One of the most charming movies of all time. It was a massive hit in 84. Michael Douglas was white hot afterward. And Robert Zemeckis was able to make Back to the Future after due to its success. No chance Cassie doesn't adore it.

And yet I've seen several comments here calling it underrated. It was big hit, critics loved it, and it got a sequel. How could anyone think it was underrated. I'm beginning to think "underrated" has joined "literally" in the list of words people use without knowing their meaning.

One of the things I loved about this movie is in the end Joan beats the bad guy and saves herself. Very atypical for a 80s adventure comedy. I love it when Jack says “You’re going to be alright Joan Wilder. You always were.” As if to say she always had the strength of character to survive this ordeal.

Exactly... She started off scared and afraid of everything but by that point she was totally kick ass... She grew... not just another dumb blonde... and I loved that Jack fell for her... it was a great movie... Cute, funny, whimsical... an adventure, with a happy ending.

Story Time: Its sad some people thought this was a Raiders of the Lost Ark rip off, when it was written before that movie came out by an out of luck struggling actress then waitress. This movie was her big break as she made a lot of money when the script was bought. She was finally in demand. Unfortunately, in an ironic twist of fate, her new wealth got her killed as she was a passenger in her new Porsche Michael Douglas gifted her when her drunk boyfriend was driving it and crashed and she died, hence why the sequel, though still good is missing a lot of the magic from this movie which clearly had a woman's touch and Joan was an extension of the real life "Joan Wider" Diane Thomas.

Close. She was busy writing the screenplay for the Steven Spielberg movie Always (fantastic movie btw) and couldn't do Jewel of the Nile. She was also doing a "treatment" (outline basically) for the 3rd Indiana Jones movie, but it wasn't used. She did die in the car accident a few weeks before Jewel of the Nile premiered. Thanks for letting me know her name, because I love both movies she wrote the screenplays for, and I never would have known she did both without you.

R.I.P. Manuel Ojeda (Colonel Zolo) who passed away last year, 82 years old. One of Mexico's finest actors since the 1970s. A consummate professional with an unique look and voice, and great at playing both villains and heroes.

For the dance scene, they used some footage of Douglas and Turner when they hadn't realized they were rolling and were probably just practicing or simply relaxing, yielding the very genuine and spontaneous looks of delight on their faces.

I had a friend from high school that backpacked across Europe and made it to France before he went broke. Living on the streets earning money to continue, he came across a movie set and met Michael Douglas. He told him his story, Michael took him over to the food table for the movie employees and told him to eat as much as he wants. He also said that he did the same thing when he was his age.

So glad you enjoyed it--but I'm not surprised; this is a great rom-com! True story: Douglas met a waitress named Diane Thomas at a restaurant in Malibu. She'd written the script, and he read it, loved it, bought it and produced the movie, then the sequel, JEWEL OF THE NILE. Tragically, Diane Thomas died in a car accident after that, so she never had another movie made; that was her total Hollywood resume. But imagine being the waitress who talked Michael Douglas into reading her script! And btw, Douglas is the son of one of Hollywood's most legendary actors, Kirk Douglas. He resembles his father, and it took him years to climb out of his father's shadow, but being a producer as well, he ended up even more famous than his dad.

I was a high school movie usher at a one screen theater in Milwaukee when we ran "Romancing The Stone" We ran the film for two months because it was so popular and well-recieved. And even after seeing it hundreds of times, knowing all the dialogue and stunts, it still charms me. It's a fun romp and it's enjoyable everytime.

The actress playing the sister was Mary Ellen Trainor a familiar face in 80s movies including playing the mum in The Goonies, The police psychiatrists in the Lethal Weapon franchise and a newsreader in Die Hard and ricochet as well as appearing in Congo, Scrooged and Forrest Gump.

Michael Douglas and Danny Devito have been real-life friends for a long time. They appeared in several movies together. Michael is the son of Kirk Douglas, of Spartacus fame and many other great movies. Now deceased. RIP.

