Did Romanian stamps predict a revolution? For this episode I pull a Romanian stamp featuring a TV building which starts a conversation about Romania’s first stamps, Moldovia, the Aurochs, and a revolution in 1989.

Greetings from Romania! Another interesting fact - the most expensive newspaper in the world is The "Auroch and the Eagle" ("Zimbrulu and Vulturulu"), bought for 830 000 Euro at an auction. The newspaper was sent in November 1858 with destination Galati. Because the package was weighting very much, on the copy were applied 8 postal marks Aurochs'Head.

Really great & full of memory for me & my generation who grew up in the Cold War. Romania was little known & just one more dictatorship on our continent. The feeling was extraordinary & quite unexpected - suddenly, it was all over & a tremendous sense of hope swept in. Thirty years or more on, well you decide.

I wish others would copy you and motivate a younger generation of collector and bring the collecting community together. I'm impressed with your level of research and learn a lot from your talks. An idea for future videos would be the various UAE stamps (Manama, Ajman etc) from the 60's/70's which always looked amazing when I was a kid. Also the cultural revolution in China.

You Sir and your educating videos made me re- appreciate stamps and their historical value after some years caring for other stuff. It is fascinating - you only have to spend very little amounts of money and you get huge lots of stamps. Of course these stamps are not very precious but that is not the point. Take a look at one of these stamps and ask yourself: what does it tell me about the time and circumstances of beeing there during this time. So even a stamp somebody else would get rid of can tell a story to the one who wants to listen.
@ExploringStamps

A couple small comments for you. Near the end of the video you showed a series of stamps that had a denomination with two numbers separated by a "+" sign, for example there was a 3L + 1L. These stamps are called semi - postals where part of the money goes to a cause of some sort. Canada issued a set once to help pay for an Olympics. A show on semi - postals might be interesting. Another point is a discussion of fake stamps. I don't really collect Romanian stamps but they issued several with overprints. Quite often these overprints were faked for one reason or another. I have a copy of a Romanian postal tax stamp ( Scott # RA2 ) which has an inverted overprint which would be quite rare if it was for real! A show on reproductions or fakes might also be interesting. Thanks for a fun series!
@ExploringStamps

These are all great comments. It just shows that there is no end to learning in this hobby. As you learn something... 2 more things come up, its amazing! I will definitely consider and look into semi postals and fakes (which unfortunately I have acquired a few unintentionally) Thanks for sharing!!
@chriswhitehouse8982
@chriswhitehouse8982 4 жыл бұрын
@@ExploringStamps I agree. Are are some collectors who only collect semi-postals. I once considered doing this as well. There's a lot to learn because in addition to learning about the history and the country, you also learn about the event that the stamp is raising money for. Postal tax stamps are similar, but your are required to pay the extra money (hence "tax"), whereas with semi-postals, you volunteer to use the stamps or not.

Great episode - I learned a lot! In fact, in my opinion, this may be your best episode ever, Graham! I had seen images of those first Romanian stamps but had never realized that they were Aurochs (I thought that they were just bulls). Interestingly, the name Aurochs doesn't mean anything in English, but it comes from German and means: Ur Ochse, or "Original Ox" since it is believed to be the descendent of all modern European cattle breeds. I noticed that several of your Romanian stamps were CTOs (canceled to order) and thus never actually used for postage. Sadly, many Communist and West African countries produced many of these (I much prefer a stamp that actually was used to post a letter) - do you have a video about them?
@ExploringStamps
@ExploringStamps 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Barry, glad you enjoyed the video. I didn't know about the Aurochs meaning Original Ox... that makes total sense! Yes I have boat loads of CTOs and have used them in several of my videos, often times its the only stamps I can get to support a script, but you are right, I really should make a video about the concept of a CTO. Thanks for watching all the videos so far :)

They were Germans (Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen), that's why they fought together with Hitler, there is a set of stamps about the annexation of Odessa, there are stamps with King Mihai, Hitler, Mussolini. I'm not justifying Bolshevism, but it's worth remembering that Romanians also have black holes in history. By the way, in the Slavic culture, the animals that are depicted on the stamps are not extinct, they are called - zubr. Yes, they are quite rare, but there are nurseries, there is also a large population in Belarus, wild ones live in Siberia and 40 km from my house near St. Petersburg)

@@ExploringStampsThank you for your response. I enjoy your channel. My family name means aurochs in Lithuanian (Lithuanian has different words which retain separate meanings for aurochs and domesticated cattle, lost in modern languages) so the subject interests me. I'll share with you a Lithuanian story about the aurochs and relate it to philately. Two boys are born. One (Lizdeika) is given spiritual gifts and becomes a pagan priest. The other, Gediminas, is given temporal gifts and becomes a great warrior and leader of men. Gediminas is out hunting and at the promontory at the confluence of the Vilnia and Neris rivers comes upon an aurochs which he battles and defeats. That night he has a terrible dream. He is pursued by an Iron (armored) Wolf. He is caught and the Wolf howls the howl of a thousand wolves. Frightened by the dream he goes to Lizdeika to seek an interpretation. Lizdeika tells him that the wolf is angry because he has taken the last aurochs from the land but if he builds his castle on that hill, the wolf will protect and become the guardian of his city there. That is the story of the founding of Vilnius. There is a very good video ''Grand Duke Gediminas The Founding of Medieval Lithuania's Capital Vilnius'' on Baltic Folk's Channel which I highly recommend. Gediminas, Aurochs, the Iron Wolf and Gediminas' castle tower are on many Lithuanian stamps. The Gediminas Tower is the heart of the city (although the hill it's on seems to be collapsing). One of my most cherished stamps is a particular copy Russia Scott 3498 which shows the tower with the Soviet flag over it. This flag was taken down and replaced with Lithuania's national flag when independence was re-asserted. My copy was sent to me by a friend in Lithuania at that time. It's a corner copy and he had written in the selvage. ''This is no more''. It's the first stamp in my collection of modern Lithuania. I hope you enjoyed the story.

