo!" and then Picard says "No! That could be seen as aggressive. But warn them we'll return fire if they continue!"... (only for Troi to pipe up with "Captain, I'm sensing hostility." I'm only half joking. In The Best of Both Worlds, it takes the Borg tractoring the enterprise and completely draining shields before Picard says to open fire. Luckily, in Rules of Engagement, it was all a scam and so no harm done. but that's the technicality they're trying to get him under. IRL of course you would open fire - and O'Brien is answering correctly - the question was not "would you open fire if you were in his position?" it was "Do you agree (yes/no) with his decision to open fire when he was not 100% sure what the target was". O'Brien cannot answer "yes" to that because that's against Starfleet rules. Lawyers, eh?

You cut the line here, but I loved that the poet very quickly realized Winn was afraid of The Sisko. And Kira saying they would do literally anything The Sisko asked was wild. It's a great line, and super sobering. The Sisko had no idea the power he wields. The script was careful to state that previously incomplete writings by the Poet were completed, showing he indeed went back. Because it easily could look like The Sisko just offed the guy.

I utterly love that this joke exists - that they got the opportunity to do it, and that they took full advantage of that opportunity. At the time they made "Disaster", they were building up O'Brien's character in preparation for DS9, and it was very likely that soon Worf and the O'Briens would never be on screen together again. The odds of Molly's birth and Worf's Godfatherhood ever being followed up on seemed non-existent. This gag should have been non-existent, but here we are, 4-5 years later, Worf is on DS9 and it has come full circle. Serendipity!

The whole context is very strange. IMO it doesn't stand up at _all_ to the other Star Trek "courtroom" episodes - not even the Cardassian courtroom haha. Like, these two factions have broken their treaty and are in a low key war with each other, why are they even entertaining an extradition request? I guess it's another "it's the Federation and they're just so pure they'll even listen to legal arguments from people shooting them" justification... hard to relate to. On the flip side..."isn't it possible?" is a _wildly_ tenuous legal argument to hang your climax on. Would've preferred the judge see the evidence that there were no victims and dismiss the case immediately than the silly nonsense showdown "on the stand."

Rules of Engagement: weird style, not my bag but at least they tried something different. The trial is so weird because it's obviously just a standard (dramatic tv style) American trial with alien faces glued onto the actors. It really didn't click to me that the Klingon prosecutor acted basically like an American prosecutor. Mostly I just found it boring though. If you hadn't seen all the TNG it could be fresher. But I saw this first run and eventually despised Worf in DS9 and wished he hasn't been added. That humorous moment in Ascension? Embrace it, because that's one of the few TNG Worf moments you'll get. Worf in DS9 is almost all wangst and whinge almost all the time. I literally decided DS9 Worf is a different character than TNG Worf, despite being the same actor and having the same history.