Very special film for me, literally the first movie my parents rented on VHS when Dad bought our first VCR. They rented some kids video for me, and Romancing the Stone for themselves after, but I wasn't tired, and they decided to let me stay up past bedtime and watch this with them. As a 5 year old, of course I loved the crocodile biting off the hand, favorite part easily, lol. But yes, appreciate its charm as an adult!

This movie is magic. I must've seen it a dozen times. Sequel is decent too. Kathleen Turner was huge in the 80s and early 90s but then developed rheumatoid arthritis, which drastically affected her career. She has made stuff since then, but it definitely impacted her career.

Unfortunately, she had a severe drinking problem for quite some time, and that, combined with the meds for her rheumatic arthritis, caused her to put on some weight. Hollywood, superficial Hollywood, wanted nothing to do with her after that.

Love Kathleen Turner - one of my all time favorite movies is "Peggy Sue Got Married," - (1986) directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and co-starring Nicholas Cage, with cast members Jim Carrey, Helen Hunt, and Barbara Harris, among others. The Douglas Preserve is in my city. Great huge area with trails, an ocean view from a cliff and it’s a refuge for birds and other wildlife. I worked at a celebrity birthday party years ago and Danny DeVito came into our tiny kitchen three separate times to thank us four women for our hard work. Class act all the way!!! I got his used cigar and at home my teenagers and I put it under a dome to make “the Shrine to Danny DeVito.” I heard it’s in Connecticut now with one of my kid’s friends. 🤣🤣🤣 I can’t say anything good about the female celebrity who came in demanding ketchup to splatter all over my chef friend’s wonderful food. Household name.

In the first scene, there is a tradition at celebrations of breaking the wine glass you took your first drink from. She didn't want to break the wine glass, so she broke the plate instead. Kind of sets the tone for the whole movie ;) And I think your dad put this movie on his list because he knew how much you would love it :)

I’m honestly very glad to see someone reacting to this movie, especially blind. It’s such a fun movie, and while not as quotable as something like The Princess Bride, there’s a lot of great lines and scenes. My personal favorite is Juan realizing who Joan is, and the fact that he reads her books to his crew/neighbors. Plus the truck chase/village tour minutes later. SO much fun! 3:08 Of course, that laundry list of Groven’s was pretty fun too, in a campy way.

Fun Fact: Joan's publicist Holland Taylor is Sarah Paulson's longtime partner. Also, I love this movie. A movie with a similar vibe is The Lost City with Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. It doesn't have the charm that this one does but it's a similar story and pretty funny.

Michael Douglas had been making serious message-type movies and decided to make something more mainstream and popular. This was the result. There is a sequel which is pretty good as well. Kathleen Turner did a movie called Body Heat with William Hurt. This movie got her career jump started, big time. It was written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan, his first big break as a director. It's a pretty steamy movie, but it's really excellent.

This is the movie that saved Robert Zemekis career. He had had a couple of flops in a row and this was his last chance. Based on the success of this he got "Back to the Future", then "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", the "Back to the Future" sequels. After that he could pretty much do whatever he wanted. He was up there with Steven Spielberg. Also, Kathleen Turner had fantastic chemistry with all her romantic leads, while still being funny. Besides the sequel, she and Michael Douglas also co-starred in "The War of the Roses".

I agree with Richard. Zemeckis earlier work were not bad movies. I want to hold your hand was a good movie and Used Cars is hilarious. Even if they weren't box office successes, Zemeckis talent was obvious to the studios. Romancing the Stone was a Box Office smash. And it was the movie that led to Back to the Future being greenlighted.

"The Ghost And The Darkness" (1996) is another Michael Douglas in the jungle movie, but this one is a true adventure drama from the 1890"s, starring Val Kilmer as a bridge builder and Douglas as a big name hunter confronted with some serious wildlife adversaries. Additionally, Douglas has a nice list of watchable movies behind him, including Douglas as the bad guy. For some amusement, try Douglas and Turner in the 1989 "War of the Roses".

