Hoddle and Keegan's tactics and selections cost England... simple as that. Hoddle had his favourites and should have started Owen. Keegan absolutely blew that game vs Romania in 2000! He should have resigned after failing to even achieve a draw.

​@onlyweatherlol93 Hoddle wasn't against Owen he started to use him more than Sheringham who was rightly a starter going into this WorldCup given his experience but gave Owen his place on merit. Hoddle's tactics didn't look bad vs Argentina did they. 120mins England technically scored more goals than Argentina if you count harshly disallowed goal yet played 75mins with 10 men vs 12. Why do people wrongly accuse Hoddle of things? Like saying he was jealous of Beckham no that was that Kim Nielson guy if anyone. Hoddle was offered a 10 year contract after winning Tournoi de France and it's not hard to see why plus many ex players speak highly of him and say it was nothing to do with football why he was sacked said he would've been the manager for as long as he wanted if it wasn't for a controversial non-football related comment he was alleged to have made.

Scholes was in the golden generation he won under-18 Euro's 1993 and Tournoi de France 1997 for seniors and would've won senior major honours but referee's didn't like allowing SolCampbell winning goals in knockouts to stand i.e 98 & 04. They give loads of teams who've not won major trophies golden generation label, there was Portugal (who also failed to qualify for WC98 or make it out of the following world cup mediocre group stage) they even did it for Switzerland this year said it's probably the last tournament of their golden generation. I read something about the likes of Romania having a golden generation then in the 90's where they also didn't win anything.

And if England had drawn here they would've had to face the team who not only got further than Argentina but came 3rd, got a golden boot and were only elininated by the hosts/eventual winners who had a star studied team. England still ranked higher than Romania due to not losing vs Argentina in 120mins. Finished 9th, Romania finished 11th. I suppose it would've been a fairer game vs Croatia though, the winner would've probably deserved it. Where as Argentina had 12 men vs 10 because Beckham yellow card offence at worst was given as a red so played 75mins with a man less plus the ref on Argentina's side still England would've won but for a disallowed goal the ref gave Argentina 5 big decisions to England's 1, Argentina were rewarded for play acting like Portugal would be a bit later down the line but both only got through on pens.

@brettriverboat9920 This isn't WC2002 where Seaman was 38/39 (but still who would you have taken instead? He'd just won the double with Arsenal again like in 98 and that age isn't abnormal for a GK anyway) we didn't flop at WC2002 we played only very good teams and had a good record against them and narrowly lost ti the eventual winners Brazil and that team is deemed as 1of if not the best teams ever especially best WorldCup winning team and we didn't "flop" in WC98 finished in the highest place of all teams knocked out in R16 and were only cheated out of the tournament but showed we were better than Argentina because England played 75 mins with 10 vs their 12 and still they needed a shootout to go through. As GlennHoddle said, Argentina didn't win, we just didn't go through.