Yes, they are called Heck cattle (after the German Heck brothers who did the breeding experiments in the 1920s and 30s) and you can see them in the zoo at Munich and Oostvaardersplassen nature park in The Netherlands. There is still considerable discussion among zoologists about whether these or other European cattle breeds are closest to the extinct Aurochs. Perhaps we will have to wait for DNA analysis to settle this? If you are interested in so-called "back-breeding", you should also check out what they are doing with the Quagga (an extinct, partially striped zebra) in South Africa - fascinating. Dinosaurs anyone?
@barrydrees3617
@barrydrees3617 4 жыл бұрын
Update on back-breeding Aurochs: as I suspected, they are back-breeding current European cattle breeds and checking them against the DNA sequence from Aurochs (6,000 year old bone). So far the resulting animal is called a Tauros (since it will never be exactly like an Aurochs) and they look really cool. Why bother with the long and expensive process of back-breeding when they could just use the DNA sequence as in Jurassic Park? I don't know, but if they want to release them into Nature Parks some day (the stated goal), that might be difficult in the EU if the animals are from genetic engineering.

I was wondering about that too. He (Vlad III Dracula) is considered by many in Romania to have been a hero of resistance against the Turks. If you travel to Romania, you can buy practically anything with his likeness on it in the airport shops - fun souvenirs!

I got a lot of stamps from.Romania and Hungary during the communist era. Many were celebrating achievements in space exploration. They were cancelled to order and were the basis of a lot of stamp packets for young collectors together with stamps from the countries which now make up the United Arab Emirates.

I agree with one of the other posters that a show on fakes and forgeries would be quite interesting. I just got a forgery of a U.S. pre-posted envelope in a lot I just bought. Quite interesting.

Graham...watching your videos is not good for my wallet as, after each episode, I invariably end up searching eBay and HipStamp for various stamps featured in the video and purchasing them. With this one, it was the 1989 and 1990 revolution sets as well as a DVD copy of “Charade.” I had seen this movie about 20 years ago and it had totally slipped my mind. It’s kind of ironic that Audrey Hepburn starred in a movie about rare stamps as she would later become the subject of a modern day rarity. In 2001, Deutsche Post was planning on issuing a stamp featuring Hepburn, who was shown with a cigarette holder in her mouth. Her son objected to the depiction of his mother smoking and Deutsche Post scrapped the idea for the stamp and ordered all 14 million of them destroyed. Three sheets of 10 were, however, sent to the German Ministry of Finance and were used in the mail. Five used copies were later found in kiloware lots and the first one was auctioned in 2006 for €53,000. The second sold for €69,000 and the third for €135,000. Number four went for €75,000 and number five for €67,000, after taxes and fees. Hepburn’s son, Sean Ferrer, was in possession of a mint block of 10 that Deutsche Post had sent him for his approval and decided to auction them in 2010 with all proceeds going to UNICEF, Hepburn’s favorite charity. Against estimates of €500,000, it went for €430,000. You should try to work this stamp into one of your shows because its story is fascinating.

Oh I have exactly the same issue Adam... after researching a bit, I end up buying way more stamps than I need ... lol. But the Romanian Revolution stamps of '89 and '90 are awesome additions to my collection, great ones to get!! I do know of the Hepburn stamp, I covered it in my top 10 most interesting expensive stamp video, its so fascinating! check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJeuiJiInNqqh9k

ooo a good portion of time, several weeks go into researching a topic, I usually research a number of topics at the same time... I first start with some simple Google searches, then that leads me to articles, documentaries, books and more. I am surprised by how much I learn from researching a stamp EVERY time :)

The language of Romania has a Latin base. But the Romans conquered that region during the reign of Trajan and then when Trajan dies Hadrian becomes in charge they withdraw. So for such a short time, how do we get a Latinized base language there? Other countries nearby use an entirely different alphabet and are not Latin based. You can see the western alphabet used on the stamps. Which peeked my interest as a young man. Totally confusing.

@jamesdarnell8568
@jamesdarnell8568 5 жыл бұрын
There is an electric guitar standing in the corner. Since most other things on the shelves are from past episodes, I'm guessing that the intro chords / riff (calling it a song is a bit of a stretch) were played by Graham himself. That is certainly a way to obtain intro music without risking a copyright strike.
@ExploringStamps

Wow, you got that correct James :D... Yes! I strummed a few chords and came up with a quick tune to have something unique... that way it is 100% copyright free :)

Can you give me some advice on how to get such amazing 19th century stamps from any country at reasonable prices?
@ExploringStamps
@ExploringStamps 5 жыл бұрын
Always a tough question to answer. eBay is risky but you can find amazing deals or bid on items at pretty low prices, stamps.org has an online store where I get a number of my stamps, also look for other online platforms such as hipstamp.com, all of which you buy directly from dealers or individuals who are selling their collections. Shop around before committing to a purchase :)