I think that's one of the things I love about the 80s and 90s. There were so many romance movies that guys can enjoy and action movies that girls can enjoy. Also, I don't know what suddenly made me remember it but since you like romcoms, 80s movies and Harrison Ford I HIGHLY recommend you watch Working Girl. I don't know why nobody reacts to it. It has a stellar cast of main and supporting characters, great music, great romance... I really think you're gonna love it.

Many of my female friends love this movie. It was written by a lady named Diane Thomas who unfortunately died before the premiere. It significant because it’s an adventure movie and a romance. But the main character is Joan!

This movie was free on YT a month or 2 ago, & it hit me when I watched it (yet again) then that the scenes w/Joan, Jack, & Juan (the guy who gave a mini tour as they were escaping), all had names derived from/variants of the name John. Joan is the feminine version; Jack is/was a common nickname for John (think, JFK), & Juan is the Spanish version. How I never noticed that before is amazing. Even 40 yr old movies can surprise you. Also, note how her hairstyle reflects the changes in her, like gaining self-confidence. And for some reason, I always think of the Kai Cobra Sensei from Karate Kid when they're checking out that guy in the bar @ the beginning.

You should check out Kathleen Turner in Body Heat alongside William Hurt. It's the movie that opened the door for her to get the role in Romancing The Stone. It's a Film Noir directed and written by Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Also see Random Harvest with Carly.

Probably someone has mentioned this, but Kathleen Turner was in possibly the steamiest neo-noir thriller, "Body Heat", her first film. It was written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote, co-wrote or directed a load of movies, including many of the Star Wars films and others. Body Heat was his first directorial effort. It also starred William Hurt, in one of his (if not first) movie roles.

I was deep in my romance novel phase when this movie came out. I already had the book and got the movie poster. I liked it so much and the supporting cast is dynamite! Interesting about Michael Douglas. His work trends dramatic/suspense, but he’s a gifted comedic actor as well! Sidenote: he and Danny DeVito have been friends since college. Danny was in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a film produced by Michael Douglas. Michael is also worth checking out in China Syndrome, War of the Roses (black comedy), Wall Street, and many more.

It's a sequel to Romancing the Stone. Sure Cassie will watch that one too but it isn't as good as the first film. There is also The War of the Roses that has the same cast but isn't the same characters.

This was the first filmed we rented on VHS when we first move out from my parents house. It was a great ride from start to finish with some good action and great comedy with Danny DeVito stealing the show. Hard to believe it's almost 40 years old. Favourite moment is when Danny DeVito falls over the counter in the Pueblo Police Station trying to grab his picture off the wall.

Kathleen Turner is probably best known for her femme fatale role in the film Body Heat, which was written and directed by the screenwriter of Raiders of the Lost Ark. She's also in my favorite Steve Martin comedy The Man With Two Brains. She and Michael Douglas (and Danny Devito) made another movie called The War of the Roses. It's a comedy. But NOT a romantic one. It's kinda the anti-romantic comedy. She did an underrated movie with Dennis Quaid called Undercover Blues. I don't see it getting a lot of love. But I like it. Turner's distinctive voice lead to a lot of voice work. Most notable the voice of Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, in which she had the classic line "I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way". There's a sequel to Romancing the Stone called Jewel of the Nile. It's OK. But not as good as the first.

I was a kid when this came out and remember dragging *my* dad to take us to go see it, which he also ended up enjoying. This movie ended up being not just a surprise hit at the time, not just to the studios, who hadn't expected the idea of mixing an action movie with "Romancing" in the title to succeed, let alone a blend of 2 genres with distinctly separate target market segments (even in the public's mind), but 20th Century Fox's only major box office hit of that year. I think it was because it did ride the popular trend at the time of both action and romance genres, and was well-executed, such that it drew in both target demographics, along with kids like myself who liked a good adventure story. You should, of course now, check out the sequel. And absolutely Carly should watch both (and I'm a bit surprised you didn't have her watch this with you)!.
