Seems the winners of Rome tended to have the best officers. Caesar wouldn't have succeeded in earlier campaigns without Titus Labienus. When the two split he said that it was the only time he fought a battle to survive. In other words, he was more confident winning his other tougher battles than he was facing him. Makes you wonder who we're the men who helped Pompey and Crassus in their military careers.
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 12 күн бұрын
@@vguyver2 Actually that’s what Caesar said when he had to fight AGAINST Labienus because the two were on opposite sides of the Roman Civil War; Labienus was a capable officer but Caesar could and often did get stuff done even without him.
@dylanmorgan2752
@dylanmorgan2752 7 күн бұрын
@@vguyver2Labienus was a very useful and capable commander for Caesar up until the civil war. But by all accounts most of the rest of his senior officers were neither use nor ornament and couldn’t be relied upon. This could be Caesar monopolizing glory in the commentaries but that wouldn’t explain him giving Labienus his flowers and is also likely to be true given the gang of ruffians and coat tail hangers that followed him to Gaul.

@@mr.l8527 I'm off to work so I don't have time to give you a proper response, but the short version is: words have meanings. The OP said light-years ahead of everyone else. That's not just a technological jump, but a jump in multiple areas all at once. Additionally, notice what I called Rome's true genius. It was taking great ideas from everyone else. The is only a handful of multi civilization empires. The number of empires that offered a path to citizenship to the conquered people is even smaller. The number of empires that did not confuse their military superiority with technical superiority is smaller still.

Imagine this as an ancient weapon. At ports you have massive metal spikes or boulders tied to themselves or each other to make a makeshift anchor. Then these anchors are launched with a catapult or trebuchet built directly into the port. So any attacking ships are INSTANTLY frozen in place within the port. And by the time they could even possibly cut the anchor loose, the other countermeasures are already on them. Ramps, fire, projectiles, etc. this would be especially useful in ports where there happens to be a dangerous section of the water. A whirlpool or some kind of anomaly, maybe even a waterfall.
